Why the Lightning Sword is the Best Camus in the Series

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 07:36 AM PST

Everyone loves the Camus archetype. Some honorable enemy who fights the player army despite seemingly having reason to join them. They are all fantastic and nobody dislikes any of them for being hamfisted or poorly written or just plain dumb. However, there is one Camus that rises above all others, and that is the FE15 Lightning Sword. I must specify that this is only on FE15 hard mode, for reasons that will become clear later, so this does not apply to FE2 or FE15 normal mode.

The Lightning Sword is the Jagen of this game. A strong weapon that comes early, it allows your mercenary of choice to ORKO tons of enemies for several maps, and 2RKO almost everything else for a really long time. In addition, since it is a weapon that you give to a growth unit, it doesn't have that caveat for newer players about "stealing exp," so anybody who plays this game is going to use the Lightning Sword. And this weapon really sticks out to people for just how powerful it is early on. The player forms a deep bond with this electric hunk of metal as it carries their mercenary to glory for act 1 and early act 3. It might only have 80 hit, but that's not enough to stop the player from growing attached to the Lightning Sword.

However, halfway through act 3 is where this story takes a darker turn. Enemies begin getting stronger, faster, bulkier, and the Lightning Sword can't keep up anymore since its Mt does not scale. The player does gain access to the forge, but it is in vain! Forging the Lightning Sword is far too expensive compared to other swords like Steel and Silver, and the extra Mt will only take the Lightning Sword so far before the enemy scaling completely overtakes it. Even still, forging a better sword for your mercenary is still taxing on your funds, so the player will have to let go of many of their belongings to get the money for this.

And that is when tragedy strikes. The Lightning Sword is sold for a paltry 25 silver.

Sad, dejected, and alone, the Lightning Sword is gone. It thought the bond it had with the player was special, unbreakable, but now it knows it is only worth a quarter of a gold mark to them. But the player doesn't bat an eye at this, and happily continues to play the game with their mercenary now toting a shiny new Silver Sword. How could I compete with that, the Lightning Sword thinks? My edges are jagged and pointy, my accuracy is worse, and I don't even have a sheath, just a metal holster! And so, the Lightning Sword disappears, hoping to find a new wielder...

As luck would have it, this does not take long. Within a month, the Lightning Sword is taken up by Larry the Dread Fighter! Larry happens to have a stake against the player as well: his younger brothers, the Leather Shield Bros, were murdered in cold blood by the player's mages, so he has trained day and night to be resistant to magic to avenge them. And finally, with his new weapon, he becomes Lightning Larry, Defender of Duma Gate!

Larry and the Lightning Sword, swearing revenge against the player for what they have done, set themselves in the player's path. And when the player finally sees them at Duma Gate, they remember what they have done. The sword that carried them so much early on, the sword that helped their mercenary grow into one of their best units, is now fighting against them! Unlike other Camuses in the series, the connection here is not between the characters in the game, even emphasized by how the Lightning Sword, a weapon used in Alm's army, is now being used against Celica's army. Instead, the connection here is between the player and the game. You, the player, made the decision to sell the Lightning Sword, and now it has come back to haunt you. Taking down Lightning Larry hits the player emotionally more so than any other Camus, and for that reason, it is by far the best one in the whole series.

SoV Tier List Redux Round 7: Luthier and Mathilda

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:19 AM PST

Welcome to Round 7: Luthier and Mathilda

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give Clear Explanations why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds, providing full analyses for FE15 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

Last round resulted in Forsyth in D tier and Python in A tier.

    Tiers Being Used:

Fantastic Performance: S Almost always very useful, with very few to no flaws. They may also provide a valuable niche, or just perform what they do the best.

    Includes Villager Mercenary, Silque

Great Performance: A Very useful alotta the time, with a couple minor detriments that don't really hold them back. They may fill a good niche or perform what they do splendidly.

Includes Mage Tobin, Mage Faye, Villager Archer, Cleric Faye, Clive, Python

Good Performance: B Pretty useful, with some minor detriments that hold them back somewhat. They may fill a niche, but someone might do it better, and they can perform well if given the opportunity.

    Includes Alm

AOK Performance: C Can be useful, with detriments that hold them back. They might fill a niche, even if its not useful, and they can perform decently if given the investment.

Includes Lukas, Mage Gray, Mage Kliff, Clair

Iffy Performance: D Not all that useful, with possible major detriments holding them back. They do not fill any required niches and take more investing than most to perform adequately or not all that solidly.

Includes Villager Cavalier, Villager Soldier, Pegasus Knight Faye, Forsyth

At this point, units are no longer recommended by the list.

Lame Performance: E Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively.

    Includes Mage Atlas

Next Round will be Delthea and Tatiana

Incoherent Badly-Written Opinion Piece: We here focus too much on there being a "right" way of doing things.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 10:56 AM PST

This applies to both story and gameplay elements but for the sake of brevity i'll just talk about gameplay.

I remember a few days ago a thread asking the question of whether it was better for the Lord character to be strong or weak as an unit, and that thread made me think.

Now, this is a topic that, even if i can't remember other specific instances off the top of my head, i do remember it being something that has been asked here in this sub multiple times in the years i've been here.

And the reason i bring that question up is because i view it and the discussion surrounding it as a type of byproduct from a mindset i feel is very common here: The idea that there is a "right" way of doing things.

In general, i feel many people here in this sub when discussing Fire Emblem are a bit too focused on the idea of something being the "best" it can be, and end up looking at individual aspects of Fire Emblem games without looking at the greater picture of the game as a whole. And the reason i have that feeling is precisely because i myself feel very divorced from that mindset, or at least i like to think i am.

    Take Archers, the discussion of how to make Archers better is one that happens pretty often, and you often view varied answers: Some say that we need the game to be more balanced around Player Phase so they can be better; Some say that all they need are actually good bases and that would be enough; Some say that the Gaiden/Three Houses style of them having wider range, including melee range, is the best way of doing it;

Now, what is my take on it? Any of these can work, so long as the game is properly designed around it, any of these suggestions on how to make Archers stronger can work.

And that is i guess what my point is. There is no "right" way of doing things like this, anything can and does work if the game is properly designed around it. And i feel that all of them are things that i would welcome for one simple reason: I want Fire Emblem games to be different from each other. I don't want every new Fire Emblem game to just feel like it's trying to be a better, superior version of the last one.

Of course, good QOL changes and lessons in polishment should remain, but in general, i feel Fire Emblem should not aspire to be one specific thing and one specific thing alone. I want there to be both games with traditional 2-range Archers and games with Gaiden-style Archers; I want games with Dismount and games without Dismount; I want games with weak Lords and games with strong Lords; I want games with infinite range Warp and games with no Warp at all; And so on and so forth.

Of course, when bad balance and bad design get particularly egregious, yes, we should talk about it and think about what makes it egregious. And there is also personal preferences of course, even if there is no "better" way of doing certain aspects we can still prefer certain ways and think of them as superior. But in general i feel we should discard the idea that there is a platonic ideal of any given element of a Fire Emblem game and its implementation, and start addressing these elements less so with a mindset of "How can this work better?" and more so with a mindset of "How can this work better while its implementation remains the same?".

But that's just what i think. How do you feel about it?

Who are the most divisive Fire Emblem characters?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:23 AM PST

When a series has hundreds and hundreds of playable characters, and there are thousands and thousands of people with strong opinions on said characters, it is inevitable that some characters end up very divisive, with many people loving them, and many people hating them. So, which characters do you think are the most divisive, and why?

I don't think it's really a contest at least in recent years that Edelgard is the most divisive (though fortunately that storm isn't quite as bad as it used to be), but there are plenty more. I think it's fair to mention every female lord to be honest. All of them have some pretty harsh critics, although I think 9 times out of 10 the criticisms are entirely overblown.

Soren, Lorenz, Severa. All examples of characters that have a lot of fans, and a lot of people who really can't stand them.
