Conquest Lunatic Negative Growths - Chapter 17

Dorias and August. Excellent characters that won't ever be matched in FE again.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 10:44 AM PDT

It's no suprise to anyone that's played all of the Fire Emblem games that Thracia 776's story stands out as one of the best in the series. As such it also contains some of my favourite characters in the game, that being August and Dorias or Dryas as he's known nowadays (but I'll keep calling him Dorias).

    Backstory

August is a former priest of Edda and a tactician. At some point prior to Leif's expedition, August entered the employ of Lewyn, working to orchestrate the liberation of Jugdral; it was under Lewyn's orders that he sought to act as an advisor to Leif. He joined up with Lifis's pirates as part of his attempts to search for Leif, intending to abandon them once he had found him. He achieved his task during a raid on Iz led by Bucks, which Leif and the Fiana Freeblades repelled; once the pirates were defeated, August approached Leif and volunteered to lead him to Lifis's hideout, then travelled with him to Munster. He parted ways with Leif and the Freeblades at Fort Kelbeth, intending to make his own way to Munster from there, but not before revealing his knowledge of Leif's true identity as Leonster's prince.

Dorias was a solider of Leonster and by the year 762 he had managed to achieve the rank of general in the Leonster army despite his relative youth. In the prelude to the battle of River Thracia, Dryas was the only active general who remained behind in the Leonster capital, and so he was present when news returned from the front of King Calf's demise in battle. When news of Thracia's imminent attack on the capital came, Dryas was tasked by Queen Alfiona with working with Finn to ensure her infant grandson, Leif escaped and evaded capture. As part of Alfiona's plan, Dryas and his subordinates split up from Finn, Leif, Lachesis and Nanna and took a different escape route, in order to draw less attention, with the intent of having everybody rejoin Finn's group later.

Throughtout Leif's journey both are recruited by him and serve as Leif's tacticians, each of them even gives Leif a leadership star.

    The dynamic

August and Dorias have an interesting dynamic. Even though they're both capable tacticians that want to help Leif achieve his goals, they have different perspectives. Mainly, August is the more pragmatic one, while Dorias is more focused on chivalry and the like. A lot of people seem to think that August is supposed to be the smart one that's usually right, while Dorias is the one that is weighed down because of his focus on chivalry, however it really isnt' the case. So I don't copy too much from this post (you should read it it's excellent), their dynamic is of two people that have opposite worldviews, but both are still equals. In fact, when both do agree on something you know they're in the right as both are experienced in warfare and agreed on something despite their differences. In the end they do both have respect for each other and reach an understanding.

Dorias: "The prince needs you. I ask you to stay at his side. August, we didn't always see things eye to eye, but we would never have come this far without you. …Please support the prince from now on as well."

    August: "…… …Very well… If you insist."

Ultimately, they don't have any hate for each other, just a difference in opinion, and both are competent. Which is fairly refreshing in FE (even nowadays) where if you're a tactician you're either the starwman that's always right or the super genius that's always right.

    Their flaws

August is shown to care about people, but isn't afraid to use extreme measures to achieve his goals. He joined up with a notorious pirate group in order to have an easier time finding Leif and has an extensive knowledge of torture methods which he taught to Lifis, according to Bucks, who further theorises this to be the reason he was excommunicated from the church. While August did plan to leave the group, he still aided them. He also failed to forsee how the path he suggested had a Loptyr monastery and how the path also had set up several balistas, which made it much harder to conquer the castle.

Dorias is honorable and chivalrous to a fault, but while it's his greatest strength it's also his greatest weakness. Dorias idolised Leonster so much that he even thought that Quan would be the type that would have any mercy against his enemies. And while he has no reservations about criticizing members of other ruling families, he still opnely admired the Friege family for their knightly honor. Dorias expects every soilder to be ready to take the same sacrifices he has when he lost his right arm protecting Leif and cvonsiders losing men for noble causes to be a worthy sacrifice.

Neither Dorias or August are perfect, but they're still good people overall and are necessary for Leif's success at the end of Thracia 776.

Why we likely won't see these types of characters again

While I really like both of them I don't see any similar types of characters coming to FE in the future. That's because of their unique role. In something like 3H we see someone like Hubert whose supposed to be a strategist, be one of the main combat mages of the Empire. But why would Dorias and August fight, that isn't their job, they're supposed to be strategists not soilders, of course they'd hang back and simply direct troops. Another thing is that modern FE is all about building relationships with your playable units and getting to marry them. Considering that Dorias already has a daughter and is likely married, while August is August I don't see them as romancable options. Another thing is that they're both old and anime supermodels that aren't any older than 30 at most.

What I'm trying to say is that in a potential FE5 remake I expect most of their lines to be stolen by the avatar character, like Kris did in FE12.

    Conclusion

Anyway, that's all I have to say about Dorias and August. They're both excellent characters in one of the best written FE games to date and while it's unlikely we'll see anything like them in the near future that in some ways makes them even more unique than they'd be otherwise.

FE7 Redux Tier List Round 4: Serra and Erk

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 12:05 PM PDT

Welcome to Round 4: Serra and Erk

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds, providing full analyses for FE7 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

Last Round resulted in Lyn Mode and Non Lyn Mode Wil in F tier, Lyn Mode Dorcas in D tier and Non Lyn Mode Dorcas in E tier.

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role.

    Includes: Lyn Mode Florina

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

Includes: Lyn Mode Sain, Lyn Mode Kent

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your deployment options to fill out your team. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

    Includes: Florina

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they do work and can become pretty good with investment but do fine without investment. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

    Includes: Sain, Kent

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

Includes: Lyn Mode Lyn, Lyn Mode Dorcas

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

    Includes: Lyn, Dorcas

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Wil

Next Round will be Rath and Nils.
