Minor spoiler for FE3H, but spoiler nonetheless. I decided to make king Dedegard, and I think it came out pretty good, I did it as Byleth and king dedede are my most played characters in smash. I think I will do bandanamitri next

FE7 Reliable Stats Efficiency with Expected Turncount metric - LHM Kent% in 49~ Turns

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 12:30 PM PDT

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk2FMu8uSAs&list=PLzHc9vjq1MicDyt1rGpaLhdyIfmMGpxHQ&index=14

Updated from the Sain one I put out earlier with Kent % version.

The total expected turncount for Lyn Hard Mode with Kent as your primary Paladin is is 49~ (50 if you add in the extra turn the game counts on defend maps).

Kent costs about 3.5 turns compared to Sain as a result. Most of the turnloss was in Chapter 3 (can't be 3 turned with Kent as a primary EXP candidate), and Chapter 10 (can't be 3 turned by Kent unless he crits or somehow has 14 str like Sain), along with moderate "leaks" of turns here and there thanks to his bad luck and inability to finish off enemies in less attacks requiring extra hits from other characters. Kent's reduced strength actually reduces reliability the most out of anything else, and his skill increase does not make up for it. His higher speed barely mattered at all because he needed to also have better strength to 2HKO properly even whilst doubling, which starts to get into borderline 50%~ areas of stat reliability. It seems unlikely Kent can eke back 3 turns in HHM considering that Marcus does so much of the heavy lifting, and Sain's speed is pretty sufficient on the whole.

In the future I'll be taking the Sain file to HHM and doing an ETC run of FE7 as a whole.

As a comparative note, here are the Cav's averages and 90% individual binomial stats (note that collectively having a unit where all stats are this bad is very unlikely). You can see how Sain's better growth and base distribution makes him compare better to his average stats due to lower variance in key areas, wheras Kent's middling growths with typical 5% increases that are meant to make up for lower bases hurt him quite a bit more.

    Averages at 12/3 Sain 31.40 16.8 9.55 12.20 8.55 10.60 3.60 Kent 33.05 12.2 13.5 13.85 4.60 10.25 5.25 90% Individual Binomials at 12/3 Sain 29 15 07 10 6 9 2 Kent 31 10 11 12 3 8 3

If you find this sort of thing interesting, I run a discord dedicated to LTC and Efficiency strategies in Fire Emblem. If you would like to join, feel free to send me a PM and I'll send you an invite.

"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 12: Ow, the (Wind) Edge

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 06:25 PM PDT

    Chapter 11

Welcome back, one and all, to "What If?" Wednesday, the thread where we consider hypothetical gameplay scenarios in the Fire Emblem series. Today, we're on the edge of something great, an extraordinary possibility, even. What is it? Well, it's just what I said it was - an Edge.

In the Fire Emblem series, no weapon type is more iconic than the sword. It is the chosen weapon type of most main characters, it appears in plenty among enemy and playable units alike, and a legendary one often plays a pivotal role in the story. Yet for all its significance, one type of sword is elusive - the ranged sword. Sure, a game like Sacred Stones will have the Wind Sword and the Runesword - but such weapons are rare, not easily obtained, and deal magical damage rather than physical. In short, most games in the series do not feature a clear analogue to the Javelin or Hand Axe - that is, a widely-accessible physical sword with 1~2 range.

Radiant Dawn does things differently, introducing a widely-accessible ranged sword that deals physical damage - the Wind Edge. At long last, Dawn Brigadeers such as Edward and Zihark (or, for the daring, Meg) have an option to attack foes at 2 range. And while Fates generally nerfed the Javelin and Hand Axe, it did introduce a Sword (Katana, technically) counterpart to these weapons, in the Kodachi. But what if that change were not so limited? What if other games in the series included a 1~2 range Sword that does physical damage, with roughly the same power, presence, and accessibility as the Javelin and Hand Axe?

Rather than impose a uniform set of stats, I would suggest "pegging" the Wind Edge to the Javelin (owing to different stat systems between games) - suppose, in any game in which the Javelin appears, the Wind Edge does as well, with equal uses, 1 less Mt, 5 less Hit, 1 less Wt, and the same weapon rank. Stores that sell the Javelin, now sell the Wind Edge as well, at a cost of 100 gold more. The Wind Edge may show up on enemies, too, at roughly the same incidence as the Javelin (as a proportion of all Sword users). How would these changes affect unit and class balance? Which games would Wind Edges do really well in, and in which would they struggle to be relevant? Moreover, do you prefer having a Wind Edge (or Kodachi)-type Sword counterpart to Javelins and Hand Axes, or does such an option make the weapon types feel too similar?

In any case, thanks for reading. I look forward to your answers. And if you wish to pose your own question, feel free to do so. I'll be sharing my own thoughts down below shortly.

Just finished Verdant Wind! So...what just happened???

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 08:57 AM PDT

This was my first run of Tree Houses. I was enjoying the story a lot right up until a few chapters from the end, and now I feel really weird about the whole thing. Just wanted to get some thoughts out and see what y'all think.

    * Rhea is super suspicious the whole time, but the story seems to really back you into a corner supporting her no questions asked. This felt really weird. For most of the game, especially through conversations with Claude, she seems creepy and up-to-no-good. This "turn", if it was supposed to be a turn, felt disjointed to me.

    * In the end cards (for me), Claude doesn't end up ruling a united Fodlan, instead, Byleth does? This didn't seem to fit at all. There's no hint that Byleth plans to rule Fodlan, or that Claude passes him the reins. There's one occasion where you can say "I should rule" but in that case I said that Claude should. This isn't bad per-se, but it definitely came out of left field.

    * Dimitri essentially dying off camera felt like a real missed opportunity, especially when Dedue shows up in the fight against Edelgard but gets no conclusion to his story and doesn't feature in post-battle dialogue at all. It was just weird that Dimitri was presumed dead, then shows up for one meaningless battle, then dies off camera. Just why? Leave him dead from the beginning; this felt like a bait-and-switch to me. Oh look Dimitri is actually alive this will be fun lol nope never mind.

    * A consistent antagonist would have made for a more engaging story IMO. Edelgard is the flame emperor! No wait actually Thorn is the Big Bad. No wait actually Nemesis is the big bad. Continuing to up the ante with bigger bads cheapens the conflict before, and makes them feel like a waste. It takes the wind out of the sails of the whole story, and felt really disappointing to me.
The way the story kind of came apart at the seams towards the end is making me hesitant to come back to the game and run another route. If these things rubbed me the wrong way, what route do y'all think I should do next? Is this just how the game goes about its storytelling or does Verdant Wind get short shrift here?

What are your thoughts on the Black Knight in Radiant Dawn

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 09:53 AM PDT

Obvious spoilers ahead but I find myself a little torn on how this returning villain was executed as a whole and I'm curious what people in general think of him. Specifically in the context of RD but if you wanna talk about him in PoR go for it.
