[Language of the Emblem] Announcing the Bilingual Script from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 01:55 PM PST

I'm proud to announce that the Bilingual Script os finally complete! This file contains not only the full Japanese + English script for dialogs and narration, but also for class description (from the intro), some menus, death quotes and dialogs from shops, armories etc. I used the official localization released for the Switch on December 2020. This aims to help people that are interested in the localization process, as well as Japanese students, or simply curious people that like FE and/or Japanese stuff.

The page containing the files is here. If you want to check the script directly, there are two versions:

Making this was a lot of work, since I had to fetch text pieces from all over the internet. Also, I had to play a good amount of the game myself just to get a few lines here and there (looking at you, Elice's death quote). I also had some help from reddit as well. Check the last page of the document for a full list of references.

This is mostly a single-man work. If you spot any error, be it a typo or any incorrect information, please repport the problem to me, through any way you find more conveninent (reply here, DM me, use the website's Contact form...). I'll be very happy to make corrections and improve this work.

"Hey, why are you putting so much effort into making something no one askied for?"

Because I love Fire Emblem, I love Japanese, and I love to teach Japanese (and stuff in general). Also, making textbooks and whatnot is something I really enjoy doing. It's like a hobby. It's relaxing for me.

I also updated some other things from the Japanese Vocabualary from FE01 as well.

The next entry for the Language of the Emblem project is...

    ... a complete Katakana method!

If you always wanted to learn katakana (one of the Japanese writing systems), you'll be able to do it using Fire Emblem, with a somewhat gamified method. (It's not a game; it's a pdf; but's becoming very very interesting... would you like to check a few chapters even before it's done?)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TL;DR: I love FE and I made a bilingual script for FE01. Also, katakana method coming at some point.

If the "Monastery gameplay" returns in future games, how would you improve it?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:19 PM PST

This is something I'm wondering about, since it seems like on the whole people are fairly negative on it. In my opinion there are three big changes that would greatly improve it.

    1. Breaking it up into smaller chunks: For me, part of what made the monastery get boring after a while was that once you figured out what you liked doing every month you just did that over and over. I think that breaking up the gameplay so that the exploration is more like a five or ten minute break between each day or battle or whatever. My idea for this is that you might be able to do one activity (like sharing a meal or the bathhouse in 3H) per exploration session, so this way you wouldn't be running around the exact same area for hours on end.

    2. Making the different activities actually worth doing: This ties into what I said before. In 3H you always just do the same thing every month for most of the game. As most people know spamming the dining hall is probably the simplest and most effective way to use your time in the monastery, so I think trying to stop that would be good. There are two ways of going about this, either by forcing players to do something else or providing better incentives to do other things. Most people would probably agree the latter is the better option, but either way I think this would be a beneficial change.

    3. Options to let people skip the Monastery without losing out on the rewards: Normally I'm of the opinion that adding in an option to skip a large section of gameplay is indicative of that gameplay being poor (or at least in major need of work), but with some tweaks I do think the monastery stuff could be good. The main reason I think it should be skippable/automatable is because of existing FE fans. I don't really like the idea that people might be kept from enjoying a game because of a new addition to the series that radically changes things, so I think having a way to skip the monastery entirely would be good for those who want. Since it does provide a lot of utility (in 3H at least) being able to just automate its functions would be a good option to have.

I'm interested to see what other ideas people have for the monastery gameplay. I won't be too sad if it's cut entirely from the next game but as is obvious by now I think it does have potential, so hopefully they'll refine it for the next game if they do keep it.

SoV Tier List Redux Round 2: Mage Kliff, Mage Tobin, Mage Gray, Mage Faye and Mage Atlas

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:24 PM PST

Welcome to Round 2: Mage Kliff, Mage Tobin, Mage Gray, Mage Faye and Mage Atlas

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give Clear Explanations why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, with links to each and every one of these rounds, providing full analyses for FE15 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

Yesterday's round resulted in Alm B tier and Lukas C tier

    Preliminary Round

Class Base Stats and Promoted Class Base Stats

This round we will only be tiering the villagers if they were in the mage class. I specified this since each villager as a mage is pretty different from each other so saying just villager mage isn't really representative. Since for example mage Tobin is pretty different from say mage Gray.

    Tiers Being Used:

Fantastic Performance: S Almost always very useful, with very few to no flaws. They may also provide a valuable niche, or just perform what they do the best.

Great Performance: A Very useful alotta the time, with a couple minor detriments that don't really hold them back. They may fill a good niche or perform what they do splendidly.

Good Performance: B Pretty useful, with some minor detriments that hold them back somewhat. They may fill a niche, but someone might do it better, and they can perform well if given the opportunity.

    Includes Alm

AOK Performance: C Can be useful, with detriments that hold them back. They might fill a niche, even if its not useful, and they can perform decently if given the investment.

    Includes Lukas

Iffy Performance: D Not all that useful, with possible major detriments holding them back. They do not fill any required niches and take more investing than most to perform adequately or not all that solidly.

At this point, units are no longer recommended by the list.

Lame Performance: E Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 12:19 PM PST

Welcome to Round 2: Lukas and Genny!

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations on why. Preliminary round

The results from the last round are Alm C and Celica A

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Rules:

1.) Be respectful to each other. Feel free to debate, question, and corroborate any other voters, but do please be kind to each other when doing so.

2.) Hair accessories can be taken into consideration when voting on a unit.

    3.) Facial hair counts too

4.) Only counting SoV, not Gaiden and the hair characters in those games have

5.) Some of the antagonists and side characters will be rated as well

6.) Valbar won't be rated as his hair is too bad to be rated even when he doesn't wear a helmet

7.) Each vote must have an explanation along with it

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Without Further Ado, let's begin

    Lukas

    Genny

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tiers being used:

Fantastic hair: S Just really great hair. Either looks good or pulls off a unique look very well.

Great hair: A Above average hair but falls below the juggernauts of Fantastic hair. Can be a unique design that falls on one or two merits.

    Includes: Celica

Good hair: B Slighty above average hair. Either a style that works or a unique style that has a few notable merits.

Average hair: C Average hair. Either very average hair or a unique style that doesn't really add or detract.

    Includes: Alm

Bad hair: D Poorly done hair or a unique style that falls flat.

Valbar tier: F This tier is for Valbar and units that somehow have hair of equally awful quality

Thoughts on the trial maps from fe6 and fe9?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:46 PM PST

I don't see people talk about trial maps too often, I am currently re-playing fe9 again and I remembered that the game had them, and wanted to know what other people thought about them.

I have always seen them as a cool bonus for beating the game, and it is fun being able to use your endgame team for a few final challenges. It's also pretty cool that they allow you to use some major story and enemy characters after completing the game enough times.

Another question I want to ask is has anyone ever unlocked all of the trial map characters for either game? I believe it takes 15 playthroughs of fe9 to unlock all of the characters which is monumental, l would love to hear if anyone has ever accomplished it.
