/r/FireEmblem Best Of 2020 Awards: Submissions Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:01 PM PST Hello, everyone! Happy Holidays, and welcome to the Sixth annual /r/fireemblem Best Of awards! 2020 has definately been a rough year with the pandemic. We had a few things going on Fire Emblem related though. After all, this year was the 30th aniniversary of the series! Byleth got announced and released for smash(Yeah that was this year), bringing a new stage, some music while also bringing FE up to 8 characters in the game. The final DLC for Three Houses was released with Cindered Shadows, giving us some new story, new characters and new classes. We also saw the special limited release and localization of the very first FE game, Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. On top of that, the subreddit crossed the 250,000 subscribers mark! With that said, it is once again time for another round of /r/FireEmblem Best Of Awards. Submissions should be posted in this topic. New submissions will be accepted for about a week - 11:59:59PM PST on January 9th. After all submissions are collected, we moderators will narrow down the field to a selection of what we believe are the best candidates, and then will leave the determination of the winners to a community vote. Here are the details on submission guidelines:
The categories are as follows: Best Mechanical Discussion: This award is for the best individual contribution to discussion about Fire Emblem series mechanics. Contributions should be considered not only on their original insight but also on also on their presentation. That is to say, there is just as much merit to a dramatically new perspective on a character's viability as there is to a well-researched and well-put-together guide on character viability for people who aren't experts on the topic. Best Character/Story Discussion: This award is for the best individual contribution to discussion about the writing of the Fire Emblem series. Again, contributions should be considered not only on their insight but also on their presentation. Best Original Creative Work: This award is pretty much what it sounds like. Art, writing, music, or any other relevant application of the creative arts will be accepted in this category. Remember that the work in question needs to have been submitted to this subreddit either by the creator or with their direct recognition. Best Original Humor: The most straightforward award. We make a lot of jokes here, and this is for the best of them. Best Gameplay Exhibition: This award is for the most memorable displays of Fire Emblem gameplay over the course of the year. Raw skill need not be the sole determining factor - a memorable challenge playthrough, for instance, would also qualify. In your nomination posts, please provide a link to the item in question, the category for which it is being nominated, and a brief description of why you are nominating it. Please refrain from badmouthing other people's nominations, as we do not want to discourage submissions. However, please only nominate content that you legitimately believe to be deserving of the award. Obviously non-serious submissions will be deleted. Also, feel free to ask any questions you might have. Thank you very much, and we look forward to seeing your submissions! [link] [comments]

My favorite StreetPass memory. Posted: 29 Dec 2020 06:20 PM PST Just remembered that this happened a few years ago and thought others might get a kick out of it. A unique kind of story and human connection that could only happen through 3DS StreetPass, and I'm so sad that the Switch got rid of it... Anyways. For the uninitiated, in Fire Emblem Fates you can recruit characters from other people's castles. It's a loooot more useful than in 3H since 1. you can choose the skills you want to keep 2. you can keep the recruit. Generally, though, you'd just use this to get skills for your own characters (e.g. recruiting someone else's Kaze to get skills for your own Kaze) and then discard the recruit immediately after. Keeping a recruit in your army is pretty pointless since they can't get supports, can't be customized, limited class options, etc. A guy I streetpassed not only recruited my avatar and used it in their army, but also set up their castle army so that it only had my avatar and their avatar. Renamed their castle to "Ft. hyo_hyo", changed their calling card to have the tagline "hyo_hyo's #1 stan", maxed out my avatar's levels, gave the two avatars customized weapons forged with names that said "we are BFFs" and that kind of thing. It was so fucking stupid and hilarious, so obviously I did the same thing right back. There's obviously no way to actually chat (Nintendo amirite?), so we were only able to communicate by changing the names of the forged weapons. ("Merry holidays" "to hyo_hyo" "and" "happy new year!" ":D") Just two matching castles with two BFF avatars from two people who randomly passed by one another and never met again. We both kept up these dumb castles and exchanged accessories for weeks. I have no idea what compelled this guy to do this, but it remains one of my favorite 3DS memories. And remembering this, I'm so, so sad that the Switch did away with StreetPass. It was always so exciting to see StreetPass notifications - made you feel like you were part of a broader community of players. It's such a small thing but I really miss it. I really hope Nintendo brings it back. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:14 AM PST There's a lot of new fans to Fire Emblem. Many have only played Three Houses, many more have only played games from Awakening onward. If an older title were to be released again to the new audience, who would become the popular characters? Unpopular? Controversial? Do you think this would change from how the characters are perceived now by current fans of those titles or do you think it'd be different? [link] [comments]

Getting really pissed off with the writing in FE3H Posted: 29 Dec 2020 02:51 PM PST It seems like the only way the writers know to make the players get invested in the story is to have some stupid mystery that is about to be revealed, and then just as someone is about to say it, they get interrupted and can't say it. This might be one of the laziest forms of storytelling I've seen in a so-called "story focused" game. I just finished the chapter where you fight the demonic beasts with Jeralt and oh man is that trope in full force here. Sorry, just had to rant a little about the game. I got it after loving 6 and 7 and this just feels like so much of a step down I have a hard time believing it's made by the same people. [link] [comments]
What kind of object would you like the Fire Emblem to be in a future game? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:44 AM PST When you consider all the games in the series, every continent besides Valentia includes its own item/MacGuffin known as the Fire Emblem. While Valentia doesn't have its own Fire Emblem, it's still in the same universe as Archanea's. In different games, their universe's Emblem has been a shield (FE1/FE2/FE3/FE11/FE12/FE13/FE15), a family symbol (FE4/FE5), a gem (FE6/FE7), a stone (FE8), a necklace (FE9/FE10), a sword (FE14), or a magical crest (FE16). In the next original FE game, what kind of object would you like to see the Fire Emblem become? Personally, I've been interested in the idea of the Fire Emblem being a person. One idea is for it to be a reincarnated being similar to the Avatar in Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I'm not sure if IS would do something like that since reincarnation is historically an Eastern concept while the series typically draws from Western mythology. Another idea could be that the Fire Emblem is a long-living person (like a sage) who has mastery over the element of fire. Perhaps he or she could be the "key" to unlock some secret. Hell, maybe that's the name of their unique class. Considering the most known Fire Emblem is a shield, maybe it could follow a similar path by becoming a ring or accessory you can equip in the game. Perhaps it raises several of the main character's stats and gives them access to a unique skill. It could also be a relic that gives a passive ability such as negating critical hits or effective damage (like the Rafail Gem). Again, this would be going down a more traditional route, but everything's a possibility. I usually like it when the Fire Emblem comes from an unexpected place. In the Tellius games, I like that it's a necklace in which you don't immediately recognize its significance. Lehran's Medallion does play a big role in the games, but you don't realize why it's important until much later in FE9's story. The Fire Emblem in FE4 is the crest of Velthomer, which acts as the symbol for the family. Considering that family is the major force in the story, the Fire Emblem is a nice detail that represents a major aspect of the game without being a major plot device itself (as the Fire Emblem isn't mentioned until the end of the game). It's also nice when its an object that has no significant bearing on the plot. As I've mentioned, Valentia does not have its own Emblem, so the plot in FE2/FE15 not revolving around some kind of Fire Emblem is sort of refreshing in a way. I haven't played FE5 yet, but I have to assume the crest of Velthomer doesn't play a significant role unless Julius himself has a major impact on the plot. My point is that sometimes the Fire Emblem can just be a cool detail of lore within the universe rather than the big MacGuffin of the story. What are some ideas you have for what the Fire Emblem could be? [link] [comments]
What piece of music from the series hit you really hard emotionally? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 09:13 AM PST Fire Emblem is known for its generally amazing soundtracks. So I wanted to ask you all to share what piece of music really makes you feel emotions. Sadness, happiness, truimph, go ahead go crazy! Here are mine: fe1/fe11 Something about the cheesy victory theme sates the inner desire for cheese I have. Also it's just nice to listen to after seeing Marth through go through all the shit he has to endure. It's genuinely just a nice change of pace from the otherwise tense music. The recruitment theme is also just timeless imo. fe2 The final battle against Judah and Duma is some of the most tense battles I've played. The final stretch of the game is a hectic climb where Celica and co. are fighting against their forces, losing hp as you lose time. Alm finally reaches her and this theme plays. It feels you with the swagger of an hitherto unknown heir of a kingdom he hates ready to bust some skulls to save the one he loves. It's one of the best moments in FE for me and this music does a lot to help. fe3 So, I'm going to be a bit biased here and say fe3's ost has some versions of the tracks I prefer. Two of them are the recruitment theme. One is the standard one here which is the standard version. But due to the tone of the story, there's a massively different version that's much more somber and isn't remade in fe12(to my knowledge) sadly. Here it is. it's genuinely incredibly sad to listen to and shows how desperate the situation is or how the characters feel at the time. The Medeus battle theme is also a banger. it's just amazing. Like goddamn. I feel the fe12 version is less version is much less intense. But book 2's version manages to capture the scale, the desperation and the stakes and after a long journey like book 2's? Yes. fe3/fe12 This is where, imo, Archaena truly shines. Theme of Love and SNES theme of love both capture the feeling of complete isolation. Fitting considering it's the theme of Artemis more than any other character. It's her theme. As Marth learns about the legend of Anri, how he chose to take up arms, how he fought valiantly, only to be screwed over by the very people he saved is genuinely heartbreaking. While we never get to know Anri, the tone of the story carries it. Nyna also makes great use of it as she has to say goodbye to the man she loves as well. But the second best user of this track is easily Michalis. The prince who betrayed everything, realizing his betrayal is only paid by kindness by the person whom he used as a bargaining chip, growing a sense of love for family and regret again, is one of the best character arcs in the game. Eternal Bond is another one that hits hard. It plays when the maidens are broken out of their spells by the people they love most. When Julius shows his genuine sincere love for Lena, how Minerva regrets putting Maria in danger, how Merric finall admits his feelings for Elice, it all comes together so beautifully. And adds closure to the characters we all grew to like. Meanwhile, Nyna is heartbroken as Camus has already chosen someone else and so the more somber Theme of Love plays. fe4 Okay this list is getting big lmao. Chapter 4's theme is one that immediately comes to mind. After being branded a traitor, away from his country, Sigurd is embroiled in a war he didn't want to be in, in a land that's strange and it perfectly captures the mood. Also Erinys and Lewyn's lover convo in this theme? Yes. I don't need to explain this one When chapter 6 starts after the crushing defeat of Sigurd, the death of the crusaders, the rise of the Loptyian order...and this theme kicks in it hits different. It uses beats from Sigurd's prologue theme and creates this hopeful atmosphere that just pushes you onwards. fe5 Okay now we get to the game that REALLY makes me go giddy with how the music is used. Leif's theme is probably one of the best utilized pieces of music in the entire series. The song itself is pretty amazing on its own, creating this comforting but uncertain atmosphere of atmosphere. But the way the game uses it is just phenomenal. Chapter after Chapter Leif's army is defeated, suffering losses, escaping, getting captured and god knows what else. Leif loses so many people. And after challenge after challenge, he manages to take over Castle Leonster, his home. The last time he was here, he saw it being burnt down. Now he's here and it's his birthright. And this theme kicks in during the celebration and it's just one of the most satisfying moments. Then in chatper 18, Leif has to defend his castle one last time. Having held off a six-month(!) long siege, he finally receives news Seliph's army is approaching to aid him. And this map plays during this chapter, pushing you on one last time as things finally begin to look up for the poor child! It's just satisfiying. The feeling of joy, sorrow, anguish all comes to a head and it all releases together. The final time it plays before the game's ending is rescuing Eyvel. In one of the most emotional scenes in the series, Eyvel is reunited with her family and it's just...beyond words. I high recommend experiencing Thracia to explain why it's so good. The recruitment theme. The general downward slant of Thracia, the desperation in each battle, the uncertain determination of betraying their army for Leif's, it's all in here. And it affects me to an unnatural extent. There are a LOT more I can say but the whole ost for Thracia is amazing imo. fe6 Beyond the distant skies is a lovecraftian horror in the form of music. It never leaves. Once it has drilled itself into your head, it doesn't leave. It doesnt. God. Help So when it changes, it's possibly the most jarring thing to me. Because the game has trained me to expect the iconic do dododo doo Zephiel's battle theme is also pretty tight. While Zephiel is...a questionable villain. This theme carries him for me. It feels like a climactic showdown fitting a FAR better villian than he is imo. fe9/10 RUN. Lowkey one of the more iconic pieces because Black knight is NOT someone you mess around with. He's a dangerous foe and I'm sure many people have memories of him killing Zihark. Three houses might have three of 'em, the Black Knight only needs one. fe13 Conquest might be one of the best tracks in the series. there's something incredibly sad, relaxing and bittersweet about it. I don't know why it's never used as a map theme because it'd be amazing. But so far it's only used in random encounters. It still doesn't diminish the power of the song. The ablaze version is ALSO very lit. Yeah that's enough gushing from me. Go ahead, spam the comments with whatever music really gets you going! [link] [comments]

My Opinion on Awakening's IMO poor design. (A kinda thing I ended up writing about it.) Posted: 29 Dec 2020 06:15 PM PST Awakening is flat-out backwards designed, almost every thing in it is broken/contradicted by another element, it is from a design perspective, contradictory. Child Units, except they come so late you'd have to seriously delay the main story to get them grinded up or even get all of them at all. (Especially Noire in my experience, for a character who's in a terrible class yet has such a insanely difficult map, just because the enemies have absurd stats.) Stats really matter...except they also don't because stats are hilariously inflated seriously did FE need stats to go into the 40s? so actual 1-2 point level ups are near worthless as you need many of them to make a dent. (which also reduces the value of stat boosters as you effectively need more of them for the same effect in other games.) Instead of using Armour Knights to tank damage, you're using Tharja/Robin, mages, a class generally in FE regarded as squishy in direct combat, with Nosferatu to tank the damage and effectively have infinite health, if anything the stat inflation means Armour Knights kinda suck at their job when they get easily doubled by silver/killer bows late-game enemies who are still going to do a ton of damage regardless. More new classes...except Nosferatu tanking beats all of them, why get a situational war cleric, who can become an effective dread fighter in a desert map when a Nosferatu unit ALSO isn't effected by Sand and is functionally immortal outside of extreme unluckiness?, in general armour knights and archers are completely surpassed by Nosferatu, Kellam is only useful because of his Rally ability for defense/pair up stat bonuses and Thieves are basically redundant since enemies always drop their items. The Main story/side chapters want you to be starved for resources, chasing down thieves for master seals and completing the absurdly difficult optional objectives in paralogues for physic staves and such....except just waiting a day/moving forwards the 3DS clock gives random battles/Anas that render them redundant, why bust my ass chasing down a thief through an army of enemies with absurd stats or rushing to defend a village, when I can just use my literally infinite money to buy one from Ana? (or just you know, Use Tharja with her 45 defensive growth.) Robin's a "Tactician" yet their playstyle and absurd stat growth means they're used more as an elite commando unit (Especially if you reclass them into a Nosferatu capable class) rather than a teamplayer, infact Vaike, a dumb warrior and Kellam, a Knight who people consistently can't see, get skills much earlier than Robin that provide much more effective teamplay capabilities than Robin. (Not to mention Robin's character is all about strategy, in a game which is ironically harder the more you actually try to apply strategy to it and has unfair unstrategic gameplay elements like Ambush spawns or only predictable via extreme trial and error like the pair-up mechanics where your chances can only bee see in the battle forecast, in an enemy phase focused game.) Sure, Robin gets rally spectum but you'll be almost done with the main story potentially by the time you actually unlock that and at that point you've probably made them a Nosferatu Tank. And this is without considering story. (like a game that tries so hard to be set in a previous continuity despite contradicting it constantly.) The game feels like it's fighting itself with how much it contradicts itself, like the design team had no actual design and were just throwing stuff in left and right. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Dec 2020 04:18 PM PST A lot of Edelgard's plans to undermine the Church seemed kind of... dumb. Like hiring violent killers to attack towns and villages? Working with a bunch of shady people who tortured you instead of ratting them out for political favors? I guess she intends to betray them afterwards but I mean they're the ones manipulating her, it's not like they wouldn't be able to figure out her schemes considering they helped her come up with most of hers. A lot of what she says is very vague she fails to demonstrate any kind of plan to actually implement the things she wants. Based on a conversation with Lindhardt she might not really know what shes even talking about. Also does she really need to start a war with everyone to even do the whole no Crest thing? Like couldn't she just do that stuff in the Empire she rules over? I mean shes the sovereign of the land right? [link] [comments]
What new weapons would you like to see in a future Fire Emblem game? Posted: 29 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST This could either be a new class of weapon or a new weapon in general. I'm mostly just asking because I have been thinking of a battle-axe with small rockets attached to the middle to propel it. Go crazy. [link] [comments] |
