    An Analysis of Guinevere

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 06:40 PM PST

I started to wonder to myself why I liked Guinevere from Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade so much. Many of the things that get argued about when it comes to liking characters in FE are things like dialogue amount, playability, voice acting, design, etc. And the thing is, Guinevere doesn't have half of that. Yes, she has a lot of dialogue but I am one to argue that the amount of dialogue a character has does not suddenly make them a better character. She's not playable so I can't gush over how she does me good like I do Lance from the same title. Sure, she may have a voice now, but when I originally played FE6 she did not. So really my love for her had to have hinged on the writing. So then I decided I wanted to look into her dialogue and story and see just what made her so endearing to me.

A lot of the time, female leads in Fire Emblem tend to be pretty… underutilized. For instance, Deirdre and Julia are supposed to be the respective leads of their generation but they both end up falling flat and feel more like plot devices than characters. I think Julia maybe does this better since Deirdre's character literally does not go beyond loving Sigurd, but even Julia for most of the game does nothing because of her amnesia. Once she regains her memory though, she can finally be fleshed out and expand on things like her feelings towards her father and brother. But anyway, that's another random write up for another day.

From the very first time she appears in the story, she already has the presence of someone important. The story of FE6 kicks off with Eliwood sending Roy off to war since Bern is acting up. And then in Chapter 2, we are met with a character who claims she is the Princess of Bern. Well, Roy doesn't really question her since she seems like a noble lady to him. She then explains that she left Bern because she wishes to stop her brother in his violent conquest of the continent.

Guinevere: "I want to find a peaceful way to end this war… I figured that if I could speak with someone from Lycia, I would find a solution."

Roy:"Your brother started this war. Is it in your power to stop it?"

Guinevere:"I certainly wish to stop it. …No, it must be stopped."

Roy:"…I see. Very well, I will escort you to the Lycia Alliance Army. We will meet with Lord Hector and see what he thinks about this matter."

    Guinevere:"Honestly…will you take me?"

Roy:"Yes. If there is a possibility to avoid bloodshed and end this war, then I believe that we must try it, no matter how small the chance."

    Guinevere: "Thank you! Thank you…truly."

Even from her first appearance, I can't help but love her conviction. She's characterized as someone who's determined and ready to do what she thinks is right. Even when Roy tells her that it may be dangerous later on, she stays true to her resolve. She's not a combat unit, but even so she truly wishes to stop the war even if that makes her go against her homeland. When she stole the Fire Emblem, she thought that would be enough to stop Zephiel, but in the end it didn't. But did that make her give up? No, instead she decided that she would try and get help from another nation.

    Zephiel:"Bring her to me."

    (Guinevere appears)

    Guinevere:"Zephiel…"

Zephiel:"Guinevere. So good to see you."

Guinevere:"Zephiel, why? Why did you start this war… Why are you killing innocent people?"

Zephiel:"Innocent, you say? Hmph, jealousy, vanity, greed… People have been fighting over such rubbish in any nation. And you call them innocent?"

    Guinevere:"Well…"

Zephiel:"The world must liberated from such pointless things that men fight over. That is the purpose of this war."

Guinevere:"But…people are being brutally killed in the process."

Zephiel:"No radical change can come about without sacrifice."

    Guinevere:"Zephiel…!"

Zephiel:"Guinevere, you are my only sister. Therefore, I will forgive you this time. But not the next. Do you understand?"

    Guinevere:"……"

    3rd Turn

    Guinevere:"Miredy…"

Miredy:"Princess Guinevere, I am glad to see you safe. Now, let us return to Bern on my mount… …Princess?"

    Guinevere:"Miredy!"

Miredy:"Wh-What are you doing!? Please put down that sword before you are hurt!"

    Guinevere:"Miredy, please! Let me go."

Miredy:"! …Should I oblige, what would you do next?"

Guinevere:"…I understand that Roy of the Lycia Alliance Army is near here…"

Miredy:"!? You would join the enemy!?"

Guinevere:"If we don't do something, Elibe will be overrun by Bern's forces… No matter what kind of reasoning my brother gives, what he is doing is obvious. He is forcing others into submission through power. I cannot agree that that will lead to anything good…"

    Miredy:"……"

    Guinevere:"Miredy… Please. Let me go."

    Miredy:"…There is one thing…"

    Guinevere:"?"

Miredy:"There is one thing that I cannot forgive you for, Princess. When you left Bern earlier, why did you not come to consult me…?"

Guinevere:"Well… I thought that your reputation would be damaged, so…"

Miredy:"! Did you think that I would prioritize my reputation above you? I am your loyal knight more than I am a knight of Bern. That has not changed ever since I was knighted."

    Guinevere:"Miredy…"

Miredy:"If you told me to let you go, then I would follow your order with pleasure."

    Guinevere:"Miredy… Thank you."

(Miredy and Guinevere fly towards Roy)

I personally find this scene in Chapter 13 to be particularly an amazing display of Guinevere's character. Here, she is met with her older brother. Do not forget, Guinevere does not hate her brother at all. He was once kind to her and she remembers that kind older brother, but that doesn't stop her resolve at all. Instead, seeing what he's become only strengthens it. We see Zephiel tell her that this is his last time forgiving her, and what does she do right afterwards? She BAILS. To the point where she is willing to raise a sword against her loyal knight in order to get back to Roy and stop Zephiel.

And I also love her little scene with Melady where she tells her she didn't want her reputation to be damaged. But what about her? She's literally the princess of Bern and she's trying to flee to the enemy side. The fact that she's willing to risk her people's trust in order to do what she believes is right just goes to show how strong of a character she is. And the thing is, it's not like she doesn't care that she's going against Bern. She does care. A lot. In fact, she thinks she will be regarded in history as a traitor to her country and yet she still cares so much. Even with her love of her country, she still gives Roy the Fire Emblem straight away when Roy tells her they need to invade Bern but to also promise her not to hurt the civilians.

Guinevere:"My brother…is trying to force the world into submission through power. That is not forgivable, no matter what the reason."

    Roy:"……"

Guinevere:"To stop him, all we can do is defeat the Dragon at his side."

    Roy:"Princess Guinevere…"

Guinevere: "…My name shall be stained in history, as the woman who betrayed her nation."

    Roy:"No…"

Guinevere:"I shall be hated all my life as a traitor. Roy, promise me one thing. When we invade Bern, promise me that you will not harm the civilians…"

    Roy:"I promise. Please trust me."

    Guinevere:"…Thank you."

Roy:"! …We have no choice. We must fight! Merlinus, send Princess Guinevere to the back lines…"

Guinevere: "No. I will stay here. I…must hear their calls. That is all that a…traitor like myself can do…"

Her relationship with Zephiel is also explored pretty well too. During the game, there are about 4 chapters where Roy is trying to get the story of Zephiel out of Guinevere. At first, she hesitates in telling him what happened between Zephiel and their father. And then, she tells the story of Zephiel as they get interrupted over and over again (sorry, I just personally found this funny). At the end, she tells Roy that Zephiel used to be a kind brother and that that was the reason why she believed there was a way to peacefully end the war. Again, this just adds a little bit more character to Guinevere. Her initial hesitation helps to show even more her relationship and regret over her family. While everyone else sees Zephiel as a mad king, she still wanted to believe that he could change. But after everything that's happened, she no longer believes so and asks Roy to stop her brother even if it means killing Zephiel. To me, this just shows how strong she is and shows her development. Before, she was hoping to end the war peacefully, but now she is willing to say goodbye to someone she loves.

And then comes the end to Binding Blade. Now, if you get Roy and Lilina to A support, then Guinevere does not appear in the ending. However, the ending does still revolve around her as it is her crowning ceremony. And also, Roy basically gushes over her before Lilina can even confess to him. Now in the other ending, we are at Guinevere's crowning ceremony and we see our final bit of character from her. And once again, as always Guinevere is true to herself and her resolve is strong. She acknowledges that the people may think she joined with Etruria to seize the throne, but that doesn't stop her from hesitating to say that the most important thing is to rebuild Bern and gain the trust of the people no matter how long it takes.

Now I also want to touch a bit on what I said earlier about her feeling like she's more utilized than other female leads. Does this mean that I think she's more important to the plot than Roy or that FE6 is her story? No, not at all. What I mean is that Guinevere works as a perfect companion to Roy and does not seem like a dead weight at all to him. Yes, she repeatedly apologizes to Roy because she thinks she's a burden to him, but is she actually? She doesn't actually go onto the battlefield most of the time and just stays behind. When she actually gets captured, she doesn't need Roy to save her. She uses her own strength to go back to him.

And something that I think really helps Guinevere compared to other female leads, is that her character doesn't revolve around Roy. Yes, she needs him to stop the war, but her character is more than being impressed by Roy or thinking that she needs Roy to fix her problems. Her strength and resolve have nothing to do with Roy.

You can't remove her from the story either because Roy needs her. He needs the Fire Emblem and Binding Blade and he also wants the answer to why Zephiel is starting the war, all of which he can only get from her.

SoV Tier List Redux Round 6: Forsyth and Python

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:21 PM PST

Welcome to Round 6: Forsyth and Python

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give Clear Explanations why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds, providing full analyses for FE15 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

Last round resulted in Clive in A tier and Clair in C tier.

    Tiers Being Used:

Fantastic Performance: S Almost always very useful, with very few to no flaws. They may also provide a valuable niche, or just perform what they do the best.

    Includes Villager Mercenary, Silque

Great Performance: A Very useful alotta the time, with a couple minor detriments that don't really hold them back. They may fill a good niche or perform what they do splendidly.

Includes Mage Tobin, Mage Faye, Villager Archer, Cleric Faye, Clive

Good Performance: B Pretty useful, with some minor detriments that hold them back somewhat. They may fill a niche, but someone might do it better, and they can perform well if given the opportunity.

    Includes Alm

AOK Performance: C Can be useful, with detriments that hold them back. They might fill a niche, even if its not useful, and they can perform decently if given the investment.

Includes Lukas, Mage Gray, Mage Kliff, Clair

Iffy Performance: D Not all that useful, with possible major detriments holding them back. They do not fill any required niches and take more investing than most to perform adequately or not all that solidly.

Includes Villager Cavalier, Villager Soldier, Pegasus Knight Faye

At this point, units are no longer recommended by the list.

Lame Performance: E Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively.

    Includes Mage Atlas

Next Round will be Luthier and Mathilda
