Why do people suggest SOV as new players’ first FE Game?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:42 AM PST

Whenever a newcomer makes a "what FE game should I start with" post there's always 1-2 people who suggest that the poster start with Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia. Now, SOV is definitely a good FE game and it has excellent music and presentation. That being said, I don't at all understand why people would suggest it as someone's first Fire Emblem game.

Obviously anyone can start with any FE game and get into the franchise, but generally speaking it would be a good idea for newcomers to start with a FE game that's going to reflect and teach the core tenets of the franchise. Hence why FE7, FE8, FE9, FE13, and FE14BR are often suggested as newcomer's first games. To me at least, SOV doesn't seem like an ideal starting point because the game is so unique. It's full of game specific mechanics like dungeon exploration, monster skirmishes, Mila statue promotions, and Valentian magic. Then add uncommon mechanics like weapon evolutions, very limited inventories, genuinely good archers, unbreakable weapons, combat arts, and overworld map navigation. Lastly, add obtuse elements like desert and swamp maps, cantors and witches, and Alm's trials and you have a recipe for frustration and confusion for first time players.

All of this is not to say that you can't suggest SOV to new people, I just genuinely don't understand why it is so commonly presented as a good beginners game. The way I see it, the two most likely outcomes are that a new player either ends up loving SOV's mechanics and is disappointed to find out that no other FE games play quite like it, or they end up frustrated with their experience and never form a clear picture of what the average FE game is like. Beyond that, I feel that SOV's idiosyncrasies are best appreciated when you thoroughly understand the FE formula and can understand the ways in which SOV (and Gaiden by extension) broke from the formula and tried new mechanics.

If you have any thoughts on this matter, I'm all ears! I didn't make this post with the intent to shut people down or shame anyone, I made it because I'm genuinely confused and want to understand people's perspective. And if you happened to be introduced to Fire Emblem via SOV, I'd be curious to hear what your experience was like transitioning to the more traditional FE entries. Thanks all!

The Next Fire Emblem Remake: A Discussion

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 05:04 PM PST

With no news of what Fire Emblem 17 this past year, and with Fire Emblem games being released every few years, there is a very high chance we are going to get news of what our next mainline game will be. Now they could give us a completely new experience but that is a lot harder to speculate about, so I wanna talk a bit about what the next remake we could be getting would be, and to hear any thoughts you who are reading this may have. One thing I'll clarify, when I say remake its referring to something like Shadows of Valentia, and not like Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light on Switch like a port. Maybe remaster could be appropriate to, but I don't think there's an appropriate example of that.

I think most people will agree on three most likely candidates, those being Genealogy of the Holy War, Binding Blade, and Path of Radiance, and all three of these could have another game involved (being Thracia, Fe7, and Radiant Dawn, though I won't be considering these as much). I wanna go through all three games and list some pros and cons that point to evidence on which game we could get next.

Genealogy of the Holy War - The Pros

-From what I've seen this is probably the most wanted remake. Most (not all) people who've played this game outside of Japan love it, and I think I recall it being either the favourite game or second favourite game in Japan.

-People point to Three Houses, as it does take some inspiration from this game (I believe the premise of the game came from some of the characters attending a war school). Also, some argue that some locations being named after characters from the game (Tailtean Plains, Brigid...) may be evidence, but I'm not really sure why aside from the developers maybe having a soft spot for it.

-Could probably work well with modern Fire Emblem, as it is on the longer side, and they could also incorporate some cool features in the castles at the start of maps.

-Even though it has aged well, it is the oldest of every game not yet remade, so there is definitely a reason to update it.

-One of the characters we know as Ulster recently got a name change to Scatach (or something idk its hard to spell), and we so far have seen nothing come from it.

    The Cons

-It is more of a dark game, and touches on some more mature themes. This could push it more into the M rated category. Though Fire Emblem isn't really a children's series, it would still be a series first, and while they could change some of the writing it may rub some people the wrong way.

-A while back, there was a report about a cancelled remake for the 3DS that could be making its way to the Switch. While I'm not very knowledgeable on the topic, I imagine it might be hard on the 3DS to run the huge detailed maps in this game well.

-It would be more appealing to the longtime fans of the series, and wouldn't market as well to newcomers as Binding Blade or Path of Radiance may be. We did however get a Gaiden remake which was meant more for longtime fans, so maybe this is in its favor?

    Binding Blade - The Pros

-I believe that someone who worked on the series said around Shadows of Valentia's release that they would be interested in doing this game next, as "Roy's story has never been told in English." Can't remember who exactly it was but someone who works at the company? That sounds like good news.

-Someone who has never played Fire Emblem before, they could see Roy from Smash Bros and say "Hey I know that guy, maybe I'll check this out."

-I do think with the report of the 3DS remake, this one would make the most sense. Genealogy having the bigger maps and Path of Radiance needing more of a remaster than a remake, there isn't anything I can think of that points against this.

    The Cons

-I really don't think it is as loved as the other two games. From what I've seen people aren't as fond towards this as they are Genealogy or Path of Radiance. This could give them the excuse that it needs another chance, but I don't imagine it could generate as much excitement.

-The base game doesn't work as well with modern Fire Emblem, as it is pretty simple. Being not that long, along with no skills and just jumping from chapter to chapter it may need some updating to its gameplay (though as we've seen with SoV might not be enough).

-The game has also aged pretty well compared to Genealogy (debatably even PoR), and though we never got it Japan did and I imagine IS cares about that audience more.

Path of Radiance - The Pros

-Though it was released worldwide, it was also released at a low point in the series. Most people who've played it do really like this game, so it would make sense to remake/remaster and let more people try it out.

-Similar to Binding Blade, someone who's never played the series could see Ike from Smash Bros and say "Hey I know that guy, maybe I'll check this out," and I believe Ike is more popular than Roy.

-If Fire Emblem Heroes is any indication, IS loves to stick characters from this game in, so its possible they do have some interest in the continent of Tellius.

    The Cons

-It was released worldwide, so its not going to be like they're giving people who've played it outside of Japan something new, because even playing Genealogy or Binding Blade with an official translation would be something new.

-It is a lot more modern than the other two, so there's an argument to be made that it doesn't deserve a remake as much as the others, and a simple port would do.

-Though I've never played it, from what I've seen I think Radiant Dawn would need to come along with it to tell the story properly. Maybe they could do it in like a package but it'd be easier to do one game rather than two.

    What About Other Games?

Any of the Archanea games I don't think have any chance, along with Valentia. Thracia 776 I could see being a surprise since it never had any real chance to shine, but there is always the issue of story spoilers. FE7 is a very well beloved game, but I just don't think they'd do it before FE6. Sacred Stones, I just don't see it but its possible, and I don't see any reason they'd do any of the 3DS games. That leaves Three Houses and I don't imagine they'll release that game again.

That concludes the evidence I know just off the top of my head, I could obviously be missing some things here. Let me know what you think or what you want. Personally I see them doing Binding Blade since the 3DS cancelled remake really points in that direction, but I hope its Path of Radiance since I 'm not sure how I'll be able to play that game without getting a better computer or spending a few hundred (though I'd take a simple port as well).

Also, I hope everyone reading this has a good day :)

What does it take for them to be good? Mercenary - Hero - Vanguard

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:46 AM PST

Hello and welcome back to: What does it take for them to be good? Today I'll be analysing one of FE's most popular classes classes, the mercenary class. Mercenaryes are usually some of the msot annoying enemies to deal with and have some of the most badass members of the playable cast in their class. But, how useful are they in truly in FE games? Now, Fire Emblem games are usually easy enough to allow you to use anyone you like, but when discussing what the best classes are we need to look at who makes the game the easyest and why that is. So in this post I'll be analyzing the mercenary, hero and vanguard classes to see why they work or don't work in certain FE games and what can be done to improve them in the future. This analysis assumes the hardest difficulties, no grinding and fast play.

NOTE: This class was the most annoying one to research as they are sometimes the class for the lords and are sometimes also called Forrests because of fan translations. As such I'll be covering the lords in said classes seperately.

Analyzing their viability through the games

    FE1

    • They are pretty solid in this game. Ogma is a pretty good earlygame unit, but is hurt by his low weapon level of 6, while Navarre is slightly worse, but has the weapon level necessary to use higher rank swords before promotion. Astram and Samson are also solid prepromotes and swords are pretty good in FE1, so they have a strong showing for their first game

    FE2

    • I've already covered them in my myrmidon post, but in case you haven't read that, here's a quick rundown. They are great as dread fighter gives them 7 move, along with having good combat on both Alm and Celica's route. Alm's army appreciates a mercenary that can also make use of the lightning sword, while Saber does the heavy lifting against the earlygame pirates on Celica's route. They might not hold up as well once you start warping strong units around, but for the most part they hold up well through the entire game. Overall, they are a pretty great class in Gaiden.
    • Alm also promotes to a Hero in this game. Alm is really strong with solid bases and even good growth rates for Gaiden standards. He is your best unit, along with Lukas, at the start of the game and is a solid user of the lightning sword. He also gets the Royal Sword which is a very solid weapon. His late promotion might seem like a big problem, but due to most enemies in Gaiden not being that strong he can still hold his own. His promotion is nice as it puts his strength to 16 and he can also wield bows. Now, bows aren't that great in Gaiden, but Alm can make use of the Blessed bow which is effective against monsters, but usually he's best off using the Royal Sword. He also get the Falchion in the endgame and is the best unit to kill Duma. Overall, a very strong lord

    FE3

    • Even better than in FE1. They are pretty similar in book 1 and book 1 is shorter than FE1, so they don't get tham uch time to shine, but the story with book 2 is completely different. In Book 2 there are a lot of indoor maps where mounted units are forcefully dismounted and their movement drops to 6. However, Heroes get 7 indoor movement along with waterwalking making them incredebly useful. Ogma and Navarre really shine due to their solid bases and availability making them great combat units. They might be left behind by 11 move Marth with the Mercurius, but if you're using warp both of them, along with Astram are better users of the Mercurius as it doubles EXP gain and allows you to fully exploit the starsphere boost to growths. Excellent showing from them.

    FE4

    • NOTE: So in this game there are no mercenaries and instead of hero, male characters promote to Forrest. However, since these two classes are functionally identical I'll be covering them and I think the new project Naga patch calls them heroes anyway. They unfortunately aren't too great in this game because they are unmounted. While they have solid combat, not being mounted is a really big problem in FE4 as the maps are huge and your mounted units will most likely kill all the enemies before your infantry units even reach the battle due to the poor enemy quality in FE4. You can give them the leg ring so they can keep up, but usually there are much better choices.

    FE5

    • This time mercenary is a promoted class. It's a passable class as it gives Osian and Halvan access to swords, but it doesn't give much to someone like Machyua as swords are the best weapon type in FE5 and the weapon triangle is practically meaningless. The main star of the show is Galzus as he has excellent combat for the last few chapters of the game, but even he comes quite late. Now, mercenaries aren't a bad class and fatigue does promote class diversity and mercenaries aren't a bad choice for either outdoor or indoor maps, it's just that they aren't a particularly notable class.

    FE6

    • Dieck showcases the value of this class due to his solid earlygame bases allowing him to be your most notable earlygmae fight, along with Marcus until Rutger comes along. Dieck unfortunately drops off in the midgame as his poor growths hold him back from doubling and he has close competition for the hero crests by the myrmidons for the broken swordmaster promotion. Echidna does pick up the slac for some of the midgame chapters, but her bases are only good for a few maps and afterwards she can't really remain a notable combat unit. Their main flaw is how axes aren't a very good weapon type in FE6 and despite the nice promo bonuses you might wanna give the hero crests to some other units or just sell them for extra boots money. Still, mercenary and hero is a good class in FE6, just face a lot of competition from other classes.

    FE7

    • Remember how mercenaries are kinda screwed over by myrmidon in the last game, well now it's the reverse. As heroes get access to axes which means easy 1-2 range against the incredebly weak FE7 enemies. Raven and Harken come with excellent bases which allow them to be notable combat units as soon as they join and they can be useful to deal with some annoying enemies, like the Cog of Destiny Valkyres. However, they are often still left in the dust by your mounted units as while Raven and Harken can kill most things, someone like Heath can also kill everything, but arrive to the enemies sooner, while also providing utility. Again, mercenaries aren't a bad class in this game and are much better than myrmidons this time around, but being swordlocked prepromotion and being infantry locked is still quite bad.

    FE8

    • This time Gerik is our main representative. He joins with solid bases and level 10, so you can early promote him into either a hero or a ranger. Both classes are quite useful, where hero is a more straightforward class which makes Gerik into a strong unit with his 1-2 range axes and maybe even Garm in the lategame, but ranger is also useful for it's mounted utility. While Gerik is a good unit, he can't really keep up with your broken mounted units and is mostly used as a filler combat or utility unit. Hero is also accessible by Ross and Garcia. Berserker is a better class for Ross, but Garcia wants to go into Hero instead of Warrior.

    FE9

    • Hero and Mercenary isn't in this game, but Greil is classified as a Hero, so I'm gonna be covering Ike. Ike is a fairly mediocre unit due to his low bases, swordlock and infantry lock. He does have a nice promotion, but it isn't that notable and he really only become good after he starts using the Ragnell as infinite 1-2 range + 18 might is really good. He is also worth dumping some BEXP on or training a bit for fighting the BK and Ashnard, but he is still a fairly meh unit.

    FE10

    • Ike is once again the only representative of this class, but this time he's much better. He joins with excellent bases and a good personal weapon in the Ettard. He won't be able do double consistently on HM as enemies average around 20 speed at the start, but once he caps strength and skill he can start using BEXP to get speed. He is also a great support partner due to his earth affinity giving avoid. His promotion also doesn't come too late and he can really start abusing the Ragnell again, he does get axes once he promoted into Vanguard, but those are mostly pointless. In this game cavalry units are also not great on quite a few maps, so his average mobility + ledges actually makes him quite mobile as well. Again, his only flaw is his somewhat low speed, but that isn't enough to stop Ike from being an excellent unit in RD.

    FE11

    • Ogma gives a strong first impression as he can double even on H5 at base and has WTA against the numerous earlygame axe users. However, he does somewhat drop off as the game starts introducing more and more lance users, as well as cavalry units against which Ogma doesn't have an effective weapon until he promotes. Hero is a solid class due to it's nice caps and bases. Even a fighter like Barst wants to promote into it due to it's much better speec cap than the warrior class and better growth modifiers. Astram and Samson are also strong units, though they might not be notable for long due to warp allowing for more notable units to allow you to skip the map, along with the polaxe not having the best availability.

    FE12

    • Ogma is once again very notable in the prologue maps, but he and his class kinda fade afterwards. This is due to a lot of competition from other classes, as mercenary and hero do give some nice balanced stats, they don't offer the great speed of the myrmidon, allow you to not face a counterattack like the archer or mount utility. Still, both axes and swords are a good weapon type and the 26 speed cap of the hero is notable as it allows heroes with caps speed, along with a poleaxe and the starsphere in chapter 19 as enemy paladins have around 24 speed there and can be a solid class for more bulk compared to the swordmaster. Still, something like swordmaster has a much better speed cap and gives C in swords which allows promoted unit to use effective weaponry unlike the hero class. Again, this isn't saying that the hero class is bad and it's well rounded stats do have some notable maps where they can shine, they just face a lot of competition from other classes, but that's fairly normal in New Mystery.

    Awakening

    • In this game, Heroes get Sol which is a fairly valuable skill. This is due to Awakening having a lot of route maps later in the game, so Sol allows your units to tank more effectively on EP. Unlike Aether it has a better proc rate and more units can easely access it than they can something similar, like Nosferatu. Still, it isn't 100% reliable and outside of that, you usually wann reclass into something else as axebreaker isn' that valuable, nor are the mercenary skills. Still, Sol is quite a valuable skill.

    Fates

    • They are kind of a meh class here. In CQ Selena usually insta promotes into a bow knight to make chapter 10 easyer and offer some mounted utility, while Laslow is mostly used for his personal skill and maybe reclassed into ninja. In REV there isn't really any moment when you wanna have a mercenary, nor do you ever wanna reclass into in BR as the enemies there are mostly pushovers. Still, there are some fun starts that you can pull with Sol (shoutouts to Zoran) and Xander does like to be Hero in the final few chapters due to the many berserkers in the Hans & Iago chapter which he can handle well due to axebraker and because hero has better caps than paladin. Hero is an OK class for Corrin and Ryoma too due to it's ability to use swords, but aside from Xander in CQ endgame there often isn't too much reason to go into mercenary of hero.

    Echoes: SoV

    • Once again, this class is excellent. Saber and Villager Mercenary are some of the best classes in the game and only kinda drop off in the lategame due to the lack of great combat arts and somewhat not one rounding without forges. Even so dread fighter gives a 7 move and is still a very valuable class overall.
    • Alm is still quite good, but he somewhat drops off in act 3 until his promotion as he falls behind most of the army. Upon promotion he becomes quite good again as he can use the killer bow to get Hunter's Volley and the Royal Sword with Double Lion has it's uses as well. Alm is still quite good, but has more issues which hold him back compared to Gaiden.

    3 Houses

    • This time the main reason to go into mercenary of hero is for vantage. Mercenary gets vantage upon mastery, but is otherwise inferior to thief, while hero gives you innate vantage and defiant strength. Defiant strength is obviously quite gimmicky, but possible with guard adjutants, while vantage benefits units with battalion wrath like Seteth, Alois and Jeritza. Aside from that, ther isn't any reason to be in this class as there are much better classes.

    What makes them bad

Usually it's their more well rounded stats and weapon choice which is as often a blessing as it is a curse. It usually gives them some use in every game, but often times it also makes them fall behind more specialised classes, not to mention how it's combat contributions are often achieved by mounted units. Still, they aren't ever a truly awful class.

What does it take for them to be good

NOTE: Heroes aren't a well defined class overall, so I'm gonna be focusing on the modern sword + axes version. Either axes or swords need to be a good weapon type and the more well rounded nature of mercenaries has to have some utility over something like mounts and swordmasters. I think this is where New Mystery comes in nicely as there are some maps where they have and advanatge over swordmasters, warriors and even paladins and dracoknights. However, it still isn't some kind of centralising class in New Mystery, just a solid one. Aside from that, let's hope that they get better treatement in the next game than they did in 3 Houses.
