It's a shame how decentralized a lot of Three Houses info is

    Posted: 21 May 2020 01:15 PM PDT

With most of the older games, I can get a ton of info from Serenes Forest and WOD, and a google search often helps with the more obscure info. But for Three Houses, all the resources are incomplete. You need the wiki, SF, the other wiki, IGN, gamefaqs, and buried reddit posts from months ago. If you try to google it, you get flooded with terrible shallow articles from when the game came out. It's annoying.

Hot take: Characters having multiple romantic supports and endings is bad for writing

    Posted: 21 May 2020 11:42 AM PDT

Don't get me wrong. I'm fine with multiple romantic supports/endings in the games, and consider them to be a good point for the sake of choice and fun. And although I haven't played the older games, I think such elements existed in some of them, but just weren't as focused on.

However, I think shipping has become far too interlaced with the games. I'm certain shipping has always existed, and maybe I'm about to talk out of my ass, since I only have Echoes, Warriors, Heroes and memes to go on for knowledge of the stories and characters of the older games, but I think the difference is the way the games went about it.

I give Echoes a little bit of flack sometimes, but one thing I think it does the best out of the games I've played is its supports. The relationships are firmly established. Who likes who is firmly established. And they can be comfortably explored and built upon without the writers having to worry about keeping things open and vague until a surprise S support confession, for playing matchmaker. That's quality over quantity, in my opinion, anyway. I'm fairly sure Marth's games also had canonical relationships, but I haven't played them, so can't speak for them. Basically, choice is nice, for sure, but I think there's definite value in a writer having a single story to tell and telling it... (I may or may not also be hoping to go back to a single path story for the next game.)

None of my friends play these games so I just want to talk about it. It'll just be a flow of thoughts, who knows may even contradict myself once or twice.

It was pretty fun, was the last non NES in the series I had to play. Certainly a unique entry, for the good and bad. I missed a ton, but I think that's normal playing largely blind. Missed 4x and would have missed 24x, 24x is the one thing I looked up (What a dumb sequence with the door). Surprised I didn't miss more gaidens tbh. Missed Asvel, Shiva, Shanam, Conomore, Almada, Xavier, Misha, and Ced. Some of them I got close; I captured Misha but didn't talk with Karin, I knew what I needed to do for Xavier but gave up after the red and green units got stuck in a hallway.

The game had a lot of hit and miss mechanics to me. Not being able to change deployment spots makes sense when you're on the run, but then you have like ch24 where your party chooses to split up but you just have to deal with whoever is wherever. I liked forced dismounting for the most part, but it definitely sucked having 0 units capable of wielding lances for the last few chapters. I really like the idea of fatigue discouraging strong manning, but in practice it really only affected staff users. I had heard ch14 was a top defend chapter in the series, but I hit the unit limit really quickly which stopped reinforcements, and the single tile wide roads made it easy to just plop low strength high HP units to clog enemy progress.

Capturing was cool and I wish other games tried something like it. Staffs were hilariously OP and I love that the game leaned into it. The thief staff in particular led to some lol situations. I'll never forget berserking Reinhardt and watching him slaughter his own battalion. This is the only game besides maybe shadow dragon that ballista were an actual threat at any point, I'll remember chapter 10 forever. Really liked the high number of personal weapons, even the light brand felt cool in this game. The story / gameplay integration is probably the best in the series, countless examples of fantastic uses of it all over the game. Story itself was solid, but Veld was completely pointless sms a joke of a final boss, never even unequipped his siege tome.

People were not kidding about some of the nonsense. I don't really like the idea of maps that are designed to be warp skipped. Ch22 would be horrendous to play without warp. There is no counter play to ch12 sleep staff except warping on turn 1. Then you miss Ced because after training you to warp kill late game bosses, Ced only appears if you get near the boss without killing him. I had to replay all of ch 11 because Kempf can't die, but the game only tells you by his sprite changing, so my first attempt I lost two units trying to finish his remaining 10 HP wondering how I missed 8 brave hits in a row. 24x plays like a bad rom hack, and has a nonsense requirement. I got most of the gaidens, but I think way too many extremely good characters are locked into them. Imagine Lara being your only thief, and never promoting into dancer (speaking of nonsense requirement, I only knew the dancer event from a YouTube video a awhile ago). I missed 4x, meaning Olwen was my first mage almost halfway through the game.

I've gone on long enough. Even with all its flaws it's probably a top 5 FE for me. I like how unique it is, and I think it'd be a blast to replay now that I know what's coming in certain places. Certainly not newcomer friendly, but something I'd recommend for all series veterans.
