I don't think we need gender restricted classes back, but I DO think a good compromise is to instead lock classes based on the culture and occasionally the personal qualities of the unit.

To be honest, I think gender locking classes is just objectively bad, because it can bring up some unfortunate implications on men and women's supposed capabilities, and that's just...not good.

Instead, I propose a compromise to the class lock system, where we instead lock classes based on the CULTURE of the unit.

Let's take a random unit, Warren, for example. Warren is a hunter from Macedon, and is most likely exposed to the general culture of his homeland, even if he is sort of a loner.

Warren may not have any desire to learn magic or become a fancy swordsman, but he can instead have the option to become a wyvern knight, or perhaps a normal archer and sniper, or since he lives in the woods we can have one of his class options be an axe fighter.

Warren would likely have no access to the magical training of Khadein or Archanea or even Altea. Now it's not like there couldn't be a mage in Macedon, it's just that Macedon is primarily a wyvern riding culture, supplemented by smaller units of knights and foot soldiers. Mages are a very low-priority part of their army, whereas Khadein and Archanea (especially the former) would employ more mages since their culture has a higher emphasis on it.

In this sense, a cultural class restriction would make more sense, and everyone wins out!

It avoids implying nigh-offensive statements about how men are good in one thing and women another, it allows for the "unit identity" situation to be used to it's full effect, and it still offers you some interesting variety across the board.

Anyone else agree, or do you perhaps disagree? Discuss!

Edit: I'm going to put something out there right now, I don't think Nintendo or whoever develops fire emblem has some Misogynistic agenda or whatever. Just before someone explodes on me.

Is Fire Emblem Three Houses worth it for someone who doesnt know anything about the series?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:08 PM PST

From what I've seen and heard (which isn't all that much) Three Houses caught my attention and I'm wondering if it's worth it. I generally enjoy RPGs but I've never experienced anything related to Fire Emblem before. Would the game be worth getting and what would be some selling points to it? Thank you!

"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 24: To Wield a Shield

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:01 PM PST

    Chapter 23

Hello, and good evening to everyone. This hasn't been the best day for me, but it's still a Wednesday. So that means, another "What If?" Wednesday, for all who wish to consider gameplay hypotheticals in the world of Fire Emblem. So, here we go.

Across the games of the Fire Emblem series, you have the opportunity to equip your units with various weapons and tomes that they might fight with - as well as staves and items, useful for healing and other effects. But a lesser-seen item type is the Shield. At a certain cost of weight, these tools give the wielder additional defense - and, in some cases, resistance, or bonus skills. While equipping a shield might seem a natural fit for a series regarding warfare, they have only been featured prominently in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (and Gaiden before it) and the latest title, Three Houses.

But what if that weren't the case? What if shields were included as an obtainable item type in previous games in the series? Let's assume that, in games where you can only wield one weapon, a shield takes effect simply by being in one's inventory. To limit defense-stacking, assume only the highest shield in inventory is active. When active, a shield provides appropriate defensive boosts, but at a cost to weight. This cost is calculated in keeping with the game (i.e. in GBAFE, add shield Wt to weapon Wt, then subtract from Con to determine Speed loss). Feel free to draw stats from either 3H or SoV. Assume that a Leather Shield is dropped by an earlygame enemy, while Iron, Steel, and Silver Shields can be bought from Armories that sell Iron, Steel, and Silver weapons, respectively (at comparable price). How would the introduction of Shields change the way you play the game? Which units would you use them on, if any? Would you like to see equippable shields in future games, or do you prefer shields, and defensive stats, to remain intrinsic to certain class identities?

Anyway, thanks for reading. I'll be posting my own thoughts below, in a bit. But I'm very much looking forward to reading yours. Hope this night is a peaceful one for you all, and happy New Year.

Would Byleth bleed if they were injured?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 05:11 PM PST

!! SPOILERS FOR THE END OF CF !! General spoilers for the game in general too, but particularly CF

In replaying Fe3h in order to unlock all of the support conversations, I started thinking about Byleth and any injuries they may receive, since we never see them injured/ bloodied in cutscenes like Jeralt or Nemesis.

We know that Byleth got the Crest stone from Rhea after she moved it from Sitri to them at birth. And since then, they don't express any emotion (initially) or have a heartbeat due to its presence. However, at the end of Crimson Flower, we see the crest stone release its binding on Byleth's heart and they become fully human as Sothis leaves them for good. So assuming that anime logic is at work here and Byleth's body could immediately provide enough blood to course through their body after their heart starts beating again, they would bleed if there was an abrasion of skin.

But would they bleed if the crest stone was still there and their heart never beat? Biologically it wouldn't make sense (obviously) but I'm wondering if in the confines of the Fe3h universe if they would.

Does this question matter? No. Am I still going to ask it because I'm curious anyway? Yep.
