Character Analysis: Motives of Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd in Part I of Fire Emblem: Three Houses

More often than not, all walks of human life tend to possess motives for their actions, speech, choices and all other things that fall within the same category of those previously listed. While there is an unbounded amount of possible reasons to one's motives, a greatly ubiquitous reason is due to trauma which is often lacking resolve. In the tactical role-playing video game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses made in collaboration by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo, motives influenced by past traumatic experiences are common amongst the diverse cast of characters in the game. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a game set in a fictional continent called Fódlan that is divided into three regions, the Adrestian Empire, Leicester Alliance and lastly, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. In the middle of the three regions resides Garreg Mach Monastery which is home to the Officer's Academy. The Officer's Academy is a school that teaches the art of warfare to the offspring of noble families within Fódlan and it is made of three houses. The Black Eagles House is for students from the Adrestian Empire, the Golden Deer House is for students who are from the Leicester Alliance and the Blue Lions is for those from the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. Out of the three houses, the Blue Lions with house leader Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd, gives the most axiomatic portrayal of witnessing the motives of someone be directly influenced by their trauma.

At the start of the game, Dimitri appears to be pragmatic in his ways and is naturally chivalrous. However, the protagonist, Byleth, senses something dire lying within his knightly personality, "...but I sense darkness lurking beneath." (Prologue: An Inevitable Encounter) which foreshadows the reasoning for Dimitri's motives in his story. There are multiple examples of Dimitri's "darkness" beginning to bare its fangs, one of the first being in Chapter 3. In this chapter, the archbishop of Garreg Mach, Rhea, tasks the Blue Lions and their professor, Byleth, to fend off a militia who intends to rebel against the monastery. Rhea informs Byleth on why they mustn't neglect battling said militia "Lord Lonato is a minor lord of the Kingdom. He has been showing hostility toward the church for some time now..." (Chapter 3: Mutiny in the Mist). Rhea sees anyone who disagrees with the church as a vile disgrace, especially if they attempt a rebellion like Lord Lonato has. Contrasting Rhea's ideals, Dimitri feels that striking down another for such a reason is inherently immoral and harbours immense remorse, "Those weren't knights or soldiers, but fathers and sons. We.. we shouldn't have killed them. We should have found another way." (Chapter 3: Mutiny in the Mist). In the Black Eagles route with house leader Edelgard, she is undoubtedly unphased by killing Lord Lonato's militia, "...I, too, will be the sort of leader who's willing to risk the lives of my citizens in service of a higher cause." (Chapter 3: Mutiny in the Mist). Similarly, Claude of the Golden Deer house seems unbothered by killing and finds positives in what his house did in this chapter during the Golden Deer route, "If we hadn't done what we did, the rebel army would have followed us all the way to the monastery...We stopped that from happening. You should be proud."(Chapter 3: Mutiny in the Mist). Dimitri's penitence of justly killing strongly stands out from Edelgard's and Claude's hints to the fact he has severe trauma revolving around war and death. Despite living in a time where lethal battles are commonplace, Dimitri has extensive trauma surrounding death. This will give voice to the reasoning behind Dimitri's motives as the game progresses.

Another time the "darkness" of Dimitri shows its face is when Garreg Mach learns of Remire Village, a small territory within the Empire, is facing maximal brutality and terror. Byleth's father named Jeralt, Byleth, the knights of Garreg Mach and the Blue Lions house were sent out by Rhea to investigate what exactly had transpired in Remire Village. Witnessing all the chaos and destruction within the village triggered a PTSD reaction in Dimitri. When triggered, he adopts a callous, bloodthirsty demeanor, dissimilar to the usual virtuous side he often displays to the world, "Kill them all. Don't let a single one of them escape. Sever their limbs and crush their wicked skulls!" (Chapter 8: The Flame in the Darkness). Needless to say, there is now a discrepancy of Dimitri's feelings towards forcing someone to fall to their demise. In Chapter 3: Mutiny in the Mist, he was conscience-stricken by needing to kill while in this chapter he evolves to a bellicose boar. This is because trauma manifests itself differently depending on the situation. He believed it to be groundless and unlawful for someone like Lord Lanato to be eradicated; Dimitri solemnly states, "Lord Lonato didn't take up arms out of a lust of power. He simply believed his cause to be just. Who's to say it wasn't? Maybe we didn't have to cut him down like that. Maybe we could have reached a mutual understanding…"(Chapter 3: Mutiny in the Mist). However, after witnessing the events that had transpired in Remire Village, he adopts a rabid, revenge seeking attitude because there was no just cause for such gruesome violence. In addition, it was extraordinarily reminesisnet of his childhood trauma four years prior to enrolling into the Officer's Academy. After returning to Garreg Mach, Dimitri confides in Byleth and tells them the reason for his blood lust earlier, "You see, Professor… I saw the same flames of torment just four years ago… in Duscur...My father... my stepmother… Four years ago, they lost their lives towards those flames. I'll never forget… I still remember their faces. Their screams. The tortured last moments of every person that died that day…"(Chapter 8: The Flame in the Darkness). The previous quotes exhibit Dimitri's inner torment and give reason to his complicated feelings regarding death and destruction. More importantly, they give a clearer reason to his true motives. In the same scene, he divulges his preeminent motive to Byleth, leaving them in a state of shock, "There's a reason I came to the Officer's Academy. Just one reason. I came here for revenge. And one day, I will have it.". (Chapter 8: The Flame in the Darkness).

Dimitri's motives are the most distinct thing about him as a character. His motives are heavily influenced by his childhood trauma which was watching his family get slaughtered and then becoming engulfed in flames during the Tragedy of Duscur. That trauma caused him to feel as if it's his utmost duty to avenge the dead. Dimitri is a good reminder that even the most acclaimed, the kindest and the strongest people have their own inner demons to face whether that be trauma that brings out the most colossal problems of a person or severe mental illness and delusion. Traumatic experiences affect everything in a life, most prevalently, one's ultimate motives.
