Finally got around to playing Mystery of the Emblem. Here are my thoughts.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 05:24 PM PDT

After playing through most of a Shadow Dragon H5 warpless ironman, I came to Chapter 24 and decided that I needed a break. You know, step away and play a more relaxed game.
And what better way than play the watered down version? :P

It's something I wanted to do for awhile but kept putting off due to issues getting the translation patch to work. With a little experimenting I finally got it working, and the mass quarantine gave me plenty of time. I played through both books on and off over the last two weeks, clearing the final chapter of Book 2 last night. With that, here are my top ten thoughts about the game.

The mechanics made it feel distinct, and not just from the remakes. Obligate weight with a floor of 0 AS? Easy no doubling weapons, making javelins strong chip but that's it. What's this, you wanna bring your horse inside? Not in these castles. Grinding weapon ranks? Nope, better proc your Weapon Level growth! And don't worry about no Magic stat; Strength covers that, but you'll hardly level it... on your own at least.
Dismounting is by far the most profound for how indoor maps play. While the Get Out of Weaknesses Free card aspect wasn't huge, they do play a lot differently indoors. The movement deficit over promoted infantry made them slightly worse, but the Weapon Level stat kept them out of E-rank hell. Though I do wish they were a little smaller to accommodate the lower movement ceiling.

The cast is a lot more compact. There are 45 characters per Book, enough to fit on three deployment screens, and you're deploying 12-15 rather than 11-12. It feels a lot fuller than the remake's cast.

I learned to hate the UI quickly. Very quickly. Wait above Staff is one thing, so is trial-and-error deployment. But having to bring up a character's stat screen to see their HP? This caused me several resets in Book 1 and it makes the very next game's UI look pristine by comparison. Also, no moving past a unit's movement range while they're selected. Thanks, I didn't want to scroll the screen anyway, Baka!
So yeah, I think complaints about no prep screen statboosters are an even bigger joke now. On the bright side, it has Thracia iteming, so you can park Marth on a shop and empty your convoy in one turn if you see fit.

The lower stat scale was a breath of fresh air. Stats cap at 20 in this game, HP at 52 (don't ask why). Smaller scale means there's less focus on growth, less of a rush to keep up, and even weak enemies can do something. The lack of individual class caps also means the focus is on what classes do rather than what stats they can get. And if you like your shiny green numbers, there are plenty of ways to ensure you cap several stats. Speaking of which...

Growth balancing felt better than the remakes, in its own quirky way. It's another thing that makes the cast feel fuller, there's less of a rush to proc stats. This might sound odd given the gaps are probably wide, but there are two unique factors in play.
First, the game's more primitive level-up RNG. Tables talked about this recently,, and as a result 6-8 stat gains or blank levels generally don't happen unless you're Jagen...
Or, you have the Starsphere. You only get it for the last quarter of Book 1 (three chapters if you get Starlight), but it's still long enough to patch up anyone quick. Book 2 breaks it apart and gives it to you in pieces much earlier. Alone they're less potent, but several shards grant higher individual boosts and you can stack 3-4 of them at once! It's addictive to micromanage shards for targeted gains or crazy level-ups, I tell you. They make capping stats that aren't HP or Res a cinch.

Unfortunately, the game has pretty bad power progression. This game has an unhealthy phobia with deploying enemies above level 10, or even level 5. It isn't until very late in the game that they get noticeably stronger beyond weapons. The low power curve and promoted enemies being treated as 10/1 helps, but they still more or less rely on your carelessness to kill you.

Dragons are an entirely different beast though. Literally. These enemies never grow, but they don't need to. Their base stats are enough that even capped units will need Regalia (for Fire and Mage Dragons), their Def-piercing breath means you're never safe, and with 20 weight who cares about speed. Dragonstones aren't weapons, but items that turn you into a dragon for several turns. Tiki can even use multiple dragonstones! Unfortunately this mechanic goes to waste: non-Firestones cost a Warp use, Divinestone basically outclasses them and she joins late enough to never run out.

Holy shit magic is fucking busted. Always 1-2 range in a game that follows the 1-2 gold standard. Resistance is a rare privilege. The basic spells are even lighter than swords, with Thoron having Silver Sword weight. And of course Archanea staff range which puts Marth's grab range to shame. The nerf to mages also didn't touch the playable ones, although I suppose I'd rather not face 14 speed bishopsr. This is why mages tend to have low movement, and why Starsphere and Hammerne don't work on staffs.
Special shout-out goes to Nosferatu, which really should've had double the weight it does, and Anew for being a map dance that deserves its capped weapon level req.

The AI can be surprisingly clever. You'll be surprised at how good it is with kiting your range. Take for example the two mages at the bottom of Book 1's Ch10. I warped Hardin down there and they kept inching just outside of his range, where they could 2-range him next turn. They wouldn't come closer until I let one attack me first. This also happened with the Book 2 Ch2 thief constantly running through dracoknight range, and several healers (Ch5 bishop uuuuuuugh).

And finally, it made me appreciate New Mystery's positive changes. I may have heaps of praise for this game, but it's also clear where the remake did better. Several maps got welcome changes, particularly removing harsh choke points and the Pisces shard being a drop rather than a chest. Enemy layouts are also better; looking at you Ch4 and 19. The Wolfguard's full inclusion is a welcome story enhancement even with the roster bloat. I think it should've changed more for the extent of what it already changed, but it's made its mark.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would be glad to replay it again sometime! Probably at a faster pace, with less focus on seeing it all and Starsphere vanity projects. I recommend this game to anyone who wants to see the series' roots: it may be dated, but it's less blocky than NES saga and the turbo button speeds things up. Also check out Wars of Dragons if you need a guide, particularly for deployment positioning.

FE16~ Three Houses Tier List: Resub Round: OOH Annette, VW!Hilda, AM!Ingrid and Hanneman

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 02:55 PM PDT

Welcome to Resubs Round: OOH Annette, VW!Hilda, AM!Ingrid and Hanneman

This round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give Clear Explanations why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds, providing full analyses for Three Houses units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

    Preliminary Round

From the previous round it has been decided that we will be retiering OOH Annette, VW!Hilda, Hanneman and AM!Ingrid. Today we will be retiering them.

    The Inexhaustible

    Planned Tiers are as follows:

Note, units are not ordered within tiers.

    • Fantastic Performance: S Rank
Almost always very useful, with few to no flaws. They either provide a valuable niche or perform what they do the best. These units have exceptional qualities that can't be made up for by others.
      Ex: F!Byleth, M!Byleth, BE!Edelgard, Dimitri, Claude, Lysithea

    • Great Performance: A Rank
Useful most of the time, with minor detriments that keep them from pushing the limits. They either fill a good niche or perform what they do splendidly.
      Ex: Ferdinand, Sylvain, Leonie, AM!Annette, Linhardt, BE!Petra, OOH!Ingrid, AM!Felix, Seteh, AM/VW!Catherine, AM/VW!Cyril, Shamir, Jeritza

    • Good Performance: B Rank
Useful at times, with detriments that hold them back. While these units perform well, they fail to stand out from their peers, and are less centralizing than the units in S and A Rank.
      Ex: SS!Edelgard, CF!Hubert, Dedue, AM!Hilda, BE!Bernadetta, VW! Ignatz, VW!Marianne, OOH!Petra, OOH!Felix, Maneula, Alois

    • AOK Performance: C Rank
Can be put to good use, but definitely have detriments that will need to be addressed. These units can perform well for a while, but either fall off or need more attention than units in the higher tiers to continue performing, or lack worthwhile unique qualities.
      Ex: SS!Hubert, SS!Hilda, BE!Dorothea, OOH!Ignatz Mercedes, OOH!Marianne, VW!Lorenz, VW!Raphael, AM/VW/SS!Flayn, SS!Catherine, SS!Cyril, Gilbert

    • Iffy Performance: D Rank
Not useful to field, and have liabilities that other units in the higher tiers do not. These units may be useable short term, but have glaring weaknesses that require more resources/attention to fix in order for them to see long-term usability.
      Ex: OOH!Dorothea, OOH!Bernadetta, Ashe, VW!Raphael, OOH!Caspar

    • At this point, units are no longer recommended by the list, and are instead explicitly meant to be avoided.

    • Lame Performance: E Rank
Any usefulness these units may offer is outweighed by their problems. They do not offer anything in the short term, and cannot match the performance of other units without an inordinate amount of investment.
      Ex: OOH!Lorenz, BE!Caspar, CF!Flayn

    • Meme Performance: F Rank
*Hahahaha... man. These lads and lasses don't perform worth a damn. They offer nothing that others can't do better, and getting them to the point where they can start contributing requires a mountain of time, resources, and luck.
      Ex: N/A
