Shadows of Valentia Discussion Series - Saber: Driven Mercenary

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:36 PM PDT

    Today, we are discussing Saber.

Saber is a playable character in Shadows of Valentia.

Before the events of the game, Saber was an elite solider in the Rigellian Army. However, he fell into a trap devised by noblemen who scorned his common upbringing, and he lost one of his eyes. Due to being betrayed by a close friend, e challenged them to a duel and emerged victorious. However, his opponent died and because private duels carry the death penalty in the Rigelian army, he was forced to flee to Zofia and become a mercenary.

When in a tavern at Novis Greatport, he agrees to assist Celica. Ever since his employment, Saber more or less acts as Celica's advisor, albeit an unconventional one. Arriving at Zofia Castle, he points out that she does not seem as impressed as Mae and Boey. After Celica accepts her heritage, Saber swears fealty to her and becomes just as loyal as Mae and Boey. When Celica announces her intention to invade Rigel to retrieve Mila, Saber assures her that he has her back. At Duma's temple, he leads Celica's army in an attempt to rescue her.

After the war, Jesse asked for his co-operation after recognizing his abilities. Together, the two faced the challenges of creating a mercenary nation head on, while he marries an unknown woman.

    Saber is supported by:

I made a list of how many times Lost in Thoughts All Alone appears in Fates' soundtrack

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:43 PM PDT

Everyone who's played Fates knows that the melody of its main theme, Lost in Thoughts All Alone is heard throughout the soundtrack, being sneakily (or not so sneakily) inserted into several of the game's music tracks. I started to wonder just exactly how many tracks is the melody heard in, so I listened to the soundtrack and made a list of what I heard. The only tracks not listed here are Lost in Thoughts All Alone itself (and Shigure's version) since the point of this list is to find instances of it in other music tracks, and the tracks ripped straight from other games, which are the amiibo battle themes, Conquest and Conquest (Ablaze), New Heights (Which is actually Bearer of Hope from Radiant Dawn), and Anna's theme from Awakening, because it's obvious without even listening to them that they wouldn't have the melody appear in them. Every other track I have listed. I also took the "calm" and "storm" versions of the map music and combined them since they're basically the same music track anyway aside from Glory/Ruin, but I will point out any differences between the two versions if they are there.

One thing to note about this list is that the two tracks that are labelled as Maybe? are tracks where I am unsure if I actually heard the melody to Lost in Thoughts All Alone in them at the given timestamps, and the ones labelled as Yes* are ones where I am pretty sure I heard it in there but there's a small bit of doubt in my mind about them.

If we count the different versions of certain tracks like the map music separately, we have 141 tracks in total on this list. Assuming the ones labelled as Maybe? do actually contain a snippet of the song, then when we count them up, there are a total of 83 music tracks that that feature the Song Lost in Thoughts All Alone, either as just a little snippet of the melody or as a prominent role in the track. That would mean in around 59% of the game's music (not counting the ones I excluded from the list), you can hear the song (It's around 56% if we include the tracks I excluded from the list). I'm surprised by the percentage though, because I thought it would be somewhere around 70%, but it's actually around between 55%-60%.

    Do you remember? The 21st...

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:41 AM PDT

...chapter of Fire Emblem? It's been a while, two years at most, so maybe not. Time flies when you're stuck at home!

FE1: Clash in Macedon: the one where I found out Ballisticians were pretty okay

FE3 Book 2: The Wyvern's Dale: the one with Starlight

FE4: did not go up to 21, but the 21st castle you can capture is Rivough in Chapter 6 if I did my math right. Did you pick Johan/Iuchar or Johalva/Iucharba?

FE5: The Liberation Wars: the one with Seliph and Diarmuid and right before the one with Reinhardt, I guess. If you go by the gaidens you definitely got, it's the route split.

FE6: The one with Murdock. I went south and got past a bunch of the wyvern riders by flying Zeiss in and having them circle around him for a while.

FE7: The one with Eubans in Eliwood Mode or the one in Badon at night in Hector Mode. Please note that there are cloudy days in FE7.

FE8: Endgame. I got around to this between the first and second iterations of this thread

FE9: The one with Tauroneo. I remember it taking longer than it should have, probably because I sent a sword-locked unit after the 1-2 ranged reinforcements

FE10: The one where mounted units are incapable of reaching the end of the level. I was not very happy about that

FE11: Including the prologue and gaidens, it's the one where you can't win against Gharnef (in the desert, not to be confused with the one where you can)

FE12: Including the prologue and gaidens, it's the one with Horace and Legion (10x). Would you believe I only made it 5 parts past that in the last year, ha ha ha

FE13: The one in Plegia Castle, with all the Mire sorcerers

BR: The one in Demon's Falls with lots of rocks, apparently. I think this might be the only FE game after FE3 that I haven't played

CQ: The stairs. I have many things to say about the stairs but they're very spoiler-y and not very nice.

Rev: The one with the promote/demote tiles and Dragon Veins.

Echoes: Ba de yade yade ya Going by the displayed battles in the ending (including the necrodragon) there are 15 battles in Acts 1 and 2, so the 21st "chapter" is in Act 3 where you can do things in any order you want.

Three Houses: BE doesn't have one Church is Endgame, BL is the one where you attack Enbarr, GD is the Area 51 raid. Fun fact: The Japanese name for Three Houses is Wind Flower Snow Moon, which probably has nothing to do with Earth, Wind, and Fire

[FE4 Character Discussion] Examining the Crusaders #27.5 - Muirne, Optimistic Cleric

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:36 AM PDT

Welcome back to a shorter episode of Examining the Crusaders. Today is a follow-up to yesterday's essay on Lana as we will be discussing her substitute, Muirne, Optimistic Cleric. Muirne is a commoner who is an orphan; she is the younger sister of Deimne. Like Lana she initially is told by Seliph to stay home at the beginning of the game but refuses to as she does not want to sit back while the Empire is putting others in danger. We pick up at her first unique conversation which is her conversation with her brother.

    ------

Chapter 6 conversation with Deimne: Deimne appears and is shocked that Muirne is fighting; she tells him that she could not bear to leave Seliph out on the battlefield alone. Deimne says to himself that he isn't surprised, but Muirne hears this and asks what he means by that. Deimne after that tells Muirne not to get too "invested" in Seliph as he is a prince and thus common peasants like them normally shouldn't be around him; he doesn't want to see her feelings hurt. Muirne rebukes him for getting the wrong idea as she claims that all she wants to do is make sure Seliph survives the war. Deimne just says that he's concerned for Muirne; Muirne thanks him for that.

In Lana's episode, we know that Lana has some sort of feelings for Seliph but it's not obvious until later on in the game. Here, Muirne having feelings for Seliph is more obvious or at the very least is suspected by Deimne (and who else would know Muirne better than her own brother?). He cautions her not to pursue Seliph because of their difference in standing; to Deimne (and probably to most other people), any relationship potential between a peasant orphan and the literal heir to Grannvale would be doomed to fizzle out. But Muirne seems a little bit offended when Deimne tells her this, either because she is in denial of having feelings for Seliph or because she doesn't want Deimne to know; she would rather just be "helping out" Seliph rather than setting lofty expectations up for herself.

    ------

Chapter 8 conversation with Seliph: Muirne calls out to Seliph, and Seliph asks her if something is the matter. She confesses to Seliph that while she was at first excited when they left Tirnanog, she's now scared that one of them will die soon. Given that Ishtar was whisked away just as she was defeated, she fears that some kind of evil force is at work. Seliph on his side confesses that he, too, is scared despite what he has appeared on the outside. He has been kept up at night in fear of what may come and at times even wishes to leave Jugdral. But he resolves to not do this: the people are waiting on him - on them - to liberate them from the horrors of imperial rule. Muirne apologizes for making him worry and promises to give the cause all she can, but she asks Seliph to be careful as she wouldn't know what to do without him. Seliph asks Muirne to be careful as well for the same reason.

Here is Muirne's secret event with Seliph and this is one of the most emotional moments for Seliph in the entire game. But first we'll concentrate on what this conversation does for Muirne. Muirne is scared of what's going on around them; she senses that there is a greater, dark force that is orchestrating the events of the war and opens up to Seliph about her fear. After Seliph opens up to her about his fears, she begs him to be careful as she doesn't know what she would do without him - what they would do without him. And she's able to get Seliph to reciprocate those feelings, too...a strong relationship for what Deimne deemed to be implausible to happen.

    ------

Endgame conversation with Asaello: Muirne asks Asaello if he is doing alright; knowing how frustrated he is, she asks him not to do anything rash. Asaello exclaims that he wishes he had some holy blood since he is being overwhelmed by everything. Muirne shares his feelings but tells him that holy blood isn't the answer to everything. While they don't have the holy blood, they've been able to make it this far with their own determination and hard work. Asaello continues to complain about being surrounded by lords who have everything made out for them in life while life is unfair for them. Muirne tells Asaello to cheer up as an orphanage is waiting for him to return; Asaello says that she's right as things can't be that bad with Muirne by his side.

This is an interesting conversation as it is one of several that lampshades the lack of holy blood for the substitute characters. Asaello wishes that he had holy blood so he could be just as good as the many nobles in Seliph's army; his pessimism is contrasted with the optimism of his lover Muirne. Muirne brings up the upshot: in spite of the fact that they lack holy blood, they still were able to make it this far with just their determination, and that alone gives them worth. She chooses to look at things in a positive light and continue persevering rather than dwell on the negative like her lover Asaello.

    ------

Ending: Muirne by default returns to Isaach along with her brother. When she tells Seliph this, Seliph seems to want to say something...which may indicate that again, Seliph (somehow) has feelings towards her of some kind.

    ------

Final thoughts: Muirne has only three unique conversations, but all of them bring new things to the table that fleshes out the story. In the first conversation, we see her having to face the fact that she, a peasant orphan, probably has no chance to woo Grannvale's prince Seliph. In Chapter 8, she reveals to her love (Seliph) her fears of seeing one of their friends dying to the dark forces that are orchestrating what is happening across Jugdral. And in the final chapter, she has to face the fact that she (and her now-lover Asaello) lack holy blood. But in all three situations, Muirne tries to be optimistic; she doesn't back down but she keeps pushing. She resolves in the C6 conversation to continue fighting against the Empire, she resolves in the C8 conversation to continue helping Seliph as they need each other, she resolves in the endgame conversation to continue the determination and hard work that brought her and the other substitutes this far. This is what makes Muirne unique and different.

Thanks for reading this episode. Next time we will look at Diarmuid, Charming Knight and his substitute Tristan. See you then.
