My holiday gift to the community - check out TriangleAttack.com!

    Posted: 24 Dec 2020 01:36 PM PST

    Hey r/fireemblem, keb here.

TLDR; I made a new FE resource site for the GBA games: https://triangleattack.com !! Check it out for goodies like average stats calculators, support bonus calculators, detailed chapter images, FE6 enemy stats and more.

For those who don't know me, I run a Three Houses information website that can be found at https://fe3h.com. After working on the site and exclusively playing FE3H for the better part of a year, I decided to take a break and played some FE6. Doing so made me realize that I wanted an fe3h.com equivalent for every game in the series. Something that loads fast, is nice to look at (on phones especially), constantly updated, as comprehensive as possible, and without any god awful autoplay videos (looking at you, Fandom).

So, after 2 months of hard work, I am extremely excited to announce that as of today FE3H.com will be rebranding into Triangle Attack - a modern, consistently updated, user-friendly Fire Emblem resource.

Of course, I didn't "finish" every game in the series. That will probably take a few years or so. However, we have sites for all 3 GBA games that all meet the standard that FE3H.com has set. Along with a slick new look, I've also included some features that I have not seen anywhere else before. To name some of my favorites:

Don't worry, FE3H.com will remain active and updated. It will just be branded under the Triangle Attack name. As usual, if you notice any mistakes/bugs or have any suggestions for things to add, just DM me on here or Twitter.

Hopefully these resources make GBA FE a little more fun to play for a few folks over the holidays, and I look forward to what we can bring to the community in 2021.

Happy holidays, and stay safe everyone!

Robin and Sumia is a pairing that doesn't get enough credit

    Posted: 24 Dec 2020 04:47 PM PST

It is as the title says. I personally believe that Robin and Sumia is a pairing that does not receive enough credit, despite several factors that would suggest the pairing would be more popular than it is currently.

    1.) Common Interests

Robin and Sumia's supports together, while not deep or expand on the lore of the game, do delve into the characters' mutual interests, and gives a plausible reason for the two to bond, as they build their relationship upon a common interest. In their supports, Sumia discusses with Robin of their enjoyment of books in their spare time, with Robin stating that though he prefers 'literary' texts, he does enjoy a little bit of everything, while Sumia seems to read just about everything as well, though she is fonder of fictional stories with strong protagonists, which she reads to immerse herself as the characters, in hopes of becoming more like them, instead of her clumsy self. This love of novels between the two extends to their S-Support as well, with Robin and Sumia lamenting that their love is straight out a storybook, and that they'll live happily ever after.

    2.) Family Dynamic

In my opinion, the family of Robin, Sumia, Cynthia, and Morgan, creates one of the best family dynamics available within the game. Cynthia and Morgan, inspired by the many tales of their cunning father, and reckless mother, aspire to become a legendary hero and tactician respectively. There also is the resemblance within the family. Cynthia, with Robin's default hair color, shares similarities in her hairstyle to F!Robin's default hairstyle, while Morgan with Sumia's hair color bears a striking resemblance to her mother, with similar facial features. Though in my belief, one of the most interesting aspects of the family, would be the relationship between Robin and his daughter Cynthia. The idea that the great evil Cynthia vowed to destroy to avenge her mother when she traveled back in time, originates from her own father, and that she herself, an aspiring hero, possesses the Fell Dragon's blood within her, creates an interesting prospect of her character, that unfortunately cannot be explored within game.

    3.) The Future-Past

Within the DLC, 'The Future-Past', parents of the future-children can interact with them when standing side-by-side, to see unique dialogue. Robin's interaction with Cynthia, if he is her father, is what I consider to be the best dialogue out of the entire DLC. Robin's plea with Cynthia to return to his dimension with him, even if such a request goes against Naga's wishes is heartfelt and genuine. Cynthia declines the offer, as she feels responsible for protecting the people and world that remain in the hellscape. The dialogue does an excellent job of highlighting certain aspects their characters, such as Robin's empathy, and Cynthia's heroism.

This was just a small post hoping to give some merit to the pair, as I hardly ever saw any discussion about it.

Shadow Dragon Hard 5 is a surprisingly fair and entertaining difficulty

    Posted: 24 Dec 2020 02:47 PM PST

Back when I played Shadow Dragon for the first time earlier this year, I played on hard 2, which I enjoyed at the time but thought was a little easy. I finally got around to playing Hard 5, and I was pleasantly surprised by just how good it is. There are some hiccups here and there, and warp can be a little ridiculous, but it was a super fun experience.

So, the bad first. Warp is ridiculously broken. This is more mixed than bad, but the amount of endgame maps that you just straight up do not have to play is kind of ridiculous, and part of me is debating on playing the game warpless next time (or at the very least, restricting my warps somehow, like being unable to hammerne, or being unable to warp skip and instead only being able to do short range warps, or something like that).

Early game bosses are ridiculous. This doesn't mean that there are no strategies to beat them, but rather that the strategies to beat them fast are still unreliable at best and suicidal at worst (despite save points), and if you want to beat them reliably, you need to go through the incredibly tedious process of breaking their weapons. Mekkah recently-ish spent like 100 turns on chapter 2 alone just to break a hand axe, and this is unacceptable for how strong of an early game boss is. The second you enter chapter 4, bosses became a hell of a lot more reasonable. I'd also like to throw an honorable fuck you to Medeus for how ridiculous the strats needed to beat him are, but oh well, that's just how it is.

That said, these are just the bosses. I'm not going to say the early maps are perfect, because there are still some hiccups outside of the bosses. Jagen is your most reliable unit to weaken enemies early on, and yet his accuracy is not as high as I would like it to be, and his luck is so low (presumably because back in FE1, low luck on Jagen was fine since it didn't contribute to his crit avoid) means he's constantly facing chance of death. This is especially bad in chapter 1 where you have little units to wall with, no healing until near the end +1 vulnerary and a fort, and no save point midway through the map. Simply raising his luck would have gone a long way to making the early game better. Despite this, the maps flow relatively well with a cycle of baiting and killing enemies you bait while still giving a sense of urgency (despite the bait and switch) thanks to some linked AI and enemies that move on their own from turn 1 making you really hustle.

The good flow of these maps holds through for more or less the entire game, with a couple stinkers thrown in there. Wooden Cavalry is so god-awful that it, along with the early game bosses, make me wonder if the game was even playtested. Gharnef's map is rather tedious to traverse with the one tile wide corridor and swarm bishops more or less forcing you to bring double/triple ballista to deal with them. Thankfully, both of these maps can be warp skipped, but I shouldn't need to do that to enjoy a map.

The unit balance is interesting in that while there are some units that are obviously better in every way, like Abel vs Matthis, Caeda vs the entire cast, Lena vs Maria or whatever, the bad units are surprisingly usable. I had Matthis kill Medeus this run. He had a fair amount of kills, and this is thanks to just how nice forging is. Effective weaponry that can be traded around to kill chains of cavs is just hilariously fun. Plus, with the reclassing, you can go into a class that is kinder to you to make training easier, switching back later or staying in the new one. I had Linde go cleric to give her staff rank and to train her without needing her to see combat, and she turned out just fine. Also, thanks to the low caps, the allocation of stat boosters (which are fairly plentiful), can be enough to save a bad or screwed unit.

When it comes to enemies, I like that the way their stats scale do so in a way that does not entirely invalidate player stats, but still encourage you to do more than throw stat sticks at them. Their speed, notably, doesn't really get that high, letting you avoid being doubled or even double them yourself if your unit is fast. They instead hit really hard and have a lot of hp, but not necessarily a lot of defense, meaning you don't necessarily need to outright dogpile a single unit, but avoiding counters is super important since they hurt a lot, and you can't really 1v1 either, at least before your growth units get out of control (Abel was able to ORKO from around chapter 16 onwards for me, but I think he was blessed.)

Idk man. This is really rambly, but the point is, I really loved my experience with hard 5. This is probably my favorite hard mode in the series at this point.
