Psi Yoshi’s Official Tokyo Mirage Sessions Recommendation

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 12:32 PM PST

Over the years I've answered the question "Should I play Tokyo Mirage Sessions?" a lot. Sometimes it's directed to nobody in particular, other times people come to me specifically for my recommendation. That's why today I present you with: "Psi Yoshi's Official Tokyo Mirage Sessions Recommendation" so I have something to point to next time the question gets asked. Gonna try and keep this as brief as possible, because who wants to read an essay on a game they've never played before? That means this isn't an exhaustive list of reasons of why I think the game is great, just what I think the highlights are that make the game worth checking out.

    What is TMS?

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE is a turned-based JRPG, a crossover between the Shin Megami Tensei series and Fire Emblem. It features gameplay very similar to the SMT series, with a lot of enemies, weapons, characters, and certain battle features from Fire Emblem. It's set in modern-day Tokyo and you play as a group of high school and university-aged folks in the entertainment industry. There's a lot of emphasis on performance. Everything from the character arcs to the battle scenes are based around the performing arts. If J-Pop is a complete and utter turn off for you, you might not enjoy the game. That said, I went into the game with zero prior experience with J-Pop, SMT, or even anime really, and it became one of my favourite games. The game is approximately 50-60 hours depending on your skill level. This will be lengthened greatly if you try and get all the achievements, including playing NG+ for the added Lunatic difficulty and other various NG+ changes. Basically, if you love turn-based JRPGs, Tokyo Mirage Sessions is probably worth checking out, however, if you're looking for more in-depth information, please keep reading!

    Why should you play it?

    Battles

Let's start with the battle system. It's engaging right from the get-go, and it never stops adding new things even all the way up until the very end of the game. This keeps things fresh and engaging throughout the entire experience. Whether it's totally new techniques such as Duo Arts, which are special attacks that can change the flow of battle, or simply learning new skills through gaining experience, your strategies will be constantly evolving with your new tools. Even as you approach the final boss you'll still find yourself gaining access to powerful new skills. In battle 1 you're understanding "Okay if Itsuki attacks with lighting then Tsubasa follows up with a wind attack, neat!", then in battle 400 Itsuki attacks with lighting then a Session of 7 other characters comes through while you time the reset with the Duo Art (choosing the one with the optimal effect in the heat of the moment) to get another chain of 7 going all off of one attack. Well, that probably doesn't make much sense if you haven't seen the game before, but basically, the system is fun and engaging. Speaking of which, one of the main appeals to the battle system is the Session system. It's easy to understand, and satisfying to play with. When you hit an enemy's weakness, your party members can follow up on that attack in an automated "Session attack" if they have the appropriate skill. As you progress through the game your Sessions will become increasingly more powerful, including the ability for back-up party members to participate, and for Sessions to switch targets mid-battle if their original target falls to the Session attack.

The level of grinding varies depending on the difficulty you're playing on. Easy, Normal, and Hard require no grinding if you're fighting every enemy along the way. Normal makes for a good introduction difficulty if you've never played an SMT game before. Even on Normal, you may find yourself caught off guard in boss fights! Hard is a fair, fun difficulty for those looking for a bigger challenge. After beating the game once you unlock Lunatic, which will be a satisfying challenge for those hungry for more. Finally, you can change the difficulty at any time in the menu, so don't feel locked into what you picked at the start if you want to make things harder or easier!

    Narrative

TMS is not a story-driven game. It's a character-driven game. It knows this and more than succeeds at what it sets out to do. While many characters follow well-known tropes, the superb writing makes them a charming and colourful cast that you'll quickly find yourself growing fond of. This is particularly helped by the focus on text messages, where their unique typing quirks even play a part in their personalities shining through The game rarely takes itself seriously, and I think that works out for the best. It's fun to sit back and enjoy the absolute bonkers zaniness that the game is. You will absolutely find yourself literally laughing out loud at some of the antics in TMS.

Of course, as a Fire Emblem fan, there are countless references to FE, both direct and indirect, that are fun to enjoy. Each character has a Mirage partner, a Fire Emblem character, who becomes their Carnage (weapon) in battle. The weapons themselves are often from Fire Emblem, such as Ragnell or Yewfelle. You'll be sure to find a lot of familiar faces among the bosses too. There are even references to FE characters in the form of various shop employees! I could go into further detail about what other FE references you could expect, but I don't want to spoil anything.

    Pacing

The whole game has excellent pacing, including the ability to fast forward through just about anything and everything, including all text and even minor animations. All enemies are engaged on the overworld by attacking a shadow and then walking into it, so skipping battles is as simple as not walking into the enemy after knocking it down. If there's one drawback on the pacing front, it's needing to go back to Fortuna to unlock new Carnage, but if you're playing Encore, the load times make that not too painful, and you can stock up on multiple Carnage at a time so you can immediately switch to a new one after you finish unlocking all the skills on your current weapon. There's also plenty of checkpoints in dungeons and you can fully heal back at Fortuna so you can go all out with your resources during the battles, which I personally enjoy a lot. This is not a resource conservation type of game, TMS is about going all-out, all the time.

    Conclusion

Tokyo Mirage Sessions is one of my favourite games of all-time. You do not need to be remotely into J-Pop, SMT, or even Fire Emblem to enjoy this game. It's a masterpiece in the JRPG genre that I would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! As well, I'm always willing to help with TMS if you DM me.

Who are your favorite FE 4 pairings?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:40 AM PST

I have seen many threads about how amazing Chrom x Olivia is, and a rise of Vaike x Cordelia. Lucina x Robin. Many awakening ships and 3H as well now that its both new and popular.

But what about FE4, the first major shipping emblem? I am talking favorite for story not for gameplay

For me the only ones I'm really attached to are Azel and Tailtu and Tine with Seliph. Other than that none stuck with me.
