    Fire Emblem shelf is coming along nicely! Does anyone know of any ~50CAD merch (official or fanmade) that they think would look good on there? Sakura Nendoroid is on the way!

    What is your opinion about the warp staff/spell?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:34 PM PST

    After playing almost all the FE titles, I started to wonder if the warp staff should exist, from a game design perspective, since it's existance can help trivialize many maps in a game. Now I know that not all the FE games have warp staffs with infinite range like in Thracia 776 or in Shadow Dragon, but nonetheless it still helps a lot at the time of trivializing the game. I personally love and have fun using them, but from time to time I read comments saying that they may not like a FE title because it exists and can cheese the game.

    So now I ask: What do you think about the warp staff/spell?

    What's your favourite familial relationship in the series?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:34 PM PST

    I've been on a Reglay kick a bit lately, and I'll never tire of Erk's relationship with Pent and Louise, as well as Dieck's relationship with the family.

    Chrom!Inigo and Lucina with their parents as well as Azura!Soleil and Shigure with their parents are my personal favourites, I think the family dynamics there are just brilliant.

    I also really dig the cousin relationships we get, few as they may be. Lucina and Owain, Seliph and Leif, and (FE15 spoilers) Alm and Berkut in particular.

    Finn as the guardian of Leif and Nanna is a heart wrenching one too...

    There's just too many to name! So I'll leave the floor to you all.

    Does any name in the FE games match a regular word in your language in a funny way?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:01 PM PST

    I'm playing Sacred Stones right now, and I've met a character named Tirado. That is a really funny name for a Portuguese speaker, like myself, since it's exactly like our word "tirado", which roughly means "taken" (it's the past participle of the verbo "tirar", to take). Other curious instances are:

    - Serra: the word "serra" means "sawblade" in Portuguese;

    - Ares: the word "ares" is the plural of "ar", which means "air";

    - Canas: the word "canas" is the plural of "cana", which means "(sugar)cane";

    -Saias: the word "saias" is the plural of "saia", which means "skirt";

    - Lute: the word "lute" is a form of the verb "lutar", which means "to fight";

    Just to name a few.

    Notice that I'm not claiming that these are intentional, or that these are true etymologies. It's just curious.

    Have you guys came by a similar situation, where a name of som sort is written just like a regular word in your language? Of course, there are those well known cases, like "Fiora", "Tsubasa", "Linda", but we're looking for funny coincidences.

    What are things you liked about fire emblem fates?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 11:03 AM PST

    I personally feel Fates gets too much hate and while some of it is earned, I think there is a lot of good to come from these games. For I like how experimental IS was with the game despite the results. It helped Distinguish the games and also helped IS get out of their comfort zone for Three houses in my opinion.

    Flaming Hot Lava Take: Doubling with Javelins and Hand Axes is bad game design

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:23 PM PST

    Okay maybe not that hot.

    They actively reduce the greater mental input for good player phase decisions in exchange for low mental input enemy phase juggernauting.

    They compound and exaggerate the problem of low enemy quality in games, and lessen the need for unit variety. In games where they can be forged like PoR/RD or Awakening, they are even more busted.

    Even the option to use them on player phase is not great for design, since it allows the player to avoid a counter. A combat art to just throw the normal weapon and KO an enemy would make more sense.

    A major part of the reason that Binding Blade and Conquest have good gameplay is that these weapons are not the one stop solution to most things.

    Binding has notably lower hit on them with 50 and 55 (Thracia has 45 and 50!), making them more of a gamble to use because they are likely to provide 0 damage. But I've used them a lot and they still work fairly well.

    Conquest gives more reasonable hit rates at 65 and 75, but instead piles on the consequences, not allowing crits/skills/doubles and giving the enemy +5 spd. That's a really great balance patch that encourages player phase offense most of the time.

    Magic weapons like the levin sword are fine because most units have crap magic, and the extra -20 avoid in Fates forces the unit to actually tank hits and rely on guard stance. Legendary weapons are also a notable exception that make sense to give 1-2 range.

    Try it out for yourself. Play any one of the games and ban all use of those weapons. I guarantee that you will have a fun experience.

    r/Fireemblem plays and discusses Hacks & Fangames #16: Broken Legacy

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:20 AM PST

    Jo, everyone!

    Welcome to the 16th thread of this small community project, where we play, discuss, shill and promote Hacks & Fangames.

    For this week, we have a specific thread, where we talk about specific Hacks/Fangames instead of general discussion about them.

    You can find a spreadsheet with time plan for discussions here!

    Today we will be discussing Broken Legacy, a full SRPG project featuring 21 chapters by Robinco.

    This is one of my fav. out there, and while i didn't finish it because the full version save file isn't fully compitable with the older version i played a while back, the 11 chapters i played were really really well designed. It's also one of the rare fanprojects out there where hard mode is well designed imo. I also like how the project implemented skills, with them being combat arts but with cooldown instead. The music choice is also really good. A 0% and 100% growth mods also exist, and you can change the difficulty and modes at any time! My main complaint about the project is it using GBA portraits, as they don't mesh well with SRPG studio, but that shouldn't really stop you from playing it, not to mention getting access to art for a free project is pretty hard in general.

    I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fanproject to play, and i will be restarting the full version soon myself to finish it!

    Next week we will be discussing Pokemblem by Vesly! If you ever wanted a Pokemon x FE crossover, check this one out!
