Shadows of Valentia Discussion Series - Kamui: Steel Admist the Sands

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:12 PM PDT

    Today, we are discussing Kamui.

Kamui is a playable character in Shadows of Valentia.

A mercenary from a distant nation, who was hired by Valbar, Kamui used to live a nomadic live with his family. However, they got into a scuffle with another tribe and lost, which led them to settle in a town. Unable to adjust to this lifestyle, Kamui set out on a journey, with his swordsmanship being honed due to his wanderings

After Barth is defeated, he joins Celica's party. After the war, he joins Jesse in building their own country in the lands that once belonged to Grieth. If Jesse is dead, he founds the country in his place.

    Kamui is supported by:

The Flame Emperor hiring Kostas is among one of the smartest tactical choices in the series in all honesty

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:37 AM PDT

I see Flame Emperor and Kostas have a lot of debate about semantics and what they really meant and honestly... I think it's almost all hogwash. I see it all as a whitewashing mess towards Edelgard and deprives her of being a calculating individual and one that will go to any lengths to fulfill her aspirations, the best traits of her as a character and lord.

Edelgard/Flame Emperor hired Kostas to kill some rich punks. That's all he was told.

Kostas: What is this nonsense?! All I was told was to kill as many noble pipsqueaks as possible! No one said anything about the Knights of damned Seiros being on our trail!

The Flame Emperor kept him and his gang in the dark about who was there and who was guarding them.

Let's breakdown what would have happened if he succeeded:

First of all removing two heirs of countries would generally be a large move in any fictional world but remember that the Kingdom is in large unrest after the previous rulers died tragically and required Dimitri's uncle to step up that not everyone has loved. The Alliance in general is not the most stable, but not inherently unstable. If the new revealed heir were to suddenly die after his existence was briefly mentioned you could assume inheritance of the leader of the alliance would cause immense strife and uncertainty within their lands.

There is one thing for certain however,

That both the Kingdom and Alliance would look to the Church/Knights of Serios's incompetence and failings to protect the most important people within their nation. Most of the continent would be aware of their embarrassing failures plunging people to try and distance and has sown unrest into the church.

And the best part for the Flame Emperor?

It's just a generic bandit attack by a shallow bandit with nothing special to gain.

There is no attention being drawn by a targeted Hubert removal or making a scene like death knight if Edelgard just wanted the heirs of the Alliance and Kingdom dead. This would be a fantastic piece for her to base her campaign around denouncing the Church of Serios when she would become Emperor of the Adrestian Empire and attack the church. Would the Kingdom of Fargus really keep them around? Would people support their cause or join the army?

I really think no. Which is basically why the second half of CF exists, the Kingdom just houses Rhea and the Church.

All in all I think Edelgard's plan was a great idea and I get really frustrated when I see people try to argue she wanted to do something completely different when it really is just a concise effective idea to try and ambush two future leaders at night but just happened to not work out.

Would 3H be different if they made the two Byleths as siblings?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 12:33 PM PDT

So I went back to Astral Chain recently, a game that also has an avatar selection like 3H. The difference between them is that depending on the gender you choose, the other is your sibling and becomes part of the story.

Would 3H be different if the Byleths were siblings or at least affected some things in some way? Like you would at least hear one gender speak and have more personality.
