Some pointless Three Houses name localization trivia

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:54 PM PST

I also posted this on my Twitter but figured I'd also post it here so more people would see it.

    • First, a fairly well-known difference: Byleth's name is actually pronounced closer to Beleth in Japanese; both share the same etymology though. The male variant is "Bereto" and the female "Beresu", but both directly romanize to Beleth. However, they're both still officially romanized as and pronounced "Byleth" in English even in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
    • Edelgard, Ferdinand and Ingrid's Japanese names are pronounced closer to "Edelgart", "Ferdinant" and "Ingrit", respectively. Apparently to reflect the original German pronunciation more? Still, it's such an odd choice that even a lot of Japanese fans get it wrong.
    • Also, if we're going along with this logic, then Dorothea's Japanese last name could either be Arnault or Arnold. Although I definitely prefer Arnault. Sounds much classier.
    • Hubert's last name Vestra is a valid, yet very uncommon surname in real life. But looking at the Japanese pronunciation, it was probably supposed to be romanized as "Bestla". It goes along with Edelgard's last name Hresvelg as they are both figures in Norse mythology.
    • Similarly, Bernadetta's last name Varley is a not-unheard-of surname in real life, but keeping with the pre-established Norse theme, the likely intent was "Váli". This is actually how it was rendered on an early version of the map before it was changed to match the localization.
    • Believe it or not, "Dodoo" is actually a semi-uncommon surname. It was changed in localization to the even more uncommon Dedue because... Come on. That's just begging to be mocked.
    • In the English version, Felix's middle name Hugo is pronounced "Hugh go", but in Japanese, the h is actually silent, so it's pronounced "you go".
    • I don't think it's actually said in-game, but Sylvain's middle name Jose is pronounced "Joe say" according to the Japanese katakana, not "ho say" like the more well-known Spanish variant.
    • Mercedes' last name Martritz apparently exists in real life, but is exceedingly rare. Maltritz is much more common, so probably another romanization quirk. I assume you've all heard of "Engrish"?
    • This is one of the most obvious differences, but Ashe's Japanese last name, pronounced "Duran" and probably taken from the French surname Durand, was changed entirely to Ubert. Maybe to avoid association with the well-known band Duran Duran?
    • Another minor aside: Hilda's middle name Valentine is pronounced like the Spanish and French "Valentin" according to the Japanese, not like how we usually say "Valentine's Day" in English.
    • Lorenz's middle name... Now don't get me wrong, "Hellman" is a very common surname and sounds extremely metal and all, but if the Japanese is any indication it could just as easily have been supposed to be "Herman" or "Hermann".
    • Lysithea's last name was slightly changed from Cordelia to Ordelia, almost certainly to avoid confusion with the Awakening character of the same name (said character is named Tiamo in Japanese).
    • I don't know how to explain it easily without just posting the katakana, but the way Catherine's name is written in Japanese clearly indicates it's meant to be pronounced the way it is in French rather than the more common English pronunciation. Also, her middle name Rubens is apparently not mentioned at all in the Japanese script.
    • Manuela's name is the same in both English and Japanese, but is changed in the Latin American Spanish version only to Miguela because "manuela" apparently doubles as slang in certain dialects for... pleasuring yourself.
    • Balthus' name in Japanese is closer to Balthazar. (Balthasar? Balthusar?) No idea why this one was changed, though it's not too far off as the former is apparently a common nickname for the latter.
    • Meanwhile, Yuri's name is closer to "Yuris" in Japanese. (Juris?) Both have the same Slavic/Latvian origin, but that s is definitely pronounced. Again, a weird change, since the word "yuri" is heavily associated with the Girls' Love genre in both Japanese and English.
    • Aelfric is "Alphard" in Japanese, easily the most drastically changed first name. I saw a lot of people pre-release joke about the name's similarity to the streamer Alpharad so that probably has something to do with why it was changed.
    • I've seen some sources romanize Constance's Japanese name as the German forms Constanze or Konstanze. I don't see the need for distinction though; they're effectively pronounced the same way in both Japanese and English. (Edit: Okay, so apparently the English Constance is usually written differently in Japanese from the German forms. Still not a big deal at all.)
    • Finally, I've seen some say Hapi's Japanese name was intended to be Javi. But I don't buy that; not only is Javi almost exclusively a male name but it would have been better rendered in Japanese as "Habi" if that were the case.
