My thoughts on Fire Emblem: Vision Quest (FE8 hack *Spoiler-free)

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:13 PM PDT

Oh boy, don't you guys love the smell of good FE hacks? I do! In this case, Vision Quest blew mi mind, I cannot believe such a good hack was created. In truth, I've played at least 8 different hacks, but VQ beats them all by a long shot, and I'm going to tell you briefly why (proceeds to write a huge wall of text)

I'll talk about different topics, and these are: Gameplay, Difficulty, Characters, Story, Music/Graphics and a final veredict.

-Gameplay: Probably the best aspect of this hack is that it captures some of the best mechanics in the series, some of them not present in all games, as if FE10 and FE5 had a baby with GBA graphics. Starting off the bat, this game is divided in 4 parts consisting of at least 6 chapters gaidens included, and, the amount of chapters is ridiculous (but in the best way, really!) and I can promise you that you'll want to unlock every secret to have as many maps available as possible, some of them are hands-down much better than many of the ones found in official games. The maps can be completed and expose the initail goal as well as side-quests that once completed net you lots of goodies (and I like goodies), like extra items, characters, promotions, lore, you name it. There's also mechanics like Skills, Shove, and Warp-cheese! I didn't use my 15-use Warp Staff but I honestly can't believe how much a tiny staff like this can improve the experience, useful from start to finish. There are tons of units available, so an IronMan run is totally possible, give it a try! The only, tiny, petite minor complain I could have regarding the game is the enemy density, sometimes I felt like I was playing FE7, but I guess it's not as bad as that game so I'll let it pass.

-Difficulty: There are 3 modes: Easy, Hard and Maniac(or Lunatic?) and even though Hard was my preffered choice the difficulty either spikes or regresses from time to time, depending on which part of the game you're playing. Personally, many things can go wrong even when playing on Easy mode, so don't get cocky because even Ballistas can crit units with 15 Luck. My suggestion is this; play on Easy if you're really new OR want to try an Ironman run for the first time, Hard if you want to test the "just right" difficulty, and Maniac if you want to suffer a gruelsome challenge. Have fun!

-Characters: Won't talk much about it because spoilers, so I'll just say that it was pleasant to see multi-dimensional characters in a GBA hack like this. The main character Storch is very similar to Ike in terms of utility and development, and funnily enough the main cast is still present during the reminder of the story. There are many more, but I insist, play by yourself and give it a shot.

-Story: Kudos to the team that developed this amazing game, they really gave it a lot of thought to the story, and I'm glad that it paid off. Again, will not talk much about it, so I'll just recap this saying that the story present in the game totally exceeded my expectations, and, I'm pretty sure you'll be hanging at the edge of your seat, if you like political drama that is.

-Graphics/Music: Polished graphics from FE8 are always welcome, as well as improvements here and there. In truth, some of the portraits used are amazing and I love how every single unit in the game feels totally unique. Fantastic job. In terms of music I was happy to find some of my favorite videogame tracks present, such as some songs from DKC2, Chronno Trigger, and so on.

-Final Veredict: If you're up for a good challenge, an interesting story and a cast of lovely characters then Vision Quest is the game you want to start playing right now. Have fun this friday in the afternoon letting yourself get caught by the charm this unique hack offers, you won't regret it.

    Thanks for reading!

The Hidden Darkness of Emmeryn, Exalt of Ylisse: A Character Analysis.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:09 AM PDT

So, a while ago Emmeryn came to fire emblem heroes, and since then I've been thinking back on her, which eventually led me to write this post where I want to share my interpretation of her character and what she represents, full spoilers ahead.

I think what most people see when thinking about Emmeryn is that she's basically a saint, a martyr that so strongly believed in her ideals of love and understanding between people that she was willing to sacrifice her own life for them; however what I believe is that there's something deeper at play here, a dark shadow beneath the holy mask.

Emmeryn had a rough childhood, she had to grow up without a mother, while considering what's known of him her father was probably negletful at best, abusive at worst; that same father became the source of all the troubles that befell this 10 year old girl: he chose to wage an holy war against the Grimlael, and to do so this man ended basically destroying both countries, he died soon after and the people poured all their hate on his heir, Emmeryn, they threw rocks at the innocent little girl and we're left to imagine just how bad the abuse might've gotten.

How did that little girl take all of this? Incredibly well apparently, she traveled across Ylisse and worked herself to the bone, and over the course of the following 15 years she completely restored her country, to the point that in the present day everyone loves the Exalt.

But how could she do that, was she that exceptional? Well, yes and no, the truth is, she had no choice but to become strong, no one could protect her from the hate of her people and she couldn't run away, and she couldn't because she had two smaller siblings that needed someone to take care of them; she could've complained, cried, but to what purpose? The only weapon she had was acceptance, she accepted everything given to her, rocks included, she chose to answer everything with a gentle smile, she saw beyond her own suffering and recognized that of her people, and chose to devote herself to healing them.

In doing so however one thing is painfully clear, that Emmeryn could never live for herself, she never had the opportunity to develop a hobby or cultivate friendships, or love, the time she didn't spend being a ruler she spent acting as a mother to Chrom and Lissa, at the end of it all... it's difficult to claim she was ever happy.

When the game starts the situation is on a downward spiral, after a brief respite the previous exalt's sins are coming back again to haunt Ylisse, Emmeryn is ready for it, she doesn't fear Gangrel or the Plegians, she can get through to them like she once did with her people; however, she's tired. Eventually, she's kidnapped and we reach chapter 9 "Emmeryn".

The chapter is titled like this for a reason, in here we have the culmination of this woman's life. At first she's waiting to be saved, but as the situation takes a turn for the worst she becomes an hostage, Chrom is willing to give in to the Mad King's demands, claiming all of them still need his sister, and that prompts Emmeryn to take action; in that moment she looks back at how she lived so far and what she fought for, she realizes that she could never let her family and country sacrifice anything for her, and so she makes her declaration:

"See now that one selfless act has the power to change the world"

No reaction, for a moment she doubts herself, but she doesn't hesitate, for her path was already chosen long ago, she takes one final step forward

    and falls.

    ...

Ultimately, Emmeryn's story is the story of a martyr who sacrifed everything in the name of peace, but in truth, it's also the story of a depressed young woman who lived one of the harshest lives imaginable, who could never be free, who could never be happy, and who eventually killed herself once the burden became too much to bear; death was her salvation.

We barely ever see a single chink in her armor, and yet I think that's the genius of it, Emmeryn had embraced that role, that mask so deeply that there was nothing more of her left.

Does the truth make it so she isn't worthy of the same reverence she gets? I'd argue not, not at all, because in the end it is her humanity that allowed her to change the world, her enemies couldn't be convinced by spiels about peace and love, that's ultimately it was her feelings that got through to them in that last moment.

No one wants to suffer, no one truly wants to make others suffer; once Mustafa and the warriors of Plegia felt that compassion they couldn't raise their weapons anymore, their hatred suddenly seemed too small and petty.

A couple words about Emmeryn coming back in the DLC, i don't consider those canon, more like what if scenarios (Gangrel benefits massively from it though), there's absolutely no way she survived the fall and no one noticed. Discounting that however I don't think it's a bad ending for her: Emmeryn lived her whole life fulfilling a role, and once that was over the only thing left is an husk, a newborn child almost, waiting to be filled in by all sorts of new experiences, an opportunity to finally have the happy life she was once denied (on that note, would've been great if they had changed her portrait, take away the Exalt outfit and give her a big scar, maybe covering the Brand on her forehead).

    Thanks for reading.

TL;DR Emmeryn depressed and this thing ended up way too long -_-''
