Why do people believe a Genealogy remake would be "toned down?"

    Posted: 16 May 2021 12:36 PM PDT

Like, Mercedes's support with Jeritza in Three Houses covers a very similar set of themes to what you see in Genealogy, and it doesn't exactly beat around the bush with the implications either. It's not like they actually show you the stuff happening onscreen or anything. Personally if I was an FE4 fan I'd be much more concerned about the inevitable new characters they're going to add to the story, since that's a consistent thing they did with the remakes. Maybe they will be better received than Kris and Conrad were?

The difference in how Hetzel and Xander are portrayed despite their similarities is fascinating

    Posted: 16 May 2021 07:04 AM PDT

    Hello chaps.

So, let's get this out of the way first: Xander is young, hot, playable, and has a buttery smooth, dark voice in Japanese while Hetzel is an old man not important enough to be the main boss in the chapter you fight him in.

However, despite having seemingly nothing in common on the surface, they're both characters who uphold the status quo even when they shouldn't. Hetzel is too afraid to go against the Begnion Senate and Xander doesn't defy Garon. Both are part of a system in which they enable some awful people despite seemingly knowing better.

The interesting part is that Xander is portrayed as a tragic figure, someone who is worthy of sympathy and understanding, despite waging war against an innocent nation, while Hetzel is seen as someone who can be killed without much consideration.

However, unlike Xander, Hetzel never takes an active role in everything awful the Senate does, and he tries in his own cowardly way to make amends, like when he freed Rafiel. He has little in terms of personal power and is, compared to Xander, not as high up in the food chain.

Xander, on the other hand, is a crown prince with an in-universe high power level and a legendary sword. He's even got faithful and powerful allies in his siblings.

Both of these characters have multiple opportunities to defy the people above them and do what they know is right, and both fail to do so. In Birthright, Xander does not even grant Elise's dying wish to stop fighting, and in the other two routes it takes contrivances on a comedic level for him to turn, and in Conquest that happens in the penultimate chapter, after Hoshido has been devastated.

In Birthright, it's supposed to be sad when he dies, while in Conquest it's supposed to be a "hell yeah" moment when he finally turns against anime satan.

Now, I'm sure some people would raise the question of Xander even having the ability to defy Garon; maybe he would've just been executed on the spot if he didn't comply? Well, his personal power and allies aside, we saw him fighting back against Iago and Hans even before turning his back on Garon in Conquest. Regardless, whether or not you believe Xander had the ability to fight back, defect, or defy orders, it doesn't change the fact that the games themselves portray him as heroic despite being anything but, and Hetzel, who might've been targeted by the Senate if he went against them, is portrayed as a coward.

The portrayal is really what counts in the end. Whether or not they could, did they want to? Hetzel is a coward and is called out for it. Xander is a hero for coming to his senses long after he should have.

FE9 Redux Tier List Round 18: Ranulf and Haar

Why Ike was banned from Twitter

Welcome to Round 18: Ranulf and Haar

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, providing full analyses for FE9 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

The results from the last round are Calill C and Tauroneo D

    Rules:

    • The game is played somewhat efficiently. No grinding, boss abuse, etc.
    • The game is played on the NA Hard version
    • Killing enemies quickly is good. Killing enemies slowly is bad. Anything that results into either of these directions, be it high offensive or defensive stats, movement, 1-2 range, availability, etc is fair game. Finishing chapters quickly is cool too.
    • Personality and other story-related things do not matter. Sorry, everyone's a robot.
    • All characters are recruited. Recruitment cost is thus a non-issue.
    • This is not an LTC playthrough, so there's no need to go that extreme. But it's not a completionist one either.
    • Supports are acknowledged as a part of the character's viability
    • Votes must have an explanation with them. I'm not asking for a paragraph but the bare minimum is a sentence or two describing why you're putting X unit into Y tier. If you do not put an explanation under your votes, your vote shall not be counted
    • When it comes to resources like BEXP, characters are tiered with how well they make use of possible resources, if they have other competition for said resources and how well they perform without them. Arguments as to why a certain units deserves investment are important.
    • Be respectful

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role. The game changes substantialy when these units are sidelined.

    Includes: Titania, Marcia, Jill, Reyson

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

    Includes: Oscar, Kieran, Tanith

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your deployment options to fill out your team. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

Includes: Ike, Boyd, Soren, Rhys, Ilyana, Mist, Mordecai, Volke, Astrid, Makalov

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they do work and can become pretty good with investment but do fine without investment. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

    Includes: Lethe, Stefan, Muarim, Calill

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

Includes: Gatrie, Zihark, Tormod, Janaff, Tauroneo

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

Includes: Shinon, Mia, Nephenee, Sothe, Devdan, Ulki

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Rolf, Brom

Rise Eterna 4/4 - I gave a copy of Rise Eterna to the Pope

    Posted: 16 May 2021 08:07 AM PDT

Before I talk about the last 2 units we get in the run, I want to mention the music. Or, the lack thereof. This game has about 3 songs, including, I shit you not, a single battle theme. You hear this tune in the first map, you hear it in the last battle. There's also about 1 cutscene song, a jaunty tune that I know you can't hear, but I want you to imagine an upbeat tune playing in the background as I describe some of these scenes later on.

    Ok, unit review time:

The first is Cilphen, another old soldier friend of Nath's who apparently betrayed him, along with Nath's old soldier lady lover, both of them who defected to the enemy empire. Cilphen is another armor knight-type with good HP regen options, in a game with no enemy phase. He does get a 25% chance of counter-attacking if an adjacent ally is attacked... but not if he's attacked. And that implies that you're slowing down an ally so Cilphen can keep up with his 6 movement. At a phase in the game where you win by touching the exit square. In a game where there's no incentive to go slow and kill the enemies or gather materials at this point ... yeaahhh.

Lastly we get Eana, who, surprise, is actually good. She's a dancer! Granted, a dancer who only has 3 chapters left in the game to be used, but a dancer who can dance all adjacent allies at once, Heron-style. She also gives them all atk and def buffs, and can move herself again after dancing (but can't dance again) to get herself out of harm's way, if there theoretically were any harm in any way in this game. I gave her all my boots for fun, and she ended up with 13 mov. Incredible.

Now unless I've missed anyone, I've covered 12 units by now, and the game advertises 14... what gives? Well, those 2 would be Jachim and Zephiriel. I know their names only because they're mentioned in Sachel's skills. I never unlocked them. Since I got Sachel by replaying an old stage, I assume these 2 are the same, but they never showed up when I tried. I suspect, instead of skimming old stages to try and trigger an event, I have to actually complete X number of old stages (recall how they all change to kill-all-enemies on replay). Maybe these 2 characters are really good and have interesting kits, but they cannot be worth it if this is the case, sorry. And if that's not how you get them, I truly have no idea, there's no point in the game where I had a choice or anything I could do much different.

What's curious, though, is that this game has a code input option at the title screen. And if random steam users are to be taken at their word (They're not, they enjoy this game, I cannot trust them on anything) beating the demo would get you a code that could unlock Sachel on the steam version (but not on Switch, according to one frustrated user). The full steam version isn't even out yet, so maybe they just mean the demo? Either way it raises the possibility that it's just some random code to get these 2 characters, and given that in the post-game you're locked out of some stuff that might've been crucial in unlocking these 2 characters even if they're not code-based ... yeah fuck that I'm not wasting time scouring stages trying to find these two any longer, only for somebody to tell me I had to use the Konami code or whatever.

Oh, by the way, we kill the pope. We demand answers from him, but when he starts trying to explain that he didn't know what the sisters went through in that lab, we decide we don't like his explanation very much and kill him. It's actually hilariously easy, he's not sitting up on a throne in the back of a castle or anything, he's just sitting within 1 turn kill range at the start of the map, all we have to do is escape after we kill him.

Except we find out later he was right, he really didn't know about the experiments, the Pope was actually on our side against the evil empire, and the girls do actually feel bad about killing him. Our heroes, ladies and gentlemen. We killed hundreds of innocent villagers in 3 different towns, hundreds of "evil" imperial soldiers who are just trying to stop this known band of village-destroyers from destroying the next village, and now we've killed the Pope who wasn't actually evil like in most other JRPGs.

Heroes can make mistakes, of course. But, so can game designers. I'll let you decide which of the two you think this story is about.

And I'm wondering... did Seevan know we'd kill the pope? Or did he think we'd have a nice chat? If the girls are mad at the pope for all this, shouldn't they also be mad at Seevan? He obviously knew what had happened to the girls, but did he have their best interests in mind, or was he just trying to manipulate them into killing the pope? Whose side was Seevan on? The truth is ... doesn't matter, he's not a character anymore, never mentioned again, MOVING ON.

The pope's not the final boss, though. Next we have to kill Nathael's old lady lover who betrayed him for the empire, sending him spiraling into the life of banditry we find him in at the start of the game. In this emotional, tense fight, we outsmart this woman by... never opening the door to the room she's locked herself in and easily chunking her down with Sothy.

This map DOES have a lot of other enemies, but they're all locked behind side doors leading to locked chests because yes please Rise Eterna, I'm definitely going to waste my time on your shitty crafting system with only 2 maps left in the game.

After beating this map, the game will appear to freeze for 3 minutes. Don't close it, go get a coffee and come back to find that the game was struggling to load ... a JPEG. But not just any JPEG, a JPEG of Nathael dying. Yeah, he's actually dead. I want to give Rise Eterna some credit for actually permanently killing off a playable main character, which is more balls than a lot of FE games have.

But then I have to immediately refund that credit, because what the fuck this comes out of nowhere and makes no sense and follows from absolutely nothing. I know it seems like I'm speeding through this development, but legitimately I think if we were to count words, this paragraph has more text than his death scene. I don't even know, or at least remember, how he dies. He's just kinda randomly wounded.

I've heard some speculation since writing my initial draft, that people believe this might be a Bad End. I agree, but where our opinions diverge is in the idea that consequently there must be a Good End, and that this Bad End is not simply the natural result of a Bad Story.

Anyway, Lua is sad and angry now. And I'm sad and angry, because Nath takes all his premium gems and inventory with him when he dies. Time to get some payback on the last boss, General Nobody. He's not the evil emperor or anything, and he's never been mentioned before now, but killing him will ... maybe mildly inconvenience the empire until they can send someone else out to govern the army here. Yay.

Anyway, I pump all my remaining stat-boosters into a pissed-off Lua before entering the last map. She's a god of destruction now, over-killing the basic bitch enemies this game tosses at you like she has for hours now, but this time with even bigger damage numbers. And now she takes 0 damage from anything, even if hypothetically she didn't have 100% vantage and killed them first. And her crit rate is through the roof, not that she ever needs it. Her health is bloated and gargantuan, too, not that it isn't always full.

Pumped with busted skills and raw gem power, swearing vengeance for Natheal, Lua approaches to door to the small room the final boss has locked himself away in, and opens the door to find...

General Nobody's corpse lying on the ground, surrounded by his very confused-looking elite guard, his body full of arrows Sothy had shot him with ages ago, from another ZIP code.

The end, GG no re. Hell no re.

The game ends with our 5 magical Captain America sisters going off to do... something or other to stop the evil empire. I think. Because the game also says "This was the end of their journey", which apparently it isn't, if you're telling us what they did next. But then the game says, I shit you not, something like "But it's not about the destination, it's about the journey."

Oh, ok. OK. It's not about the destination, the part where we actually defeat the oppressors. It was about the journey to get to that point. The journey in which we killed the pope and slaughtered 3 villages. That's what this was about. Mmhm. Real good use of that cliched saying right here, I'm sure you thought that one through carefully.

I'm going to say it. We've all been thinking it, but I'm going to say it:

Was this game written by a 14 year-old?

...I've been harsh on this game. And I'm not going to mince words - it deserves it. I don't want to be TOO mean because it feels like a passion project by a small team, and again, if you're on that team and reading this, sorry. There's no good way to tell you your baby's ugly and deformed, there's not much I can do to soften the blow. But at the same time, it's still a $20 ugly baby you guys put out for people to purchase, so it's not like I'm ripping into some fan-hack that somebody made for free. I paid for your shitty baby, I'm one of probably 7 people on the planet who did so, I have the right to criticize it.

The nicest thing I can say about this game is that I beat it. And hey, that's not terrible. Shozou Kaga, Mr Fire Emblem himself, has released frustrating piles of dog shit that I haven't bothered finishing yet, so even if your game is weird and nonsensical and frustrating, at least it was never so annoying that I quit playing it?

The fact that I cleared it in about a day is a testament to the fact that I was curious about the game, at least. That or the fact that I've been drugged up post-op and your game came out on the same day and I bought it on a whim. Probably that, actually.

Either way, I certainly didn't know what to expect. But looking back on it as a whole, it's just a thoroughly meh experience I can't really recommend anyone else spend money on.

My thoughts: Add a hard / remix mode, or maybe a NG+. There are some really cool skills in this game, with some tweaking and balancing to them, and some effort put into buffing enemies, enemy placement, and AI, you could actually make a really fun experience. Hell, if you do, I will replay this game, maybe even go for the characters I missed.

And although it may seem like I'm shitting on this game ... because I am ... I kinda wanna see this game grow up, and reach its potential. Sorta like how Nath hates Lua at first, but grows to like her more by the end.

I'm not dying for you though, Rise Eterna. Let's get that clear.
