    Forced dismounting. Good or bad?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:20 PM PST

Dismounting is a command and gameplay mechanic that revolves around mounted unitsgetting off their mounts and continuing to fight on foot. Dismounting is optional in FE4 and 3 Houses, but in FE3 ,5 and BS:FE mounted units are forced to get off their mounts while indoors.

In FE3 when the Dismount command is selected, the mounted unit is reclassed into a different class, all mounted units besides horsemen reclass into knights while horsemen reclass into hunters and stats are subtracted. Notably Knights are forced to use swords, but this isn't that big of a deal as weapon ranks were based off your weapon level which was a stat in FE3 and it meant that somone like Sirius could still have good combat while dismounted since he can use the silver sword at base. This gave a lot of utility to unmounted units as Knights only had 6 move and no access to waterwalking which meant they were often left in the dust by Mart, your snipers and heroes. Notably the last few maps were all indoor maps.

In FE5 you don't reclass into another class when dismounting, instead all mounted classes have mounted and dismounted versions which share the same name, ensuring that a dismounted paladin, for example, is still a Paladin in name. Also when inflicted with the sleep status mounted units are also forced to dismount and all dismounted classes are forced into using swords, aside from bow knights and troubadours. And now with the modern weapon rank system, being locked to swords was often quite detrimental for a lot of units.

So, should forced dismounting come back? Depends. Some games like FE& would become tiedious with forced dismounting and there might be better ways of nerfing mounts, but at the same time it promotes class diversity and makes you think about which units to train more. I personally wouldn't mind it coming back, but if so please could the final map be outdoors so that alk the characters are fighting at their max potential? What do you think? Be sure to tell me your thoughts in the comments below and thank you for reading.

Which two characters from different FE games would you most like to see interact?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:21 AM PST

A little while back I came up with some "Harmonized Heroes", characters from different games in the series I think would make for an interesting duo. Unfortunately Heroes itself gives very little in the ways of true series crossover opportunities, so it's fun to think about different interactions yourself.

I think some more I'd like to see are Dieck and Erk, Leonie and Ronan, Kris and Yuzu, Mia and Marisa, Misha and Erinys, and Seliph and Lucina (they shared a brief conversation in Awakening's DLC and I'd love to see more).

    Chapter 22

Welcome back to "What If?" Wednesday, the until-recently-weekly thread on speculative gameplay discussion. I may have been gone for a week or so, but now I'm back to bring the questions! Whether you've been celebrating, or having an ordinary month, I hope we can come together over the world of Fire Emblem. So, let's get right back to it!

Stat boosters are a common feature to the Fire Emblem series - although, the names and effects can change from game to game. The Speedwing, for instance, grants +2 to Speed, while the Goddess (or was it Ashera?) Icon grants +2 (or was it +4?) to Luck. A common question, debated among players young and old alike, is - what is the best use of these tools? Do I attempt to boost a unit already strong in one stat to dizzying heights, or do I attempt to "patch up" a unit's weak points? Use it right away, or save it for a later recruit? Or should I forsake the boost, and sell it? Well, let's complicate things further with another option!

What if, when consuming a stat booster, the unit in question had the option to boost their growth rate, rather than the current stat value, in the relevant stat? Assume that the growth boost provided is equal to the original stat boost, times ten, as a percentage. So, let's say I have Edward (Radiant Dawn) use an Energy Drop. He has the option of increasing his Strength stat by 2, or of increasing his Strength growth by 20%. If such an option were available, would you take it up, or would you rather just stick with the standard stat boost? Would this change whom you decide to use your boosters on, or if you choose to sell them - or, not really? Do you like the idea of consumables or equippables that affect unit growths, or would you prefer growths to remain dependent only on character and class?

Let me know what you think below! I will be posting my thoughts soon, but as usual, I want to hear what you all think. And, whether you choose to answer or not, have a good start to the New Year.
