    Thoughts on letting characters die vs resetting from a resetter who just completed an iron man run.

    As said in the title, I am a player who has, for every single Fire Emblem game, always reset in the case of a character death. I've played through the games multiple times doing this, including Conquest a total of five times on Lunatic (I'm insane, I know). Something that has always been a frustration among the fan base for me was the argument between my preferred style, the whole resetting thing, and allowing for permadeath, and especially the claim that resetting makes permadeath meaningless. So, after fully committing to the opposite of what I enjoy in attempting an Iron Man of FE6, I wanted to write out everything I have learned and my opinions on the whole matter.

    One of my favorite things about Fire Emblem games is really, really, getting to know the specific mechanics of a game. I love replaying and learning that I've memorized reinforcement patterns, figured out some of the AI, created basic strategies for certain levels, and understand how to mess around with the quirks of a game's mechanics. This is why I've completed Conquest so many times - it's incredibly fun for me to screw around with a game I get more comfortable with each time I play, and gratifying to finish things with more ease each playthrough despite weird experimentations and unit mixes.

    This is where I want to talk about why I've always been a resetter. The way I approached difficult levels is with the idea in mind that a character death is a loss, regardless of who it is. With this idea, levels start to become puzzles; how can I get through this without losing a unit? It forces me to plan ahead, figure out how to deal with sections of a level consistently, and have back-up plans for when an unlucky miss or crit rears its ugly face. In order to pull this off, I really have to do what I love doing - learn the game well. I need to figure out the quirks of a game, how reinforcements are triggered, and general strategies in order to find the solution to my self-imposed puzzle.

    Before I get to my Iron Man, I want to quickly talk about the whole idea that permadeath means nothing to resetters.

    So, I only truly became a Fire Emblem in the wake of Three Houses, going on to play all the games after completing it, but I picked up SoV back when it first came out, seeing it on display and thinking it looked interesting. Being completely blind to FE and how to play the game, I played it on casual. My mindset was similar to now; don't let a unit die. But because I was so absolutely awful at the games back then, I cracked eventually and let someone die, knowing they'd be okay. And I cracked some more, after that first time, because doing it once made it less "taboo" than before. When I picked up There Houses, I was equally as crap at the game, having only played SoV once, but decided to play on classic. This forced me to get good, learn how to play with more forethought and how to come up with decent in-the-moment strategies when things go awry, all because now the temptation to crack was pretty much gone. And so, learned to love the gameplay. Permadeath was absolutely necessary, despite the fact that I reset, and only became more important as I lost the ability to turn back time as I worked my way through older games.

    Now, the Iron Man.

    I had a blast.

    I had to understand the game in order to make progress just as I do with resetting, especially since my attachment to characters gave me extra incentive to really try and make things work out. The way the whole learning curve worked out, though was completely different.

    In my normal playthroughs, I would make levels puzzles, where I would intimately learn what exactly my specific set of units were capable of in the chapter, sometimes trying out wild things to see if it worked better in the long run. The puzzle in the Iron Man was figuring it out with not nearly as much information, and whenever I failed to keep someone alive (which certainly happened, as I don't know 6 overly well) things would change drastically on the fly. I would lose weapons, I would lose rescue utility, I would love healing utility, I would lose support utility, and more. It forced considerations and strategies I never had to deal with before.

    And of course, there was the pain of losing characters. (My heart ached when I lost Clarine to some unexpected reinforcements early on... Like, Klein's worried about her and she's going to be dead by the time I recruit him). That kind of emotional stuff is also pretty fun.

    So, yeah. I'm happy to say that I definitely see the merit of both sides. I still prefer playing with resetting, but I have plans for more Iron Mans in the future, and when I someday get around to a H5 run of FE12, I'll more easily consider letting units stay dead if it worked out for the better in a level. And for anyone that read all the way through my ramblings, thanks, and I'm curious what you think.
