Reasons why Lorenz is the best: Catherine Support

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:12 PM PST

I thought it was pretty dope that Lorenz fought Catherine, the best swordfighter in the game, to a draw in a (relic unassisted) swordfight. Lorenz probably talks the most shit about nobility and such but he's always ready to back it up.

    Don't sleep on Windsweep!

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:42 PM PST

Bit of a foreword, this will mainly be an analysis on Windsweep on Maddening difficulty specifically.

Windsweep's a bit of an unusual combat art in Three Houses. It negates enemy counterattacks at 1-range but, being a combat art, can only hit once. Its might boost is also a fair bit lower than other staple combat arts. But I think what really makes it seem undesirable is the plethora of ways to avoid counterattacks in Three Houses; bows can get 3-5 range, easily outranging most enemies, while gambits also negate counterattacks while also immobilizing enemies after the fact. Both options are also generally more accessible; increased bow range can be acquired by just going Archer/Sniper/Bow Knight, and anyone can use a gambit, while Windsweep is only learned by 3 units:

    • Byleth
    • Dimitri
    • Jeritza

and even then, only at A rank in swords. So things aren't looking great for our sword art here.

    ...or are they?

Windsweep has an interesting niche that neither gambits nor attack range can quite handle: the combo of Commander and Counterattack. Commander reduces the damage taken from gambits by a whopping 75%, while Counterattack lets you counter at any range—even against Meteor and Bolting! What's more, this specific ability combo is held by quite a few of the game's nastier bosses; on Maddening mode the combo is especially dangerous, since bosses with it also tend to be offensive powerhouses that are unsafe to initiate against otherwise. The bosses that have this combo, are:

    • Edelgard (massive Atk, can act multiple times per turn with Raging Storm)
    • Dimitri (massive Atk and absurd AS making him exceedingly difficult to not get doubled by)
    • Death Knight (this kinda goes without saying)
    • Nemesis (has sky-high defenses on top of massive Atk and similar AS to Dimitri)
    • Rhea (not quite as nuclear in damage, but is still dangerous and will also constantly heal herself with the Sword of Seiros)

You can see where the problem arises here: it's not safe to initiate against them, cause you'll likely die. You can't outrange them because they'll counter you anyways. Gambits can help quite a bit here, but they're a limited resource that you might need to deal with tougher squads like Falcon Knights, and again, their damage is heavily reduced by Commander.

This is where Windsweep comes in. Windsweep maintains the anti-counterattack trait that gambits have, but doesn't have the weakness of getting its damage reduced by Commander. What's more, although it's only learned by three units, one of them (Byleth) is available for you for the entire game, has a relatively easy time getting it, and has pretty solid enough Strength to make it do solid damage with each hit. It can also take advantage of certain swords' special properties:

    • The Rapier can deal bonus damage against the Death Knight, and when forged, also has a high crit rate (20) which is boosted further by Windsweep (+10)
    • The Levin Sword hits enemy Resistance instead of Defense, making it potentially deal more damage against Dimitri, who has considerably more Def than Res
    • The Cursed Ashiya Sword has an obscene crit rate (40 unforged, 50 forged) which is also boosted by Windsweep, while also having pretty solid Mt for a sword (13 unforged, 14 forged)

so Windsweep combined with certain swords can provide some very strong, safe chip damage against these particular bosses. For similar reasons, it can also be useful against certain monster bosses, mainly the Immovable since it can bypass his latent Quick Riposte.

Bottom line, don't sleep on Windsweep. It can be a helpful tool against some of Maddening's toughest enemies.
