Do you prefer romances to be more intended by the devs, or more geared to player choice?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:52 PM PST

In Fire Emblem, you had at least a few relationships that were clearly more intended than others. Eliwood and Ninian is probably the prime example, although others like Lyn and Hector were likely intended as well.

However as the series progresses, it seems like the devs are moving more towards relationships being all just as likely as others. In 3h, I don't think there are very many, if any, intended relationships, and instead the player can put whoever they want together.

My question is which you prefer. Personally I like the devs to tell me the story they want to tell, because I always feel bad when I think that I'm making the wrong choice for someone. However, I totally see the appeal of getting to pick as well.

Elincia's Actions in Part 3 were really clever

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:25 PM PST

In chapter 3-9, Valtome ends up raiding Crimean villages in response to Elincia's refusal to support him.

Queen Elincia, however, goes against the wishes of the Crimean nobles and resolutely denies each of Valtome's requests. Her reply enrages Valtome, who sees Crimea as little more than a vassal of the empire. Ignoring Zelgius's counsel, Valtome orders his army to enter Crimea and take whatever they need from the villages along the way.

Elincia is able to deduce that Begnion's leadership must be split and that there is likely turmoil within their ranks.

Elincia: I doubt that the apostle would allow this sort of thing to happen. We should prepare for the worst. I fear something horrible must be happening within Begnion.

Elincia allows Begnion troops to enter deep inside Crimean territory.

Zelgius: However, I must ask you to agree on these two points. First, the Imperial Army shall be given leave to pass through Crimea toward Gallia. Second, we shall be allowed to engage the Gallian army in towns near the Crimea-Gallia border.

Elincia: Excuse me?! This peace talk is meaningless. You will still do battle and spill blood within our borders!

Zelgius: I'm afraid this is the best I can offer. It's sometimes necessary to cut your losses for the greater good. Please think on it. Tomorrow, my army will begin marching toward Gallia. If the Crimean army does not interfere, I will take it as a sign of agreement. Farewell, Your Majesty. [leaves]

After Elincia's meeting with Valtome, the Crimean Royal Knights return to the capital of Melior, leaving the border villages between Crimea and Gallia completely undefended.

This move of her fools many in the Laguz Alliance into thinking Crimea has betrayed them while also fooling Valtome into thinking that Crimea is now on his side thus Elincia exploits Valtome's arrogance. This shows Elincia is quite deceptive, not unlike her tacticians Bastian and Lucia.

The Laguz Alliance finally makes its way back to Gallia, but word of Begnion's approach allows them no time for rest. The news that Gallia's ally, Crimea, has allowed Begnion to travel through its lands comes as a great blow to the Laguz Alliance.

Caineghis is knowledgeable enough about Elincia to conclude she has a plan up her sleeve and despite his intelligence, even he doesn't know what she's planning which goes to show how hard to predict she is.

Caineghis: I doubt that Crimea has sided with Begnion. Queen Elincia is very clever, and I will not stop trusting her judgment just yet. She most likely allowed the Imperial Army to pass through her lands in order to avoid a slaughter.

Valtome: Uwee hee hee. Finally, they see the light and are coming to fight with us! Excellent. Took them long enough. I suppose when you have the brain of a gnat, these things take some time to sink in.

Elincia: [turns to the laguz] I am Queen Elincia of Crimea. I have a message for the commanders of both armies! I am here to declare the will of Crimea and its people! Crimea has been ruled under the ideals of peace and equality since the reign of my father, King Ramon. As such, I cannot and will not allow you to spill blood upon our land! Therefore...

Elincia's gambit breaks the resolve of Zelgius and the troops directly under his command and so they withdraw, leaving Valtome and some nasty Begnion soldiers as the remaining threats.

Levail: General Zelgius! What are your orders? Shall we launch an attack?

    Zelgius: No. We will withdraw.

    Levail: Are you certain, General?

Zelgius: Could you cast aside your weapon while surrounded by armed soldiers?

Levail: I don't know, sir... No, probably not.

Zelgius: Queen Elincia has done something that even I would be hard pressed to do. For that, we must show our respect.

Valtome: Stop this instant! Wait! Where do you think you're going?! Attack those mangy beasts!

Zelgius: Please forgive my audacity. However, we are withdrawing. Every battle ebbs and flows. To go against these tides is unwise. Please understand, Senator.

Valtome: You self-righteous fool... You'll understand something else, once we're through with this battle.

Her actions singlehandedly turned the tide of war. Which is quite impressive considering how Zelgius managed to turn the tide of war against the Laguz Alliance but now Elincia managed to turn the tide of war by breaking his will by appealing to his sense of honour.

When you realize how strong the Begnion Central Army is and how weak Crimea is compared to it, that's an incredible feat for Crimea which has just been recovering from civil war.

Also, when you consider the fact that the Laguz Alliance did not have to partake in this battle, thus preserving their forces while also making sure the chaos from the war doesn't grow too much, the decisiveness of this victory is made even more clear.

Finally, Valtome being confronted near the Gallian border means he can't actually call for reinforcements as he would have if Elincia stopped him at the border, and you see how her plan crippled Valtome logistically as well.

Moreover, this move of Elincia's goes to show that while she's a merciful Queen, she doesn't allow her merciful nature to be exploited and rather exploits it to achieve a great victory in contrast to Micaiah whose merciful nature ends up backfiring at the end of part 1.
