What does it take for them to be good? Thief - Rogue - Whisper

    Obligatory joke

Hello and welcome back to: What does it take for them to be good? Today I'll be analysing one of FE's classic classes, the thief class. Now, thieves aren't meant to be a combat class unlike the previous classes we've covered and are instead meant to be more of a utility class. But how well does said utility serve them? Now, Fire Emblem games are usually easy enough to allow you to use anyone you like, but when discussing what the best classes are we need to look at who makes the game the easyest and why that is. So in this post I'll be analyzing the thief, rogue, whisper, assasin and outlaw classes to see why they work or don't work in certain FE games and what can be done to improve them in the future. This analysis assumes the hardest difficulties, no grinding and fast play.

NOTE: The reason why I'm analysing the outlaw class from Fates is because it's called thief in the Japanese version (Source: https://fireemblemwiki.org/wiki/Thief)

Analyzing their viability through the games

    FE1

    • This isn't their best outing. The main flaw Julian and Rickard face is their low bases and the prevalenece of alternate ways of accomplishing their role of opening chests and doors through the use of keys and Marth's Fire Emblem. While both Julian and Rickard have nice growths they suffer from their low weapon level and 0% growth in said area which allows them to only use iron, steel and devil weaponry. They can be deployed to raid some chests on more maps where Marth has better things to do than open chests, but aside from that they are a fairly mediocre class here

    FE2

    • Kaga confirms that thieves were indeed a mistake by not being in Gaiden

    FE3

    • A bit better for them as dismounting is in this game and the 7 movement thieves have is quite valuable. Julian also joins with better bases and actual weapon level growth which puts him only 3 point behind a silver sword, so he can contribute somewhat as a combat unit in book 2. However, door keys are still buyable and Marh can still open chests, so while a bit better, they are still a somewhat mediocre class here. Also they still can't promote

    FE4

    • So this is kinda interesting. So, Dew, Patty and Daisy are kinda meh combat wise and have trouble keeping up with your mounted units in the huge maps of FE4, however their main nieche is their ability to steal gold. Every time they hit an enemy they steal some gold from them and they can give said gold to any memeber of the army. As there are some valuable items you might wanna pass around like the Paragon ring they have an interesting nieche, especailly in ranked runs. However, most units don't have a problem going through the arena or visiting villages to get gold and those that do usually aren't very good anyway. So, while they have somewhat of a nieche in this game, it's far from an amazing one. At least they can finally promote

    FE5

    • Now, they've finally hit their stride. In this game thieves can steal enemy weapons as long as they have enough constitution to carry them. This makes a thief like Lifis a great counter to enemy mages as he can steal away fire, thunder and wind tomes with ease. Lara is also quite good as their are a lot of nice things to steal in Thracia, but most of her utility is thanks to her dancer promotion. And Perne is also excellent. He comes with somewhat low bases for a promoted unit, but his growth rates are nice and can be further boosted by scrolls. He also has a B ranks in swords along with a 5 FCM so he can even be a valuable combat unit if the player desires. However, his main use is stealing away those warp staves with a body ring. He also has Sol and Vantage just to make sure you know how good he is. Overall, this is an excellent game for them.

    FE6

    • They aren't nearely as useful here, but still good. Door and chest keys are buyable, but you might wanna save some money for the chapter 21 secret shop, so deploying a thief isn't a bad idea. Chad, despite having bad combat, has a lot of use in chapter 6 as he can open a lot of valuable chests there and you don't get buyable chest keys by that point. Astolfo is also a fairly decent combat unit in the western isles due to his good bases and growths. Cath is just bad though. There are also some valuable items to steal like Narcian's Delphi shield. Overall, this is a clear downgrade from FE5, but they still have some value. Also, they can't promote once again

    FE7

    • Thieves are a pretty similar class here. Matthew is a failry solid earlygame unit due to having a lot of chests to himself, not wasting deployment slots in the first few chapters, having decent combat for the earlygame and being able to steal the silver card. Because of this he is quite valuable in ranked runs. Legault is also quite decent overall. Jaffar is intersting as he comes with excellent bases, being able to even deal with the Cog of Destiny valkyres reliably, but he is unfortunately locked to 1 range in a fairly low enemy quality game and swordlock in a game where the large majority of enemies use lances. Also, the assassin promotion sucks.

    FE8

    • Thieves aren't too valuable here. Colm gets you an energy ring and an Elysian whip so he at least has some uses, but Rennac is just kinda meh as there isn't much very valuable left to steal in FE8 when he joins and his combat is only OK. Quite the downgrade from the previous two GBA games.

    FE9

    • Volke is an interesting thief. Unlike most, he actually has good bases and even good growths to go along with it, but the most interesting part is how he charges you 50 gold for opening a lock. This might seem like a steep price, but since you get so much money in FE9 you don't need to worry too much and the things he steals are worth more than 50 gold anyway and keys aren't buyable in this game. He has a story based promotion, which might seem like it would make him a good combat unit, but due to the low strength cap of his class, along with the poor might of daggers and lack of 2 range make him best still used as just a thief. He has a fairly interesting nieche in Maniac mode too as he can steal a lot of enemy physic staves. Oh yeah, Sothe exists too. He has Blossom which is an awful ability, meh bases, lock to a bad wapon type and can't promote, so what is his niche over Volke? He doesn't cost you 50 gold. Moving on

    FE10

    • So, Sothe heared my trashing him in PoR so he went to the gym to get godly bases in RD. Sothe is your best unit in the DB for quite a while and he never stops being one of the best units in part 1 either. Aside from his excellent bases he is also the first one to get a forgeable 1-2 range weapon and doesn't suffer the indoor penalty your mounted units do, so he also remains a very mobile unit too. He drops off in part 3 due to his poor strength cap, but he can still score some kills with effective weaponry against laguz. Sothe also suffers in part 4 as he can't promote and he is force deployed as he won't be too useful aside from stealing something in the desert chapter. His promotion is also bad as he still won't be doing any damage to anything, what a great story based promotion. So Sothe does drop off, but he's still a great unit due to his part 1 contributios. Heather on the other hand is just bad. There aren't that many useful things to steal in the greil mercs chapters and she has no reason to be in the tower. You can do some wacky disarm strats if you're insane. But, Heather is pretty bad overall.
    • Volke is also in this game. He requires 3000 gold to recruit, which you more than likely have at this point and his equipment costs around 8000 gold and he has a base convo in which he gives you 20 000 gold so even if you don't wanna use him he is worth recruiting. He has nice bases, but without the Baselard he won't be doing much damage and instead relies on lethality and his critical rate. There also isn't much reason to use him in the tower as Sothe can steal and the laguz royals have better combat than him

    FE11

    • They are pretty much just as bad as they were in FE1. No major difference here.

    FE12

    • Holy crap the enemy thieves here are monsters. Could I trade Julian or Rickard for one of them as those two suck. Anyway, there are some chapters where you wanna deploy Julian as there are more chests to raid, but for the most par they are benchwarmers.

    Awakening

    • I love how some people in the Awakening verse just leave chest in the open, not in something like castles. Anyway, Gaius is bad as he comes with bad bases and D rank in swords in a game where most maps are rout. His class choices actually have some good skills like movement +1, pass and acrobat, but they still aren't amazing classes and there just isn't much to steal in Awakening.

    Fates

    • So, let's get this out of the way, Niles is bad in Rev due to his bad bases. Anyway, let's talk about CQ Niles. He is a pretty good earlygame unit due to his above average res allowing him to one round enemy mages in his joining chapter and he can one shot some pegasus knights in chapter 10. Afterwards, he can promote to bow knight for extra mobility and shuriken breaker or adventurer to skip some maps with the combination of the rescue staff and pass. However, his main utility is through his personal skill, Kidnap. This allows him to capture certain enemy units if you have a prison in "My castle". Due to the high qaulity of CQ enemies this an insanel usefu skill. I can't do it justice here, so just check this thread for more examples. Of course the most notable one is Rallyman for his rallies. Nina is also a good unit and Shura is pretty good too, but he is usually reclassed to master ninja and killed in CQ so you can take his boots. Locktouch is also quite nice in CQ as while keys are dropable, they disappear after you bring them to a single chapter and then you need to get new ones from enemies.

    Echoes: SoV

    • No thievery will be done here

    3 Houses

    • Thief is a nice class to be in as it gives you 11 speed and a +2 speed modifier if you reclass into it. It also has 5 move unrestricted by forests, but the main reason you wanna reclass into this is because of Steal. As there are some valuable items to steal like the evasion rings from the house leaders and the Delphi shield from Ladislava, so getting the mastery isn't a bad idea. You can also get the speed benchmarks necessary to steal through things like rallies or gardening. However, you don't wanna stay in this class after you get steal as sword just suck in 3H. Assassin seems promising at first as 6 unrestricted movement by forests and bows seems like a good combination, but you're sacrificing a lot of killing power by going into this class. Its class masteries are also very unreliable, with the maing gimmick being the Stealth skil, which isn't very good.

    What makes them bad?

Usually it's the fact they have bad combat along with the fact they don't have very valuable utility. The existence of buyable door and chest keys also often makes the irrelevant.

What does it take for them to be good?

Thieves either need to have good combat like Perne in FE5 or need to have some kind of valuable utility. Keys either need to be very rare or thieves need to have some kind of special utility which meks them stand out. Niles has the very rare Kidnap skill which mkes him unque and valuable, while thieves in FE5 can steal enemy weapons. Without these unique abilities, said thieves/outlaws wouldn't be very valuable, but because of them they are among the most useful units in their games.

Thief is likely a rather hard class to balance due to not wanting to screw over newer players from valuable chests in case the thieves died, but that doesn't mean that you should absolutely kill their utility like a lot of games do. Thief is more of an experimental class through FE and I'm interested in seeing how the next FE game will handle them and if that wil be the game that gets them just right.

Previously: Fighter - Warrior - Reaver

What is your usual team composition class-wise when playing Fire Emblem?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:28 PM PST

    In my case, barring lords:

    -1/2 Infantry Axe Units (Warriors/Berserkers)

-1 Infantry Sword Unit (Swordmaster usually, sometimes Hero)

-1 Infantry Lance Unit (General usually, sometimes Halberdier/Spear Master)

    -1 Archer/Sniper

-1 Fire Mage (i.e. Tormod, if possible) or 1 Dark Mage

-1 Mounted Healer (barring personality bias in me choosing an infantry healer)

    -1 Refresher Unit

-1/2 Cavalier/Paladin Units (preferably not of the Jagen archetype)

If the difficulty is set on the highest setting (Hard/Maniac/Lunatic), depending on the game I may use a few powerful units starting off before benching them to train units I like and would find satisfaction making work. Otherwise, this is usually my team composition on all difficulties.
