Can we please stop conflating "I dislike this character" and "I think this character is poorly written"?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:06 AM PDT

Dear FE fandom: "I dislike this character" and "I think this character is poorly written" are two entirely different sentiments. Please stop assuming believing one means believing the other.

Yes, it is possible to like a well-written asshole/villain because they're interesting/realistic/entertaining/etc. But you can also hate them, because... they're assholes. What a concept! What's more, you can hate them even though - or even because - they're well-written! Because that makes them a more effective or believable asshole!

Basically, I want to stop seeing the same damn exchanges every time:

    User A: I hate Makalbert!

    User B: HE'S WELL-WRITTEN THOUGH.

We all know that, guys. We all know.

[FE4 Character Discussion] Examining the Crusaders #12 - Ayra, Astra's Wielder

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:07 AM PDT

Welcome back to Examining the Crusaders, the series where we analyze the character of all of the playable units in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. Last time we looked at Dew, Childish Thief. Dew is a young child who gets enjoyment out of committing mischief, primarily through thievery. He also, like a young child, is impatient. However, he has a good heart and does not do things with bad intent; later on in the game, we see that he matures and looks to be respected more. Today we are going to look at the Isaachian swordswoman Ayra, Astra's Wielder.

    ------

Ayra is a myrmidon who is a princess from Isaach. She is the daughter of King Mananan and the younger sister of the inheritor of the Balmung, Prince Mariccle; thus, she carries minor Od blood. Sometime before the events of FE4 after the war between Grannvale and Isaach began, Ayra was instructed by Mariccle to flee with his son Shannan and protect him; she then fled to Verdane. She then had to be hired by Prince Kinbois of Verdane as a mercenary to support them.

    ------

Chapter 1 introduction: Kinbois reminds Ayra of their agreement: Ayra will guard Genoa while Kinbois is fighting, and if she attempts to betray him then Shannan will be killed. Shannan tries to convince Ayra that he can defend himself; Ayra, ignoring him, agrees but tells Kinbois that he must leave Shannan alone and asks that he return Shannan after the Grannvale army is defeated. Kinbois laughs and promises her that if he is able to take Evans back from Grannvale, Shannan will be returned to her. Ayra then cautions Kinbois that if he reneges on his promise, she will not hesitate to kill him in return; Kinbois is slightly frightened that Ayra became so threatening and promises once again that he will not try to cross her and face her wrath. Ayra then asks Shannan to "sit tight" while she goes out to fight against Shannan's wishes which he screams out.

After Genoa is seized by Sigurd, Ayra is alarmed and says that she must return to Shannan.

Ayra is introduced here; she has to make the tough decision to fight with the Verdanians even if she has issues with them in order to protect her nephew Shannan. We then see her exhibit her short temper as she threatens Kinbois' life; Ayra's temper is one of the defining traits of her character to the point where her name is a pun related to that. On the flipside, Ayra is loyal to the promise she has made to Kinbois. She does not show any signs of hesitating when Kinbois asks her to go out and fight for him as she is loyal to the promises she makes. Only when Genoa is seized and Kinbois is dead is when Ayra deviates from her original course and tries to save Shannan; at that point, she is concerned that he is going to be taken hostage by Sigurd.

    ------

Chapter 1 conversation with Sigurd: Sigurd yells out to Ayra that she does not have to continue fighting because they have Shannan safe. Ayra is in disbelief that Sigurd, a Grannvalian noble, would save her nephew; however, Sigurd tells Ayra that Shannan told her their story. He asks Ayra to put aside her hatred for Grannvale and prioritize caring for Shannan over "wasting her life;" Ayra responds that she cannot die here for Verdane's sake and must fulfill her late brother's wish of putting Shannan on the throne of Isaach. Sigurd swears that he will not betray Ayra; Ayra then agrees to trust Sigurd and come to his assistance, but warns that if Sigurd becomes her foe, she will not hesitate to fight. Sigurd agrees that "war can be truly cruel" and says that he will pray that it never comes to this scenario.

Sigurd shocks Ayra by putting Shannan's safety over his own country's interests and choosing to shelter him. Ayra chooses to repay him by doing the same; putting Shannan's safety over her own prejudices towards Grannvale and allying with Sigurd. This shows that her first priority is fulfilling her brother's request and protecting Shannan until he can protect himself. She does not, however, hesitate to defect from Sigurd if he were to become her foe.

    ------

Chapter 1 conversation with Quan: Quan introduces himself to Ayra and immediately asks her why Isaach and Ayra's father King Mananan attacked Darna knowing that it would incense Grannvale. Ayra is shocked that Quan knows of Mananan; Quan says that his father Calf knew Mananan and had nothing but praise for him and for Ayra's older brother Prince Mariccle. After this Ayra says that the attack on Darna was perpetrated by the Rivough clan without Mananan's approval. This too shocks Quan, who interrupts her and asks why Grannvale had not heard of this and stopped the war efforts. Ayra then explains that after the execution of the Patriarch of Rivough for this unprompted attack, Mananan attempted to go to Grannvale to explain but was assassinated en route; Mariccle then went out to battle seeking revenge along with the rest of the Isaachian army. Quan notes that something must be off because it would be uncharacteristic of Kurth to assassinate Mananan and asks Ayra if she told Sigurd the full story; she did not. Ayra then tells Quan that Mariccle seemingly was expecting to die in battle and entrusted Shannan to her as Isaach's last hope; Quan then thanks Ayra for telling him the story and promises he can do everything within his power to help her. In return, Ayra thanks Quan for listening.

As noted in the Quan episode, this is primarily an exposition dump yet one that still provides insight into characterization. Ayra may have a short temper but she is still amicable to people who greet her politely like Quan. Ayra then calmly tells Quan the full story of Isaach's entry into the war despite the fact that the latter continues to interrupt her. We also see that the emotions of the fate of her family weighs down on her; the normally energetic Ayra is more solemn as she describes how her father was killed and her brother resigned to the fate of dying a warrior's death. Neither Mananan nor Mariccle are seen, however we can see that Ayra had a close relationship to both just as she does to her nephew. It was probably emotional for her to have to let go of them; nonetheless, it strengthens her determination to fulfill her brother's last wishes and raise Shannan right so he can take his rightful place on the throne when he is grown up.

    ------

Chapter 3 conversation with Lex: Lex calls out to Ayra; Ayra is annoyed by this and asks frustratedly what he wants of her. She says that she does not want to waste too much time on him. Lex then tells Ayra that he has a gift for her. Ayra tries to deny the gift as she thinks it is a mere "trinket" until Lex shows the gift, a brave sword. Ayra is shocked by this as brave swords are very rare; Lex then says that he is glad that she likes it and leaves the brave sword with her. Ayra is left confused after Lex darts off.

Here, Ayra's short temper comes up once again as she gets angry with Lex even though his intentions are rather innocuous. She jumps to the conclusion that Lex wants to dump an inexpensive gift on her like flowers to win her courtship; shockingly for her, Lex instead gives a valuable brave sword. For the rest of the talk she is stunned by the fact that Lex cared for her enough to give her such a useful thing. The arc between her and Lex will continue in their Chapter 5 conversation where they have become a married couple with children.

    ------

Chapter 3 conversation with Chulainn: Chulainn catches Ayra's attention and gives her a brave sword. Ayra asks Chulainn why he doesn't want to keep it for himself; he responds that since the war is going to get harder, Ayra should get to have a spare weapon. He then asks Ayra to look out for herself. After this, Ayra thanks Chulainn and promises to put the brave sword to good use.

Ayra is much more cordial to Chulainn than she is to Lex; the reason for this is never explained. Maybe it is because of Chulainn being less brash than Lex; or maybe it is because of her relationship to him that is expanded upon in their Chapter 5 conversation. Regardless, this shows that Ayra isn't always aggressive and intimidating as she appears at first; she can be nice to people as well.

    ------

Chapter 5 conversation with Sigurd: Sigurd is startled that Ayra is still out fighting and asks her why she didn't go with Oifey and Shannan to Isaach as she was asked to. Ayra responds that she would have regretted abandoning Sigurd and pledges to be with him until the end. Sigurd asks how she will protect Shannan, but Ayra says that "her work is done" as Shannan has grown up into a young man. Sigurd seemingly objects but is interrupted by Ayra, who says that after the war is done she will return to Isaach; until then, she will continue to fight for Sigurd.

The main purpose of this conversation is to show Ayra's commitment to her promise she made to Sigurd in the first chapter; more importantly though, she is committed to her warrior ideals. She could have easily fled to safety in Isaach with her nephew; in fact that is what everyone around her (including Sigurd) was expecting for her to do. Instead, she chooses to continue fighting for Sigurd to try to get an end to the war. She feels bound to honor her promise of continuing to fight alongside Sigurd; it's quite likely that this is because she wants to repay Sigurd for having mercy on herself and Shannan. Ayra's warrior mentality just will not die here; she perseveres and continues to abide by it as she feels that she has completed her other goal of raising Shannan to where he can take care of himself.

    ------

Chapter 5 conversation with Lex: Ayra notes that the battle seems to be coming to an end soon. Lex asks Ayra why she hasn't gone to Isaach with their children (Larcei and Ulster). Ayra angrily asks him why she should go with them, implying that Lex only requests this because of her gender; she then reminds him that he is responsible for Larcei and Ulster as well because he is their father. Lex agrees with her sentiment and apologizes, but he still reiterates that he feels that the children shouldn't be abandoned. In response, Ayra promises that after the war is over, they will return to Isaach for the children. Lex accepts the promise and pushes forward to "get it over with;" Ayra apologizes to Lex for being too much into fighting. Lex assures Ayra that it is fine because that is what he sees in her; he then makes his own promise that they will be together no matter what happens. The conversation ends with Ayra thanking Lex for this.

The character arc with Lex continues here. Lex argues that Ayra should have returned to Isaach with Larcei and Ulster; in his mind, Ayra as their mother is responsible for ensuring their care. Ayra disagrees strongly with this as she sees herself not as a domestic caretaker but as a warrior who is equal to her husband. She is not afraid to assert this to Lex in an aggressive way as the warrior she is. Later however, Ayra realizes that it may have been shortsighted of her to act in such a way, that it is a shortcoming that she is so focused on fighting above everything else. She isn't too stubborn as she apologizes to Lex for this. She is aware of her faults and tries to grow from them instead of continuing to be stubborn in her ways much like Lex is. This is indicative of a healthy relationship between Lex and Ayra. They don't agree on everything but when they have disagreements, they are able to constructively settle their disagreements, recognize their faults, and grow from the experience. This probably makes Lex and Ayra one of the better written couples in the game as their relationship is portrayed in a realistic manner.

    ------

Chapter 5 conversation with Chulainn: Ayra notes that the war is coming to an end to which Chulainn nods. However, Ayra wants to ask one last thing of Chulainn: she asks why Chulainn has always spoken of wanting to protect her. Chulainn responds that he has known her since they were children; nothing is more important to him than Ayra's safety. Ayra is flabbergasted as she realizes who Chulainn is; Chulainn confirms that he is, in fact, the son of the Lord of Sophara who has always had a crush on Ayra.

There isn't really much depth in terms of characterization in this conversation; it mostly provides development on Chulainn's side. Ayra is still friendly to Chulainn (or at least more so than she is to others) as she may subconsciously remember that they were friends when they were children. Afterwards, she is shocked to realize that Chulainn was her childhood friend whom she played with; this is probably very emotional for her to realize as she probably has some good memories with Chulainn. It shows the softer side of Ayra which oftentimes does not show up in dialogue.

On a side note, I don't think this relationship is incestuous. Ayra and Chulainn share holy blood and thus are both descendants of Od; however, this does not necessarily mean they are first cousins. 100 years have passed since Od's lifetime, and it is quite possible that the cadet branch of the royal house of Isaach which Chulainn is a part of separated quite a few generations ago.

    ------

Chapter 5 conversation with Arden: Ayra asks Arden if he is doing fine; Arden responds that he is being weighed down by his armor. Ayra laughs and jokingly responds that he looks "manly" in the armor. Arden thanks her for this comment and replies that Ayra looks womanly as well. Ayra believes that this is a joke at first but Arden confirms that he means what he said as he proclaims her to be the "loveliest lass" that he has ever met. Ayra asks once again if Arden is feeling alright; Arden laments that he can't control himself from saying this stuff and says that he loves Ayra. This leaves Ayra swooning for Arden.

Ayra is just shocked that anyone would consider her to be especially "womanly." This is not a major part of her psyche; we saw this in the Chapter 3 conversation with Lex where she initially rejected his gift because she thought it would be a cheap attempt at courtship. But Arden in a way melts her heart as he continues to reaffirm his affection for Ayra. This results in the "wholesome" moment as Ayra realizes that Arden truly appreciates her for who she is and that she in turn has feelings for Arden.

    ------

Final thoughts: Ayra at first appears to be this tough warrior who is stubborn and will always fight to the death. However, there are other aspects to her as well. She is honorbound to serve other people, especially her nephew Shannan and Sigurd who had mercy on her and Shannan. Her promise to Sigurd in particular carried so much weight that when she felt Shannan could protect himself on his own, she was fine with letting him go so she could continue to fight alongside Sigurd and repay him. Ayra also is aware of some of her faults; we see this as she apologizes to Lex for being too short-tempered when he questions her decision to separate from their children. Overall, Ayra is more than just being the personification of wrath as she has more facets to her character than that.

Thanks for reading today's episode. Next time we will discuss Jamke, Prince of Verdane. See you then!

Characters you like that you also find overrated?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 01:40 PM PDT

You know, when there's a character you like but you feel they get a little too much praise than they deserve?

    For me

Lukas: Lukas is a fine character, but why do people find him attractive? I honestly find his design and his dry nature to be kinda boring despite the fact that I like him. Yes, I've read his supports and played SoV, but he's just not super charming for me to rate him among the top of my characters list. What I really don't understand is why people like his voice so much. It bores because of how little emotion there is in it me yet everyone claims it's like honey. I just see all these fangirls of him and all these guys becoming gay for him, and I just don't understand why they think he's sooooo attractive.

Delthea: This is the main one. She's cheerful and has a realistic sibling relationship with Luthier, but wow people really take a liking to Delthea. Her self-absorbed and kinda rude attitude, especially towards Luthier, really gets on my nerves. I don't know how people can think that's cute. And I get she's got a lot of potential as a unit, but why do people call her "the best unit in Echoes", when she actually starts off really weak and takes a long time to level up. People really overhype her gameplay performance because they love those big numbers while they usually ignore her flaws like her lack of 1-3 range spells (besides overclass in SoV). This is probably my Luthier bias calling, but I think Delthea's pretty overrated as a character because of her attitude and for gameplay because she takes a while to level up, and people really overuse, overhype, and overestimate magic loli nukes, or magical glass cannons in general.

Tana (to a certain extent): Yeah, she's cheerful, sociable, loves Innes, and still has a duty for Frelia, but it kinda bugs me to see her being used all of the time and when people claim she's "one of the best units in SS." This is probably because I prefer Vanessa, but it just seems a bit sad that Tana gets pretty much all of the spotlight when compared to Vanessa. Idk, I just prefer the serious and dutiful characters more.
