    My conflicting opinions on FE3H

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 08:18 AM PDT

Three houses is the one game in the series I'm most conflicted on, it does a lot of things really well but also a lot of things really not so well. This will be me trying to get all my thoughts on the game out there and express my overall opinions.

First, off the games best aspect to me was its cast, most of its characters are great and well written even ones I don't personally like I can see the strong writing for them and the game has even given me new all-time favourites with Seteth, Hilda and Yuri. The only particularly bad characters to me were Bernedetta, Byleth and TWSITD for reasons I'll go into later.

I also really enjoyed a lot of the gameplay systems they added or tweaked, gambits and combat arts worked really well and I like how skills were tied to classes and gives you reasons to stay in lower levelled classes.

The map design I found okay, for the most part, most of them felt pretty flat and uninteresting with the occasional map here and there which veered into the really bad or really good category.

The first half of the game's story I also really enjoyed, it sets up the characters really well and is a pretty good introduction at setting the stage for the events to come and showing off the lords hidden motives.

Lastly, for overall positives the sound design is great, the music is very well done as per series tradition and the voice acting in both languages (minus a few here and there) hits the nail on the head.

Onto more negatives the game graphically speaking looks very ugly, the whole game looks like an early PS3 game with muddy textures and low-quality models throughout and is a far cry from a game like Luigi's Mansion 3 which released on the same system just a couple of months later.

I may have praised the first half of the game earlier in how it sets the stage for the conflict but my god it having the same maps with basically no changes and a lot of the time no big story changes was aggravating and made replaying the game very hard to do.

But when the route split does happen most the routes are still really similar, verdant wind and silver snow are very nearly the same plot with a handful of differences and azure moon only takes a different direction after the battle of gronder field and even then you still have reused maps. Crimson flower is the only distinct one and that ends up being just 6 maps.

Story-wise the timeskip also suffers from all the routes feeling like they don't fully explore the ideas they have going for them with and them all feeling a bit half baked and is the big reason why I want route splits gone and for the next non-remake to just have 1 route. I did like all the stories well enough, some quite a dang bit even but they all felt like they needed more time to be fleshed out better.

I guess now I'll move onto those characters I don't like, with Bernadetta it feels like they treat her issues as a joke rather than the serious issues that they really are which is a very bad way to display issues like that, her JP voice is also really annoying. TWSITD just felt unnecessary, I felt like Edelgard could've carried most the conflict on her own. Byleth is the biggest problem, they feel like so little of an actual character not having any dialogue and them being the super special one who helps the 3 main lords overcome their inner termoils feels so forced and unnatural, they actively break my suspension of disbelief and ironically take me out of the narrative.

The biggest problem, however, is the damn monastery. First off it barely changes throughout the whole game and there are only a few things you can actually do in it. But the biggest problem is how many times you go back there and how not doing it makes you miss out on some really good benefits so it feels like you have to go through the tedious grind cooking the same meals and growing the same plants and it's just so boring. If more areas like this come back in later entries they need to be reworked because I actively hated how the monastery worked.

In conclusion, I still like 3H even if it's far from my favourite in the series, I'd give it like a 6.5 or 7 out of 10 I guess.

Can we talk about *THAT* Edelgard moment for a second?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 10:53 AM PDT

First, since I know it will come up, yes I know discussions on Edelgard as a character have been done to death... but there is one moment that I don't see brought up a lot that really rubs me the wrong way, and ruined so much of her character for me.

What the hell is up with her reaction to Byleth after Jeralt's death?!?

It's so incredibly rude. I remember when Leonie was the #1 on this sub's shitlist for her having a poorly timed B support because she was mean to Byleth, but Edelgard straight up telling Byleth to 'just get over it lmao' goes by almost completely ignored by people. And it didn't have to be this way. Edelgard has had so much death in her family, more than anyone else in this game (and with this game, thats saying a lot). Surely if anyone could empathize with Byleth losing a loved member of the family to the Slithers, it should be her right?

But no, she is just so rude to them afterwards, and I hate it. I hate that it ruins the rest of her otherwise good character for me, that it seems borderline out of character, and that no one ever seems to consider it a bad thing at all.

Anyways, rant over I guess. Like I said, I know 'Edelgard bad' is hardly a new topic for internet discussions on 3H, but I'm also not necessarily Edelgard as a whole is awful, just that this one moment was really, really bad.

EDIT: Thank you to all the (sadly surprising) polite discussions pointing why others feel different. While this moment still stands as my least favorite for Edelgard, I do see why it isnt completely as bad as I did when I wrote this
