Correlation between Kronya's name, her relevance, and Byleth (spoilers imminent)

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:35 PM PDT

Kronya may have not the final boss, but she plays a bigger part in this story than most give her credit for imo. Yes, she's a filthy backstabber. But when I look back, her scene with Jeralt is the thing I remember best. The scene that makes me cry most, and the scene that made my jaw drop further than any other game I've played in recent memory.

I'm not sure why I didn't think about it more until now, but her name. It certainly tells a lot. The name Kronya sounds similar to "Chronos" (Khronos), the Greek/Latin word for time. Time is an obvious centerpiece of the story. We occasionally hear Rhea say things like, "Did the flow of time bring you here?" It is here where I present my argument. Kronya is Byleth's worst enemy. And Kronya's stabbing is the biggest catalyst to Byleth's awakening and ultimately bringing peace to Fodlan.

The game makes a big deal about Jeralt's death. There are several weeks/(months?) where sad music envelops every step through the monastery. Byleth cries for the first time. He begins to feel pain. He begins to understand what it means to lose. What it means to fight for something. Imagine never having cried or felt that emotion before, what purpose is there then? Why fight for anything or anyone?

It gets better. The name Kronya is almost identical to Kronia, an ancient festival celebrating the Greek Titan Cronus. Cronus wasn't the God of Time, but he was associated with good harvest and harvest cycles. And he wielded a Scythe. Cronus also had a wife/sister named Rhea. Hmm. All very intriguing. And get this. From the Wikipedia page, "The Kronia was a time for social restraints to be temporarily forgotten." Wow, stunning, I say. Kronya's name almost literally means exactly what drives Edelgard to go to war. In general, this idea to forget social restraints is the positive outcome that we strive to achieve at the end of each route. To break down the barriers and restraints that separate different peoples. Hmm.

It is only after Kronya's betrayal that Byleth truly finds themselves. Furthermore, Byleth truly felt helpless in this moment. He rewound time, and yet Jeralt was stabbed all the same. It was the one moment in this game where Byleth couldn't alter fate. Byleth's kryptonite. Interestingly, Byleth doesn't kill Kronya. Solon does. One can never truly beat their archnemesis right? In a way, Kronya also helped Byleth. And thus helped Fodlan as a whole. Without Kronya's sacrifice, Byleth wouldn't have been swallowed into the darkness by Solon. And wouldn't have reemerged as Enlightened Byleth. Without Kronya, perhaps all of Fodlan would have been consumed by the darkness.
