Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the best-selling entry in the series at 2.58M units

    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 12:16 PM PST

According to Nintendo's latest earnings release, Three Houses has reached 2.58M units WW (~530K JP; ~2.04M overseas).

    • Awakening's last update (December 2018) had it at 2.28M.

    • Fates is a notable point of contention. Era's resident sales data thread is commonly cited as putting it at 2.94M as of December 2018 (see: above Awakening links); however, Nintendo's Financial Briefing in October 2019, a few months ago, demonstrated a very different official figure:

    Image Link

According to this graph, Fates' sell-through within JP/NA/EU regions was less than Awakening's—between 1.7M and 1.9M—and it had substantially worse legs. Awakening and Fates' numbers are both going to be slightly less than their totality here, because those three major regions do not comprise the whole world, but their proportions are going to be accurate.

This is consistent with another Briefing in 2017 following Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia's release, which similarly had Fates trailing Awakening's sell-through by three hundred thousand, well after its release:

    Image Link

The only explanation for Fates' commonly cited 2.94M figure, to my eyes, is that it was counting Fates' rather unique implementation of DLC versions. [To elaborate: Fates had two separate base games available, Conquest and Birthright, with a third route coming post-launch in Revelation. After purchasing their chosen base game, the player could then purchase the other two routes as DLC at $20 (50% off).] This is corroborated by the cited source listing the figure as combined totals for Birthright, Conquest, and Revelation (the latter of which, again, was only available as DLC or in the special edition).

    • We sadly lack Shadows of Valentia's sales figures, only knowing that it exceeded Nintendo's expectations, but didn't pass 1M units sold in time to be noted. There were many factors for its relatively modest success, not least which because it was a remake of an entry that was divisive in Japan, releasing after the Switch had already launched.

Here's to Fire Emblem's continued success! Three Houses should at least surpass 3M units sold by the end of its run. I feel expectations were set a little too high by Fates' misleading figure, but in reality Three Houses represents healthy growth for the series.
