Ashen Wolves, Crimson Flower Monastery Dialogue transltion+analysis

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 07:23 PM PDT

So, I've been someone whose been growing pretty extremely frustrated with the abysmal quality of the three houses localization overall; and so I've been channelling that spite into trying to share some of the information and characterization that's gotten muddled.
I hope to post more in the future, but this is something that's a confluence of a lot of my personal points of interest.

Here is a link to my full spreadsheet of the ashen wolves CF lines, including a full Japanese transcript, my own translation, and then what I could find of the official English dialogue. Unfortunately, the video I found doesn't show all the alternate dialogue but most of it is there.

My source for the original was a Japanese resource site called pegasus knight. If you can read Japanese, It is an invaluable resource, if only there was something as comprehensive in English.

A lot should be pretty self-explanatory from reading the full sheet, but I'll be answering specific questions about this as well as append a few things that stuck out to be. I won't be accepting translation requests unfortunately, I already have a hefty backlog and maybe something you're curious of mine will show up int he future.

I have become so frustrated with the English, that since the month before the DLC's release, I have begun playing the game with Japanese text and voices; and so, this is my first time actually seeing how the English version portrays the wolves.

The way the characters come off feels significantly different, and so I attempted to convey those character differences in my translation, while primarily focusing on providing as literal a translation as possible.

    Constanze--
In Japanese, indoor Constance speaks in a super heightened, hyper-formal speaking style. However, for some reaso in the English, they haven't chosen to make her sound "old fashioned" like they did with Ferdinand. For him, they expanded his contractions and make him sound all prim and proper, despite his speech pattern only being antiquated, and not formal.
In English, in general, they have made Indoor Constance to be far meaner, and they even twister her words and intentions, especially in the sections where she talks about the Alliance's political system.
    Hapi--
Hapi is a tricky one, because her character concept is essentially as a "gyaru" character archetype. If you are unfamiliar, Gyaru is a Japanese fashion subculture, somewhat comparable to the American "valley girl". They are typically considered brash and shallow, and even have their own distinct dialect known as "gyaru-go". Hapi skirts around these tropes, while still speaking in a way very evocative of a gyaru as a character gimmick. However, this disaffected nature is explained by her pretty horrific trauma.
In English, she appears far...softer? And gloomier, and she appears to have been made to dislike Edelgard and Hubert a bit more. There are some particularly egregious changes in her lines so I encourage you to check it out.
I am not exactly a fan of how Hapi has been changed, but it's a bit difficult to put my finger on since I would like her to appear more refined and elegant over the time skip, but that simply isn't how she is presented int he original Japanese.

    Juris--
You cannot make me use his localized name, you can't make me. It's honestly just a huge mistake to make him "Yuri" for so many reasons that I can't even get into right now. Juris is overall pretty well presented in English as far as his general temperament. It is just difficult to convey how aggressively masculine he is in Japanese. He is more masculine in his speech than even Balthazar and Felix!
There were some difficulties, like with Hapi, he is artificially made to seem more in contention with Hubert and Edelgard than he actually is.

    Balthazar--
Balthazar doesn't have any super glaring misinformation in his lines thankfully. However, I do feel like a bit of his gentleness, and the extent of his lack of self-regard he has is lost. He comes off more arrogant in English, when in Japanese it becomes pretty clear that this is an act. I honestly think he is a wonderful character, in that he refuses to allow his selfish actions negatively affect others, and so I hope that part of him comes through in his other appearances.

I will also note that Constance and Hapi are two of the characters that have the strongest reasons to side with Edelgard. And so I find it interesting that along with that, they find their dialogue full of the most holes and discrepancies. Juris and Balthazar also have their reasons, but they also have other strong loyalties while Constance and Hapi do not.

I hope that this is helpful and helps clear up some characterization issues that might have come about. Really, the Ashen Wolves, more than anyone has reason to want to join Edelgard and smash the system and so I hope it's clear that they all do support her for their own reasons.
