Subtextual or Codified, what are some of your favorite same-sex pairings in the series?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:53 AM PDT

Well given it's June, it's topical, so why not breech the subject?

Fire Emblem has historically not been super textual when it comes to same-sex pairings in their titles, often relegating such pairings to subtext, material outside the game, or the surprisingly common ending where they quickly settle down far away from one another despite their unbreakable bond.

Nintendo was pretty consistent on scrubbing most overt references to anything LGBT from their titles through like 2014, where the Tomodachi Life controversy marked a pivot in how they approached the subject. While Awakening had projecting onto a self-insert and marrying a character of your choosing as a marketed game mechanic, it wouldn't be until Fates after player that same-sex pairings were somewhat codified into mechanics as to not completely alienate that portion of their audience.

Despite this rocky path, even before Fates, IS has been able to write some genuinely heartwarming supports between two characters of the same-sex that carry themselves on chemistry and a believable bond, even if the big N's policies beget an abrupt "no-homo" ending. There are many support chains and paired endings that exist out of obligation and an expectation of shacking a guy and girl up together, even in cases where child units aren't a factor. While the presence of an equal number of same-sex supports would probably end up yielding some equally incompatible endings, those present, lackluster, yet codified by mechanics M/F supports can often highlight stellar same-sex chemistry that goes snuffed out.

So I'm curious, in the spirit of the season, what are some of your favorite same-sex pairings in the series, be they codified by mechanics or not?

Personally, I'm particularly partial to Florina as the paired ending for Lyn. She's the only one in FE7's cast to have known the girl before the massacre of the Lorca, and this long standing relationship allows Florina to be the only on in the cast to keen in on Lyn's desire to abdicate and return to the plains as well as actively encourage it. Their Lyn mode ending has some cutesy romantic overtones, and in absence of FE7 giving Lyn an actual conclusion to her personal arc, I find returning to the plains with the person who's known her the longest to be the least demoralizing ending for the girl.

I'm also a sucker for Say'ri and Tiki, but that's carried almost entirely by the dialogue in their A support.

Say'ri: I fear my lifetime is but a few short days compared to yours. Would you still have me, knowing that I cannot stay for long?

Tiki: Without a moment's hesitation. I am used to loss. Do not deprive me from the joy of ever HAVING.

It gets thoroughly "no-homo" friendzoned at the end to unceremoniously walk back the exchange, but corporate policy doesn't suddenly do away with some of the best romance writing Awakening has to offer.

What type of FE player the Lords and MUs would be.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:01 PM PDT

Marth - Is horrified at the thought of losing a unit and would abuse restarting and any "savestate" feature. Somehow however he's played every single game in the series. Major spoilers for several games; He cried over the death that happens in Birthright's route and Revelations, Jerholt's death, Every dad's death now that I think about it, and any other plot death that is not coming to mind nor do I know about please don't post them in the comments. Geneology left him locked up in his room for 3 hours crying and mourning. Seliph and Sigurd are also his favorite lords.

Byleth - Would restart a map if they didn't get a good level up twice in a row.

Ike - Plays for the story and has zero qualms of sending characters he does not like to the slotter house. Ends up near solo running Revelations like a speedrunner because of it.

Ephraim - Has the godlike power of calculating the battle outcomes without the modern battle outcome menu. Hates fog of war maps.

Eirika - Relies on the battle outcome menu like it's her missing right leg. Actually enjoys fog of war maps for the suspense it creates.

Hector - Speedruns fire emblem games, does low turn count shenanigans as warmups.

Lyn - Her first Fire Emblem game was Fire Emblem Heroes. This compelled her to play Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem for the SNES and needed to find a translation - even though she had a working 3DS, DS, and had a Switch at the time as well. She has never emulated videogames before in her life. She beat the game with never promoting a unit because she didn't know how to promote at all. She's been hooked on the series ever since. Marth is also her favorite lord.

F!Kris - Her favorite lord in the series is Rowan. She vouches that he'd be the hottest lord overall too if he'd just use a bow instead of a sword.

Corren - Refuses to play Fire Emblem games with a guide. Trying to play through the series from the beginning but is stuck on the GBA games still because he keeps getting weak pairing endings and he's trying to get better ones for everyone still. Geneology took him 2 years of constant restarts and on and off play to manually figure out how to get the pairings he wanted and not be caught with the autolove feature.

Alm - Streams on twitch his runs of FE Games.

Claude - Same as above but hosts better stream shows - with giveaways and better Twitch emotes.

Mark- Enjoys Randomizer runs and plays through Tear Ring Saga games at least once bi-year.

Leif - Loves GBA Hacks and found the series through the hacking community.

Robin - No matter the game he will always empty out the army's whole arsenal and rearrange their gear on the preparation screen, even if the said game has an auto-fill feature. Still forgets the oddball thing like giving the manakete their stone because they momentarily confused it for another round like object like a Vulnerary.

Ryoma - Awakening was his first game in the series. His avatar married Say'ri. Their Morgan was named ロブスター. Needless to say, he likes having a little bit of fun in his games. Chrom is low key is his favorite lord.

I finally finished Echoes again after a few years. Still the best 3ds game imo

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 04:22 PM PDT

Originally a few weeks ago I made a post on my thoughts of revisiting Echoes. I was on act (3?) and during this time I struggled a lot on Celica's route.

This easily changed after I got my Falcon Knights and Genny to a saint. I'll go over that later though. (This is all a jumbled mess in my mind so please bear with me)

Overall, I thought echoes is still the most solid 3DS game in the franchise. It still disappoints me how underrated it still is though. Personally I thought the voice acting was on par with 3H. Having an avatar in FE for me has always been... I guess decent? Corrin and Kris were examples of the avatar being introduced badly that would even affect the game's narrative. Byleth was introduced significantly better but it didnt feel right, if that makes sense. The silent protagonist for me doesnt really appeal to the narrative and overall makes the games weaker. Echoes implements full voice acting amongst the characters and there isn't really a silent protagonist or someone who could be identified as a self insert character. I feel like the dynamic between characters and their hardships together really coincides to a story rather than silent speaking in this case. Alm and Clive's dynamic throughout the story really gave out the fact that these people are human. They have flaws, and they have doubts. Clive slowly builds trust towards Alm and it builds until endgame. Some other examples would be Forsyth and Python, Tobin and Gray, And Mae and Boey.

This has also been one of the only games in the franchise where i legitimately cried. Later half of act 4 and act 5 hurt a lot. Personally the way Echoes introduces these things has been THE best in the franchise for me and voice acting made it what it is. God, the voice acting gave it so much flavor.

in my earlier post i remarked at the fact that the maps were aids essentially. And honestly, its not that bad. As stated, almost immediately after Grieth's Arc I got my two falcon knights and a saint (with seraphim!!!). This made the game significantly easier to play and easier to peel with some units. (Can we also agree that Dread Fighters are the best class in the game?). The poison maps were way easier thanks to the falcon knights. And overall the gameplay got better and easier with the promotions. What i personally loved about it more than any other game is the balancing of hp and magic. It really gave another layer of gameplay and thinking for you to either play aggresively or passively. Endgame was WAY easier than I remembered. By utilizing Invoke, you can essentially send dread fighters to deal with the witches and to have them set the timer for jedah closer to be hit. Jedah was a joke in endgame. (Tatiana is still a goddess though. Fortify is great).

Echoes is probably my favorite fe game besides Thracia or Genealogy strictly for narrative. The message in echoes was probably one of the best in the series for me. Im really glad i revisited the game and hope other people can play it too!

Also the miss/parry animations are the best no cap

Ideas for a future fire emblem game?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:06 PM PDT

Pretty simple. What ideas do you have for a future fire emblem game? Whether it's story, characters or gameplay related, please tell us.

Me personally, I'd like to see a game based on the first exalt aka the one who first fought Grima. I mainly want to see Grima's first host and how the relationship between that host and the first exalt would be in comparison to Robin and Chrom's relationship. Would they be best friends, bitter rivals, mortal enemies, tragic lovers, etc. It's something I'd really like to see someday.

Gameplay wise something I'd kind of like to see is kind of a spin on the Mila's turn wheel concept. Basically when an ally dies, you have the option to rewind the clock to that allies last turn and save them. However later in the game, a chapter appears where there's an enemy for every time you've used this mechanic. So basically if you've used it 50 times, there's 50 enemies plus the boss. I think it could be interesting especially if the whole reverse time thing is going to possibly become a recurring feature in the future games.

Well those were my minor ideas, anyone else got any?

What are your favourite additions or improvements to the series?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2020 05:15 PM PDT

I've been replaying PoR for the first/second time (started it about a year ago but never finished) and whilst I've really been enjoying it so far, I really, really, really miss the skip turn function in the newer games. The graphics and models are actually not that bad to look at and the cutscenes are surprisingly good (I actually like them better than SoV/3H's, bar the voice acting), but holy shit the enemy phases take SO long, even with animations turned off. All this time I've been taking the skip turn button for granted.

What are some other additions or QOL improvements do you guys like the most? (E.g. addition of gambits, removal of AS in FE 12-14 etc).
