Super low quality art of some smol Byleths! It’s kind of rushed, so it’s kind of bad.

Another round of screenshots from my WIP FE6 Dieck’s Story hack! I’m having a lot of fun putting together a story with my favorite FE6 characters and I hope with all the time I have in quarantine that I’ll be able to make a playable version for everyone.

    Silque - The Unconventional Cleric

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:07 PM PDT

Silque's one of my favourite characters in SoV, a game that has one of my favourite casts in the series. Like with Wrys, Silque is your first healer and doesn't get many chances to speak throughout the game. But there's enough there to make her a pretty interesting character in my eyes.

For starters, unlike most of Mila's clerics, Silque has lived far from a sheltered life. When she was younger she went on a long pilgrimage through Rigel into Zofia. This resulted in her being quite adept at outdoor living. She mentions being able to read the weather by looking at the sky, and she knows which plants are safe to eat. But going back to that Rigelian pilgrimage for a moment, she reveals that her mother was a member of the Duma Faithful, and that she doesn't know anything about her father. This is interesting for a couple reasons. So not only is Silque a Rigelian who now worships Mila, but her mother was actually working with the very people she now opposes. It makes me wonder what caused her mother to bring her to Zofia, to a priory of all places, and why she had to leave. One conclusion that makes sense for her vanishing is if the Duma Faithful was hunting her for fleeing, which makes her story quite tragic. And what about her father? Was he part of the Faithful as well? Was the reason Silque had to flee with her mother because Silque's mother saw Silque's father as a threat? Maybe he was planning on turning her into a witch like Marla and Hestia. There's so many possibilities there, and it makes Silque one of the most interesting characters in terms of backstory for me.

Another reason Silque comes across as a bit more than just your generic cleric is her personality. She's got a bit of sass to her at points, and a sense of humour, which is pretty amusing.

But too much of a good thing can grow just a wee bit tiresome… Some of us began to wonder if we might start growing scales. Hee hee.

Silque: I would hate to disappoint. May Mila's blessing shine extra bright upon Jesse's path. He sorely needs it…

    Jesse: Hmm? What'd you say?

Silque: Oh, nothing. Nothing at all.

She's a bit of a gossip too, as seen in her support with Faye, which doesn't seem very befitting of a cleric. These aspects of her that make her so unconventional as a cleric of Mila is why I'm such a fan though.

Of course, she has a killer design as well. I'm a big fan of her hair in particular, and it's cool when you reclass her and she doesn't wear the same hairpiece she does in her default class line. I have to share my Skogul Silque from my last run, which was just absolutely ridiculously fun to use. I mean look at her take down Berkut. It's a beautiful sight to behold.

A list of something good and something bad from every FE I've played.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:09 PM PDT

What is says on the tin. I Only talking about games I've played through to completion so far. Extremely non-objective, obviously.

    FE4Good:

    • Epic scope, very compelling and tragic characters.
    • Most emotional I've ever felt playing a FE game.

    Bad:

    • Map size is just a bit on the big side.
    • Severe unit imbalances (Holy Blood, Mounted vs not)

    FE5Good:

    • Bold experimentation.
    • I think everyone who's played this has at least one mechanic they wish was continued forwards. For me, it's almost every Thracia mechanic. (Fatigue, Capture, Dismount are the three standouts.)

    Bad:

    • Made every other game pale in comparison
    • Everyone has at least Thracia mechanic they really do not like. For me, it's the infinite staff range. I'd also like to see offensive staves accuracy drop a fair amount (but retain not using a use on misses), with target magic factoring in, to make staff battles feel more "battle-like" instead of every late game turn 1 starting with a complete blow-out one way or another of staff uses. It would make LTC less reliable, but greatly improve casual play imo.
    • Avoid bonus stacking is a bit too strong w/ Supports + Charm.
    • Movement stars.

    FE6Good:

    • Solid implementation of a simpler but fun combat system.
    • If Thracia's boon is it's weirdness, then FE6's is it's consistency. One map end goal, but varied map design means you still have to play each map differently.
    • Side objectives have very forgiving timers (as is the tactics rank), to accommodate players who aren't looking for supreme optimization of their play but still want a challenge beyond just routing every map and then killing the boss.
    • Probably the most satisfying hard mode I've played in FE.

    Bad:

    • Gaiden chapters. Not their existence, but the terrible unfun gimmicks of them. There's not a single good Gaiden chapter in this whole game imo.

    FE7Good:

    • Challenging S rank requirements give good replay-ability.

    Bad:

    • Difficulty falls off as the game goes on, even on hard mode enemies are just too weak to pose a threat.
    • Story focuses on character drama over interesting plotting, screws with the existing elibe canon and has dumb asspulls (Ninian death and reviving).
    • Nurgle is not an interesting villain. I don't even remember what he was trying to accomplish.
    • Introduced rout maps to the series.

    FE8Good:

    • Got me into Fire Emblem many moons ago.
    • Lyon was a very compelling and tragic villain to middle school me.

    Bad:

    • Generic JRPG storyline.
    • Brought back grinding to Fire Emblem.

FE9Good: Bonus Experience and Base Convos.

    Bad:

    • Everytime the black knight appears on screen the story takes a sharp turn towards comically-stupidtown.
    • Siege tome hell on Maniac mode, kind of a snorefest on every other diifficulty.

    FE10Good:

    • Very fun Act 1.
    • Interesting to see conflicts from multiple perspectives.

    Bad:

    • Very contrived reasons for the act 3 war.
    • Regular Laguz are somehow even worse than in PoR.
    • Royal Laguz completely break the tower over their knee and undercut the players attempt to build a team for endgame up until this point by just being better in every way.

    FE11

    Good:

    • It's FE1 but you can see movement tiles now. Hallelujah.
    • Maps hold up surprisingly well for their age.

    Bad:

    • Ambush spawn cavaliers from the middle of the map with effective weaponry. Still salty from an old ironman.
    • Late joining units are complete garbage. (Basically anyone after the whitewings who's not a unique class).
    • Reclass system is super uninteresting because of class imbalance.
    • I've been spoiled by the rescue command and playing a game without it is hell now.

    FE13

    • Saved the franchise? To be honest I was so disappointed by this one when it came out that I'm personally struggling to remember any positive feelings I had for it. Walhart was fun?
    • In the spirit of fairness, I'm not going to rail on the issues I feel it had either. If you liked it, you do you, but this one was not for me for a variety of reasons.

    FE14 (Conquest only)

    Good:

    • Took grinding out of fire emblem.
    • Some of the gimmick maps were fun, which I didn't think was possible in fire emblem.
    • Varied map types and objectives.

    Bad:

    • Grinding still sort of exists (MyCastle battles still give support points, as well as a reroll of MyCastle free items).
    • Everything to do with MyCastle was pretty terrible actually.
    • Extreme stat cap inflation
    • Some units are ridiculously powerful, the vast majority are completely useless.
    • Very static maps. Enemies don't move unless you're in range. Zero timed reinforcements to keep you moving forward, only a few maps have timers on them at all.
    • No weapon durability / infinite use forges.
    • Almost every map is rout in disguise.
    • Pair up went from brokenly strong in awakening to mandatory to survive enemy phase in Conquest (because of enemy offensive stance). I don't see this as an improvement really. They did what they could with a bad system, but rescue was already strong when it took stats away, so any time it gives stats is going to make it ridiculous and favors juggernauting far too much.

    FE15

    Good:

    • Amazing visual and audio presentation.
    • I never would have touched OG gaiden, so it was fun to experience the story this way.

    Bad:

    • Brought grinding back to Fire Emblem again.
    • Uninspiring gameplay.
    • Boring as hell map design.
    • Every map is rout.
    • Milla's Turnwheel feels like a band-aid for bad design.

Haven't played three houses, probably going to give it a pass since I don't think I'd like it.

Feel free to give me shit in the comments.
