A comprehensive analysis on why Lysithea is not the best mage in Three Houses. Posted: 26 Dec 2020 12:58 PM PST In Chapter 4 of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Lyn and company are tasked with defending a woman named Natalie from bandits. In the chapter, the player is prevented from looking at Natalie's stats, likely to hide the fact that she has 25 con to prevent the player from rescuing her. However, when looking in the game's data, we can see that she has no personal base stats except for 2 defense and -1 resistance. In GBA, a unit's personal base stats are combined with the base stats of their class to give their actual bases, resulting in their actual in game base stats. Since the Civilian class has 10 base HP and 0 in all its other stats, Natalie does effectively have negative resistance. When disabling the measure that prevents her stats from being viewed, we can see that this is indeed the case, even though the status screen does not properly show negative stats. But why would they do this? It's not for gameplay purposes, as none of the enemies in the chapter use magic. This was clearly meant to serve as some sort of indication about Natalie. Since the GBA games don't have a magic stat for non magic classes, we can assume that this is representative of her magical ability as a whole. As Natalie has no defining traits aside from the fact that she has a bad leg, I believe it is safe to conclude that a person's magical abilities are derived from their legs and their walking ability. This means that Lysithea's magic abilities are absolutely pathetic. Standing at a miniscule 148 centimeters (~4'10), she's by far the shortest mage in the game pre timeskip. While post timeskip, she does manage to creep up to a barely respectable 160 centimeters (~5'3), she is now only superior to Annette, and hardly manages to grow comparable to the superior base heights of mages such as Hubert, Dorothea, or Linhardt. Additionally, her experimentation at the hands of the Agarthans has left her with a fragile constitution; her frail frame is likely unable to walk long distances without rest. Therefore, the best mage in the game is actually Balthus. Standing at an incredible 198 centimeters (~6'6), he's the second tallest character in the whole game, only second to Dedue, and absolutely dwarfs every other character canonically in a magic using class. Additionally, his regular exercise routine should give him the ability to march long distances without too much issue. Indeed, although he often flaunts his status as the King of Grappling, Balthus is even more undeniably the King of Magic. [link] [comments]

What makes fog a good addition to maps? Posted: 26 Dec 2020 08:08 AM PST Initially this was posted in the question thread, but it seemed like it had potential for good discussion. Basically, are there any generally applicable factors that can make fog a good addition to a map? And would these additions be on a map specific level, or would they be game-wide mechanics? I'm of the opinion that fog isn't an objectively bad mechanic, despite the frustration it causes some players. I think a map like FE6's chapter 14 is a good map with fog. But, is it a map that uses fog to enhance the chapter overall, or does it just happen to be a fun chapter that happens to have fog? What sort of situations would be helped by the addition of fog? There's a lot to think about that I've never really considered before, and I think even though I don't think it's bad, I couldn't really spell out what can make it good. Basically, what are people's thoughts on how fog can positively affect gameplay? [link] [comments]
