How advanced, technologically, should the world of FE be?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:12 PM PDT

You see these topics come up again and again. "Should FE have guns?", "Could a modern FE work?", "What if FE went to space like they planned in Awakening?", etc. Some are shitposts, but plenty are legitimate questions as well. Normally, people brush them off by saying that FE should stay medieval or Advance Wars already fills the space of modern TRPG. But, I think that there is a legitimate conversation to be had on how much technological advancements should there be in the world of Fire Emblem.

As we've seen in plenty games, there is definitely some technological advancement; ballistas, catapults, crossbows and in Three Houses some gambits use gunpowder. So, it's not like they're completely in the dark technologically. But that's not what most people are talking about. They're thinking of early guns like muskets and the like. Personally, I think they could work, the earliest musket was in 1498 which isn't too off from being an actual medieval weapon. In fact, I think an FE based near the start of the industrial period could work as well since it's still not too advanced.

But another issue arises when people want to take it to extremes. Such as a sci-fi FE, or even a modern day FE. Now, once again, these could work, but they have a consequence; they lose the spirit of the older games. When they lose the medieval environment, they begin to lose more of what it is as a series. Look at Final Fantasy, the original games and 9 are extremely far apart from the fantasy-sci-fi thing they got going. It's resulted in an overall loss of identity of what the series is exactly. The same thing would happen to FE.

What's interesting is that the more recent games seem to be more willing to use advanced technology, like the usage of gunpowder or the existence of the Agarthans and their technology. Though, the latter is a specific case, the point still stands. Maybe in the future we could see a new game that uses a more advanced environment. Maybe not. Who knows?

Overall, when it comes to me, I wouldn't mind a slightly more advanced FE as long as it's still a good game. But what do all of you think? How far technologically should the series go, if at all? Would you be interested or even excited to play a game that takes place in the future? Or maybe we should head backwards, make a game in the real olden days?

"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 14: Archest of Archers

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:49 PM PDT

    Chapter 13

Do you feel as though your week is lacking something? Has it been boring or tedious? Or maybe instead, you've been faced with an unexpected surprise? Not been able to finish all that you set out to do? Or having trouble even setting out? Well, I'm here to provide little more than a band-aid, a trite distraction of no consequence in an uncaring world! That's right, it's time once more for "What If?" Wednesdays, the thread where we speculate on "what could be" in Fire Emblem gameplay. Player Phase, start!

The Archer class - and its promotion, Sniper - are mainstays of the Fire Emblem series at this point. Specializing in the bow, they attack foes at 2-range, often doing most of their work on the player phase. Their utility often depends on the game in question - how important is enemy-phase performance? And how common are fliers, who tend to be weak to bows? Certain games, especially recent ones, have taken steps to improve Archers, and bow-users in general. In Shadows of Valentia, a remake of Gaiden, all bows have 1-3 range. What's more, Archers have Bowrange+1 as a class skill, while Snipers and Bow Knights have Bowrange+2. Three Houses is similar in terms of skills, with the caveat that 1-range countering comes from the Close Counter skill, Snipers are demoted to Bowrange+1, and bow attacks beyond 2-range suffer a hit penalty.

These changes have hugely impacted how Archers and Snipers can be used in these games, as compared to older titles. Now, they can perform on enemy phase, and they can achieve hits that weapons like Javelins and Hand Axes miss out on. But what if some of these changes were applied to older games? What if buffs to the Archer classes, such as Bowrange+1 and Close Counter, were applied to their incarnations in games before FE15? Basically, suppose that Archers, and their infantry promotions, get these skills in older games. Bow Fighter from Jugdral can be considered the same class, but I would not count Hunters for this. How would this affect class and unit balance? How would this change the way you play the game? And do you prefer these kinds of skills on Archers, or should they be limited to 2-range? If you wish to consider the effects of just one of the skills, or a bigger buff to bows (say, generalized 1-3 range), that's welcome too.

In any case, thanks for reading. I'll be posting my own answer below in just a little bit - but I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say. Thanks, and keep playing Fire Emblem!
