Shadows of Valentia Discussion Serie - Lukas: Sharp Soldier

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 05:11 PM PDT

    Today, we are discussing Lukas.

Lukas is a playable character in Shadows of Valentia.

A loyal member of the Deliverance, he was pressured into joining the army by his half-brother, who saw him as a rival. His skills were recognised and he was able to climb through the ranks at a fast pace. He came to Ram Village to recruit Mycen when Desaix took over Zofia castle. However, Mycen refused his request. Alm then decides to join in place of Mycen. For the majority of the game, he acts as an older brother figure and mentor to Alm.

After Clair is rescued, Fernand starts browbeating Lukas, who's obviously very uncomfortable while also trying to keep it together, as he is the oldest member of the group and feels the need to act accordingly. Alm cuts in and tells Fernand that he'll take any insults to himself, but he won't stand for any denigration of Lukas, to which he genuinely expresses his gratitude.

After the war, he joined the knighthood of the newly united Kingdom of Valentia and worked towards its restoration, and post-retirement became a public teacher.

    Lukas is supported by:

"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 8: This Time, It's Personal Skills

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 05:08 PM PDT

    Chapter 7

Welcome, Fire Emblem fans, young and old! Trainee and pre-promote, Growth unit and Base unit alike. I hope you're having a splendid week. Now that we've reached Wednesday, it's time to once again ask the question of "What if?". Let's explore some speculative gameplay possibilities, together:

Skills, also called abilities, have been a mainstay of the Fire Emblem series. Skills can affect a unit's combat performance, or their utility around the map in question. These can be particular to a certain unit (Fiery Blood on Rinkah), innate to a class (Pick on Rogues in Sacred Stones), or learnt through spending time in a class (Armsthrift on Mercenaries in Awakening). While some skills in older games can be considered "personal" - i.e. Luna on Chulainn in FE4, Gamble on Kieran in FE9/10), universal personal skills only began with Fates. These skills cannot be removed, and while most are positive, some (such as Misfortunate on Arthur) have at least a negative component to it. Other's (like Raphael's Goody Basket), while not harmful, are simply underwhelming. And yet, the unit in question is stuck with it.

But, what if that were not the case? A) What if it were possible to remove a unit's personal skill, and replace it with an equippable skill? This way, units with an underwhelming or harmful skill can drop it, to get a "bonus" skill slot. Who would take advantage of this opportunity? And today, I have a second question for our consideration: B) What if it were possible for a unit to equip another unit's personal skill, in a normal equippable slot, upon reaching A-support with that unit? This way, particularly strong skills could be "shared" with other units. Who would do this, if given the chance? In asking this question, I am largely thinking of Three Houses - but answers considering Fates are welcome, too.

Thanks for reading! I look forward to hearing any potential responses. And, feel free to post your own question, if it comes to mind. I'll be sharing my own answer below.
