What are you biggest wishes/fears for Genealogy Remake?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 04:21 PM PDT

E3 is coming and I have hopes for a FE announcement there and if Naga permits it will be a FE4 remake, but that made me wonder, what you guys(and gals) want for the remake? I want to see other people opinion so I will just drop 2 things

Wish: They remove Pursuit and let people double normaly, or use Pursuit to make >1AS double in place of the normal >4AS.

Fear: Avatar basicaly replacing Oifey, I really don't mind a Avatar if they make it right but everytime I think of it I fear for Oifey, his position is literaly perfect to fit a Avatar, kid helping Sigurd in gen 1, Unit in gen 2(And can marry everyone)

    oh no i'm old

    oh yeah

it's that time of year again

I've been stuck at home for 3 out of the last 4 May 19s. The other one was when I was on campus for a summer semester and met another person who was into Fire Emblem, which was terrifying. I bought this game at the end of first year and now I've graduated (probably). Life comes at u fast

Also still my favourite FE soundtrack and my second favourite FE game with Clive in it

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon Merciless Mode LTC Chapter 1

    Posted: 19 May 2021 10:51 AM PDT

    Link

This will be a full recruit run since I noticed no one has done a full recruit run with growths for this game while still allowing for other important mechanics. I don't plan on rigging growths since most turn saves don't require it however I'm not anti rigging growths unless it's some like a perfect level on Jagen so some units may end up better than average but it shouldn't be a big deal. There are some notable turn saves that require a lot of rigging that I won't be performing in this run (reliability is really bad :/) such as the fact that this map is theoretically 6 turned. The main goal of this run is to save some extra turns missed by Dondon's 0% run, show off growth strategies for various situations, and try and improve reliability when possible. I'll also be using some underrated units for flavor.

This chapter is probably the worst in the game. It's long, hit rates aren't great, and there are no save points. We also don't have any way of healing out units other than putting them on forts so we need to make sure we are spreading out damage whenever possible. Cain uses a Lance on this map 5 times but three of those times were unreliable and not needed. I wasn't sure if Cain would need those hits at a later point when I started the run but it turns out he doesn't and can still reach D rank without it.

The boss strategy is kinda gross and only has around a 25% chance of success but it's the only way to finish the map in 7 turns. It relies on Gazzak rolling down on speed so that he doesn't double Abel and rolling down on Strength so he doesn't kill Jagen. As mentioned this map can be completed in 6 turns with Wrys recruited but you have to skip the gold at the start which would severely hurt reliability later in the run and also require some critical hits or dodges to happen this chapter.

    Overall CoS ~8.6%

    New Units:

Marth - Everyone by this point knows SD Marth isn't a great unit. The main thing about Marth is he has supports with a huge chunk of the cast and since Marth is always deployed he'll always be building those supports especially with good units. Marth is usually just a walking lose condition that you have to lug to thrones.

Caeda - One of the games best units. She is kinda mediocre in the first three maps but as soon as forging becomes available and the game stops throwing axes at us she easily becomes the games best unit. Her speed is also incredibly good and she can't miss speed procs more than 2 times in a row thanks to dynamic growths so having high speed on her is practically guaranteed.

Jagen - Another great units. Early on Jagen has annoyingly bad hit rates with the Silver Lance and doesn't do enough damage with the Iron sword but he's still the best unit during those maps. After reclassing becomes available Jagen always ends up having a niche and never falls off due to being prepromoted in the A class set and having a good lance rank. He's honestly just a really fun unit to use because he never feels broken but the job he does, he does well.

Cain - One of the most underrated units in the game. Part of the goal of this run when I started out was to see how unreliable it really was to fix Cain's Lance rank. It turned out that Cain can reach D lances by chapter 6 without taking risks at all. In a slower run he could likely get his lance rank up much faster. Cain will end up getting used quite a lot in this run so rejoice Cain enjoyers.

Abel - Abel has some interesting benefits compared to Cain. He loses one strength but takes on 1 speed instead and starts with D lances. Javs aren't too important when LTCing since their hitrates suck but his ability to use them does help him out in at least one map before Cain gets there. Overall he's probably the better unit and although he won't have kills fed to him like Cain he'll still get used about as much early on.

Gordin - Gordin it like that unit who sucks but also is good to have for a bit so you can't get too mad at him. In the early maps bows don't face weapon triangle disadvantage so they end up having acceptable hit rates and not taking counters is also helpful for setting up kills. His stats are so bad though that even if he got levels he wouldn't be good long term.

Draug - Like Gordin but worse. The biggest combat contributions Draug makes are in this chapter. We don't really want to use him though because Lance hitrates suck. In the next two maps he's more noteworthy as an extra body than a combat unit.

Wrys - Everyone's favorite bald man. Since he is the only staff user for several maps and reclassing isn't available he gets a head start on most other possible staff bots. He's got one big use a little ways into the game but we aren't going to be training him the C staves like other runs because there are cheaper candidates.

Shinon: Sharp Tongue, Sharper Bow. (Character Analysis!)

    Posted: 19 May 2021 11:15 AM PDT

Ah Shinon, The ol racist sniper in PoR with horrible bases, who leaves Daein for basically just "Fuck you, Ike." or in Radiant Dawn, when he decides to become a pretty solid unit.
But behind his blatant racism (and awfully rude remarks), there's actually some brilliance behind (It's basically the literal definition of diamond in the rough) Shinon's character that's pretty interesting to cover. I'll start by giving some rough coverage on his supports in PoR.

Gatrie - These two just shit around with each other and it's pretty funny. The whole dynamic is just Gatrie failing to get girls while Shinon attempts to help him while making fun of him, there's nothing too groundbreaking to find in this support though. It is good to note that Shinon told Gatrie to get the money back because Shinon was fully aware that Gatrie got scammed. Which does show at least some level of caring for Gatrie.

Janaff - The C support is them being very nice to each other, with Shinon calling Janaff a "ignorant half-breed." The start of the B support goes into something a lot more interesting though.
After Janaff mentions that Shinon betrayed the Greil Mercenaries, Shinon gets incredibly defensive over it. Saying that he is a "True Mercenary" making Janaff incredibly confused, he asks Shinon what he fights for. Shinon responds with "I fight to live." This is pretty sensible, (right after this statement he says that they make weapons to protect themselves from Laguz to specify.) This mentality will come back later, especially when he teaches Rolf his ways.
In the A support, he does actually say his reason for hating Ike,
"I've always hated Ike. He gets everything handed to him and takes it all for granted."
Janaff mentions that Ike can't really help that, and to that Shinon's counterargument is "I do it because I feel like it."
At the end of the support, it does seem like Shinon has warmed up to Janaff a little bit, asking to talk to him a bit more.

Rolf - The support starts by Shinon heavily criticizing Rolf's bow that Rolf made out of some crappy wood. Shinon offers to help, progressing into the B support, where Shinon takes the bow that Rolf made, just to go throw it away in the A support.
These all seem like quite critical ways to train your pupil, keep in mind that Rolf genuinely takes all of Shinon's advice, and looks at him as a family member basically. Shinon justifies throwing away the bow by saying that the bow would have killed Rolf if he even tried using it in battle.
Rolf then speaks of how Shinon, teaching him how to shoot a bow has been his only real outlet for freedom, and he would hate to just stay at home and just watch the war happen.
Shinon, despite clearly being a really rough teacher, sympathizes with Rolf
He tells rolf that adults would rather do anything then resort to sending kids into the battlefield, as kids shouldn't have to deal with the guilt of killing someone.
"The fear of being responsible for a death is always in the back of our minds, so we try to lessen the guilt as much as possible." (This may also explain why Shinon has a conversation where he is absolutely plastered, as that might be one of his ways to deal with this guilt, although this is just speculation.)
"Humans... most humans...feel the pain of others. Holding that back is a lot harder than you think."
Shinon is disgusted by the fact that kids have to go to war in any capacity, as he thinks they should keep their innocence as long as they can. He actively hates adults, for their pride. It's implied the real reason that Shinon taught Rolf all of this is so Rolf could survive. (It's also noted in the chapter 18 conversation where Rolf can fight Shinon, that Shinon's training has all been done in secret - Ike never knew about Shinon's training of Rolf until a base conversation in Radiant Dawn - Also to note that Shinon gives Rolf some praise for "actually looking like an archer.")
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Radiant Dawn as commonly known, abolishes support conversations, but there are a couple base conversations to cover that also helps flesh out Shinon a little bit more. (Also I know that there is a conversation with Gatrie and Shinon where Gatrie flirts with Lyre, but that doesn't really tell anything that the Gatrie support doesn't.)
"Shinon." (What a subtly named base convo)
The only thing really to note in this conversation is that Ike knows that Shinon enjoys being in the Greil Mercenaries. Now if Ike's view is actually correct or not is to be determined, but is interesting to note.

    "Master and Pupil."
This is the main thing that Radiant Dawn does for Shinon's characterization. Shinon does best when he's with Rolf. It's his most human-self.
"You've been running around camp with that silly grin plastered on your face, but I can tell all the fighting's wearing you down. I can't help you get a good night's sleep, or make sure you eat your vegetables, but I can see you're using a decent bow."

This is interesting mainly because it shows that Shinon cares about Rolf enough to be able to read his emotions when it comes to fighting in battle constantly.
Shinon gives Rolf the biggest gift that he'd want. A handcrafted bow by the Shinon himself. He repeats the fact that he really doesn't get war, and that he doesn't want Rolf having to dig his grave.
Shinon: Did I ever ask you to pay me back? Did I ever tell you my help had any strings attached? No! Kids should be kids and just learn from their elders!
This goes into a bit more of Shinon's mindset with kids. He doesn't want Rolf to think of all of these big things that come in with the adult life. He just wants Rolf to learn from him so that Rolf can protect himself. It's as simple as a deal of that.

Rolf: But-- Shinon: If you want to pay me back, then be better than me!
Shinon: "Doesn't matter if it's using a bow or making one. Just do it better. Then I can point at you and tell people "That's the best student I ever had."
He actively wants Rolf to surpass him. That's the thing that all good mentors want. On some days the mentor will be surpassed by the student. This gives Rolf a very solid motivation to go forward and keep learning. It's very simple, but adds a small layer of complexity to his character. Through this super harsh, super blunt teaching, he does genuinely care for Rolf.
These kinds of characters have always been some of my more favorite Fire Emblem characters. The Fire Emblem characters that aren't just inherently kind or nice. Shinon still isn't a great person, but his caring for Rolf's survival and the slightest understanding of Laguz at the end of the Janaff support is what helps make him still human. He isn't just a terrible human, he's an asshole that has been made by his philosophy of "Fight to Survive." That to me is what makes an interesting Fire Emblem character.

FE9 Redux Tier List Round 21: Elincia, Nasir and Ena

Oh man, Elincia's Awakening redesign sure was something

Welcome to Round 21: Elincia, Nasir and Ena

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, providing full analyses for FE9 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

    Rules:

    • The game is played somewhat efficiently. No grinding, boss abuse, etc.
    • The game is played on the NA Hard version
    • Killing enemies quickly is good. Killing enemies slowly is bad. Anything that results into either of these directions, be it high offensive or defensive stats, movement, 1-2 range, availability, etc is fair game. Finishing chapters quickly is cool too.
    • Personality and other story-related things do not matter. Sorry, everyone's a robot.
    • All characters are recruited. Recruitment cost is thus a non-issue.
    • This is not an LTC playthrough, so there's no need to go that extreme. But it's not a completionist one either.
    • Supports are acknowledged as a part of the character's viability
    • Votes must have an explanation with them. I'm not asking for a paragraph but the bare minimum is a sentence or two describing why you're putting X unit into Y tier. If you do not put an explanation under your votes, your vote shall not be counted
    • When it comes to resources like BEXP, characters are tiered with how well they make use of possible resources, if they have other competition for said resources and how well they perform without them. Arguments as to why a certain units deserves investment are important.
    • Be respectful

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role. The game changes substantialy when these units are sidelined.

    Includes: Titania, Marcia, Jill, Reyson

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

    Includes: Oscar, Kieran, Tanith

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your deployment options to fill out your team. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

Includes: Ike, Boyd, Soren, Rhys, Ilyana, Mist, Mordecai, Volke, Astrid, Makalov

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they do work and can become pretty good with investment but do fine without investment. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

Includes: Lethe, Stefan, Muarim, Calill, Haar, Geoffrey

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

Includes: Gatrie, Zihark, Tormod, Janaff, Tauroneo, Largo

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

Includes: Shinon, Mia, Nephenee, Sothe, Devdan, Ulki, Ranulf, Bastian

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Rolf, Brom, Lucia

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next round will be a special round for the last three laguz royals.

"What If?" Wednesday, Chapter 34: Earning Your Wings

    Posted: 19 May 2021 05:26 PM PDT

    Chapter 33

What's up? It's Wednesday. So, it's as good a time as any for another speculative gameplay discussion.

Fliers have shown up in every title in the Fire Emblem series. Typically riding on the back of a pegasus or wyvern, they are most notable for their high movement, and ability to cross nearly any terrain. This ability comes at a cost, however - they suffer a weakness to bows (and sometimes wind magic), and while they can traverse any terrain, they do not receive defensive or avoid benefits that grounded classes get from terrain. In some games, they are particularly blessed at Rescuing allies, or have the ability to Canto away. The power of flight tends to be limited to a handful of classes, usually wielding melee weapons. Staves are rare; bows and tomes, even rarer.

But what if this limitation were not in place? What if there were an equippable, or inventory-held item, that granted its bearer flying mobility? I'll call this item the "Wings". Assume that the other effects of flying mobility (weakness to bows, loss of terrain boosts, Canto where it exists, flier Aid formula where relevant) occur - however, the Wings would not boost the Move stat in its own right. Like a Hoplon Guard, the Wings can be traded or discarded - however, only one will be available in the game. Any unit can equip it, including those with flying mobility (but they will receive no effect from it). Were the Wings available to you, how would you make use of them? Do you imagine such an item having a big impact on gameplay, or serving as a mere novelty? Are you a fan of the idea of equippables that can affect movement type, or would those overly blur the distinctions between classes?

Let me know what you think in the comments below! I'll be sharing my own, too. Thank you for reading, and have a great day.

A Tellius prequel would be awesome

    Posted: 19 May 2021 02:19 PM PDT

The Tellius games are easily my favorites in the series, and I realized in a recent playthrough that there's a ton of really interesting lore that didn't get a chance to shine in either game.

Particularly, the war between the two goddesses a thousand years before the events of the games. I think that a game based around the 3 heroes we hear about: Altina, Soan, and Deghinsea and their war with Yune would be awesome to play through.

They could even make it in the style of more recent games like Awakening or Three Houses, in the sense that they could make it more personal and character-driven, really building out the relationships between the characters (something that Tellius admittedly lacks). Plus we could get some nice parallels between the racial relations between beorc and laguz, there's a lot of potential there.

I just think this is a really cool idea that both could appeal to newer audiences and give older fans a taste of the older games. What do you guys think?
