So today, the voice of Ashe, Shannon McKain, livestreamed his signing on Instagram. Someone got inspired to draw Ashe based on what happened. This is what it looks like. Here is the link to the tweet of the actual artist. Tweet to original post: https://twitter.com/Roxushi/status/128712184365717913

Combat vs Stats, why context matters in unit performance more than raw values

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Edit: Title meant to be "Combat vs Movement"... I am just a fool (just pretend movement is the stat I am talking about here)

Fire Emblem is a series with maps & objectives with enemies blocking you from that objective. Some people like to try playing these maps as fast as they can handle these maps, and if you care about any pace resembling faster play this you have very likely picked up on the idea that cavaliers and fliers are good whereas slow armors bad.

This is obvious to anyone who has seen something like... Mekkah's informative pitfall videos, but I think this community has started warping itself around almost caring about movement potentially too much.

While movement in a countless number of situations is absolutely what matters, where the best units in most game have near ideal movement (ie the busted jagens/or snowballing fliers), I think people have forgotten that at times combat vs movement does exist. This generally applies to games with tighter/harder to reach combat benchmarks but I still feel it applies to every title around in at least one situation.

FE8, despite the generally easy reputation has a famous split example of the Combat and 1-2 routing of Hero vs Movement and utility of Ranger (Bow Knight) on promotion for Gerik the level 10 Mercenary kindly showing up with his own hero crest to use. I am of the opinion backing Hero Gerik asides from it being his canon class with very strong 1-2 that only Seth, trained and statbooster fed fliers, and maybe Duessel can do, but has have but the ability to access Garm at no speed loss gives Gerik +5 speed which is an almost guarantee way to tear through most of the back end of the campaign in a game that lacks particularly strong endgame handouts that most other FEs have. Ranger is still a good class and assists in peak LTC if you care, but in most situations and context of plays Hero acts as a reliable way to dispatch enemies other units don't have the combination of speed/strength for.

One example that really backs this claim is in the FE12 prologue on higher difficulties. There are many successful builds as Fighter/Knight/Merc and ect but Luke and Rodey join in P-3 better movement as 9 move Cavaliers, but really no one in their right mind would say either of those two scratch what work Kris puts in on that prolouge compared to them. This is because their movement doesn't get to matter and the prologue is such a tight corridors space that combat is king.

Birthright and Conquest each have their own arguments of combat vs movement. Specifically in BR where the class of Ninja line is treated as by far the best in the game in the context of a rout heavy where 1-2 rains supreme where Kaze/Saizo/Kagero are all god tier units despite the fact Pegasus Knight Hinoka and (lol) subaki start off with more movement than them but just can't compare to the 1-2 slaughterfest the ninjas leave in their wake. Getting a bit more specific in Conquest Wyverns are treated as the best classline in the game for both the power and mobility they offer, however Conquest still has a very very deliberate situation at the end of chapter 16 when you get to spare or kill shura for a pair of boots that give +1 movement. For the longest time Shura has been very overlooked in favor of +1 movement because boots are generally so powerful within FE but when you breakdown the chapters the +1 gained movement doesn't matter in helping with many clears without near ltc levels of planning likely needing shove/swap already from captures. Shura on the other hand is a combat unit with immense B A S E S and greatly assists in chapter 17, known as Ninja hell by many and the man absolutely works just as hard as forged jav Xander does. I'll link to a great write up detailing what you can do with him.

To really drive home about context I'll cite an example of where Combat/other stats matter more than movement, the game where movement is the most important it's ever been in the series... as in yes Fire Emblem 4 aka Mount Emblem, the supreme horsie game where there is at least a single instance of unit debate within Lewyn!Ced vs Lewyn!Arthur. Lewyn!Arthur is a unit that starts with a chapter 6 Holy Weapon in gen 2.... and who cares? Many of FE4's generic enemies are mega chumps where it's disappointing if you can't one round them. Some people tout the ability of a 1-2 holy weapon on horseback but it's nothing significant a crit Jav or crit lightbrand can't do on Seliph/Oifey/Ares and even Leif after he promotes. The times you actually want Forseti for combat in Gen 2 is for Chapter 10 Arvis and many strong endgame enemies. Lewyn!Arthur chokes at the end with his caps and expected stats making it not possible to pick up the Arvis one round while Ced can with better accuracy and has better reliability in adept procs. The magic you need for Arvis is 25 magic before the magic ring (mage knight cap is 25 but Arthur is well below even at hypothetical level 30 averages), and Ced can silence the threatening Ishtar in Endgame if he reaches 28 magic before the magic ring. Not to mention general Sage class resistance bases assisting in helping Ced avoid getting status staffed which can be annoying in endgame and Arthur will likely have half as much as Ced ends up with.

However for every example where Combat > Movement, I am sure there are plenty more the other way around where movement and the mounted class traits matter more even in the games I listed [lol Seth's combat and movement/lol Palla/Catria as dracoknight/lol Midir vs Jamke]. This article was not about saying "movement is overrated only care about units stats", it's more just make sure you don't overlook good and meaningful combat when trying to play/talk about this series, because after all movement is just another stat on a unit.
