Everyone Plays Fire Emblem - Week of October 20, 2019 Posted: 24 Oct 2019 09:34 AM PDT Pay no attention to the fact that this thread is almost four days late. Still working out the kinks in the new system. Welcome to EPFE! This thread is a casual space that can be used to discuss any Fire Emblem playthroughs you have going on. Unit screenshots, general impressions, frustrations... gameplay stuff that would otherwise be removed as a standalone post under Rule 8 is fair game here. It's the same idea as the Everybody Plays Three Houses posts we had a short while ago, but not just for Three Houses. While you're free to ask for advice here, specific questions might get better responses in our Three Houses Question Thread or General Question Thread for non-3H questions. And as always, remember to tag your spoilers! [link] [comments]

It's perfectly valid for Byleth to be your favorite character, and here's why Posted: 24 Oct 2019 12:55 PM PDT So the recent FE3H Famitsu character poll results came and went, and with it, sparked the usual discourse within the fandom; people getting upset over their favorite characters being underranked, the encroaching Dimitri fandom apocalypse that threatens to consume us all, and Dorothea being so, so underrated (seriously why do people lack taste). But I don't have a problem with any of that. What bugs me, however, is the continued insistence that "Byleth" isn't a character, and the posts that usually accompany said sentiment. The smarmy, condescending post wherein someone makes a joke about people "voting for themselves", making cracks about people just liking "tits" or being baffled that someone would vote for someone who "lacks" character over a character that does. It's something I've always emphatically disagreed with so I figured I would take the time to explain why. *Full disclaimer: Byleth is nowhere near my favorite character (in fact, I'm slightly disappointed with how they were executed overall), but let me make it absolutely clear that they do in fact, have "character" * What is "Character"? Well it's a broad concept, but I personally define "character" as a set of traits and aspects that inform a person's behavior and place in the world. So how does Byleth fit into that definition?
With the above in mind, it's clear that Byleth is a decently textured textured character (arguably moreso than some of the weaker lords). But these set of traits alone don't sufficiently make Byleth feel like a character. The Character Arc Yes, this game's silent protagonist has a character arc. Several, in fact. They start out as a clueless nobody who only understands combat and little else. But coming to the monastery and being put into the position of "teacher" forces Byleth to connect with people. Not only that, they end up being involved in the affairs of others. And while it's a consequence of the support system, it's also true that the Byleth from the very beginning of the game wouldn't react negatively to say, Lorenz pestering noblewoman in an attempt to court them. Alternatively:
Byleth (smiles): You might be right / It's thanks to the students. There's also how they react to Jeralt's death and specifically how they work through THEIR grief. I don't think the game fully stuck the landing here, but Byleth is undeniably extremely upset about their father's passing, and the game does a good job of conveying's Byleth's grief. To the point where Byleth weeping for their father's death is a full on cutscene and an important milestone in the game's overarching narrative. This scene wouldn't exist if Byleth didn't have a character. I want to talk about one more arc, specifically Byleth's role in the Blue lions route. Compared to the other routes, Byleth's "character" really comes to the forefront here. As Dimitri's closest confidant, Byleth constantly tries to reach out to him after he snaps. When Dimitri tortures Randolph and mocks him for his hypocrisy, Byleth gives him a mercy kill, without the player's input. When Dimitri is wracked with guilt, grief and indecision, Byleth makes the decision to reach their hand, again without the player's consent. It's a testament to their emotional growth that they're able to serve as an emotional pillar for Dimitri, just as their friends were able to do for them when Byleth was grieving. Really, Byleth is central to Dimitri's character's development in a way that most silent protagonists simply aren't, and even just the ending of the Blue Lion route (where Byleth prevents Dimitri from going back to Edelgard) is the perfect example of what I mean. Still, why Byleth? The same reason why anyone would like any character. I can guarantee it isn't solely because of their ability to talk. Their design, their abilities, their place in the setting, the way they influence others…Those are all valid reasons to enjoy a character as a favorite. Your emotional investment in a character shouldn't solely be predicated on their ability to talk. So the next time you see someone say Byleth is their favorite character, don't write them off for being a mindless self-insert fanboy. They ended up resonating with them in that probably warranted it. [link] [comments]
