Subtle Tellius worldbuilding that I love

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:38 AM PDT

I love how the different Capitol cities in Tellius reflect the history of their respective nations.

So while Crimea's, Daein's, and Begnion's capitols do admittedly give off the vibes of "good guy country," "bad guy country," and "big empire" respectively, the way that each castle is constructed makes a lot of sense once you consider their histories and cultures, especially in regards to their relationships with the Laguz. Crimea's capitol is a rather plausible looking castle that could be used to hold off a siege, it's also not as impressively designed as Daein's and especially Begnion's with the lack of the tall spires and all that. Now I don't recall if we're explicitly told this in-game, I think it's fairly reasonable to assume that Crimea abolished Laguz slavery well before Daein or Begnion did. Compared to the other two countries, Crimea has a far more amicable relationship than Daein or Begnion has with the Laguz, so I think it's not a stretch to assume that Daein's and Begnion's capitols were constructed mainly by Laguz slaves while Crimea's wasn't. Begnion's capitol is massive. It has dozens of large castles and a huge skyscraper. Assuming that skyscraper wasn't constructed by the goddess, given that she's said to rest in there (I haven't played RD yet so if it comes up in that game pls don't spoil me), there's no way that something like that could be constructed by irl Medieval humans. However, if you have workers that can fly, then a structure like that is suddenly a lot more possible.

Now while the Beorc castles are cool and all, the real reason I'm making this post is the Laguz capitols. Starting with Goldoa's capitol, one thing that immediately becomes clear is that it's fucking massive. Given that those little green specs we see on the bottom of the plateau are most likely trees... yeah that's a really long flight of stairs for people to walk up. If you were a human traveler with an bullock cart, it'd be very hard, if not outright impossible, to carry your luggage up those steps. But you know what? This castle isn't built by humans, it's built by dragons. That long flight of stairs suddenly becomes a non-issue when you could just use your giant dragon wings to fly over the top of it. However, it is still accessible for non-flying species like humans and Beast-Laguz. Goldoa's an ancient kingdom that once ruled over Beorc and non-Dragon Laguz, so it is still possible for these people to get into the capitol, but the castle was very clearly not designed with them in mind.

As for the other 3 Laguz castles, namely Phoenicis', Kilvas', and Gallia's, they're definitely a lot less impressive than some of the others in terms of their size. But that makes a lot of sense. Unlike Goldoa and the Beorc nations, these countries were founded by escaped slaves from Begnion and were created relatively recently. And as such, their biggest priority was probably not getting recaptured by Begnion. Gallia (while we can't see the entire castle) has its capitol in a massive forest and is perched on a mountain. If Beorc armies tried to take them out, not only would they be slowed down by all the trees, they would easily be seen from Gallia's capitol. The beast Laguz would have the natural advantage, as they're able to fight in the trees more easily than the Beorc. As for Kilvas' and Phoenicis' capitols, they're effectively incapable of being seiged by an invading Beorc army. Not only are their countries located on small islands, their capitols are constructed on cliffs, with the only land access being tiny, winding roads. Kilvas' castle is especially well-guarded. The only way a Beorc army could take them out is by going up the cliffside road, which would make themselves vulnerable to the Ravens taking them out by causing an avalanche higher up on the mountain. Additionally, while Kilvas and Phoenicis have pretty small castles as their capitols, you can see windows and doors on the cliffside, so it's likely that both of them have a tunnel system going on. Also, none of the doors are on ground level, so there's no worries of a Begnion invasion getting through.

...that went on a bit longer than I intended.

FE7 Redux Tier List Round 1: Lyn and Sain

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:59 AM PDT

Welcome to Round 1: Lyn and Sain!

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds, providing full analyses for FE7 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

Note: The results from the strawpoll had the both option win so this tier list will be tiering both Lyn mode and non Lyn mode units. So when you vote, vote for both Lyn mode and non Lyn mode Lyn and Lyn mode and non Lyn mode Sain. Do the same for any other unit also in Lyn mode for the rest of this list.

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role.

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your deployment options to fill out your team. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they do work and can become pretty good with investment but do fine without investment. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

Next Round will be Kent and Florina.

    Tellius appreciation part 2.5

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 02:04 PM PDT

    Spoilers again.

This is kind of interlude between what's basically two different games, story wise. From this point on we're an actual army in a pretty straightforward FE plot instead of the more nuanced mercenary work we were doing before, although this second part has its own twists on the formula that are fun to talk about. For now though, I'm going to focus on some characters that I've completely neglected to mention, and elaborate on some points that might've gone by too quick.

First of all, let's talk about the main man himself, Ike. Ike's really interesting, considering his limited view on world politics, and somehow relegates him to a self insert like shudder Byleth. He has very personal convictions to his family, Greil, Mist, and the Greil Mercenaries in general. He's hotheaded to start and that never fully goes away, but he always develops a cool head for strategy, not as much as Soren obviously, but enough to be a competent commander. His most prominent trait, however, would probably be his constant bluntness to enemy and ally alike. It's a blessing that Ike has unique dialogue for every boss he can fight because almost all of them are absolute gems, and the way he handles people like Makalov, Ranulf, Soren, Boyd, and pretty much any other character can lead to some hilarious scenarios. But Ike is a lot more than a blunt battle-fueled monster, and his ideals concerning the beorc and laguz gap are some of the most thought provoking lines of dialogue in the games. Ike's shining moment in this first half of PoR has to be his utter beat down to Sanaki and the senators after he finds out they knew Elincia was the princess and only lied to them for amusement. While it's justified for the senators, and slightly justified to Sanaki, it goes to show that Ike doesn't care who he's talking to, he'll spit the facts to them with no care for the consequences. Obviously that's not the smartest way to live, and it's nice that he's properly reprimanded for his actions afterwards by his basically mother-in-law Titania and Soren. All in all, I couldn't imagine a better protagonist for this game then what we got with Ike, and he only gets better from here.

Next, we have who's basically our deuteragonist for these games, Elincia. I know I said Jill was my favorite character in the series, and that still stands true, but Elincia is right on her heels for top spot. To be fair, she doesn't make much of an impression in this game until we close in on the Begnion arc with the amazing line, "Give them a sound thrashing!" At that point, I was already beginning to like her, and her entire outlook on ruling and nations starting out so naive and childish makes perfect sense, considering her upbringing. I also understand why she's so gloomy and demure for the first half of the game considering both her parents, her uncle (presumably) and her nation have all been lost. Not only that, her most trusted allies Geoffrey, Lucia, and Bastian are all gone, presumed dead, and she's forced to travel the continent with a group she's never met for a position she doesn't think she's qualified to have. It's all really tragic, and it only really pays off come Radiant Dawn, but she still establishes her willingness to get into battle way back when crossing into Crimea, but she's forced to hold off until pretty much endgame which is really sad. We'll get more into Elincia later when her arc finishes up, but I just wanted to make sure I mention her here.

Meanwhile, let's look at some less important characters, starting with Marcia! Thanks to the person who commented about who I would get rid of and mentioning Makalov since that made me realize I completely skipped over Marcia in my last two post which is tragic because I think everyone can agree Marcia is amazing. I know that most of her... interesting expressing are due to the localization, but I don't even care because she's hysterical. Her total irritation with her brother is honestly way too relatable to me, and I think she's actually pretty similar to Ike in the way that she'll tell it straight when she thinks she has to. Meanwhile, I also skipped over Devdan, but he won't get any more screen time in Radiant Dawn, so I guess I should mention him here. It's really weird that he's the only playable character in Path of Radiance to not even show up in Radiant Dawn, but what are you going to do?

Anyway, that's the end of this mini-update. We'll get to the main story again tomorrow. Thanks for reading!
