Welcome to Round 12: Astrid and Makalov

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, providing full analyses for FE9 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

The results from the last round are Jill S and Sothe E

    Rules:

    • The game is played somewhat efficiently. No grinding, boss abuse, etc.
    • The game is played on the NA Hard version
    • Killing enemies quickly is good. Killing enemies slowly is bad. Anything that results into either of these directions, be it high offensive or defensive stats, movement, 1-2 range, availability, etc is fair game. Finishing chapters quickly is cool too.
    • Personality and other story-related things do not matter. Sorry, everyone's a robot.
    • All characters are recruited. Recruitment cost is thus a non-issue.
    • This is not an LTC playthrough, so there's no need to go that extreme. But it's not a completionist one either.
    • Supports are acknowledged as a part of the character's viability
    • Votes must have an explanation with them. I'm not asking for a paragraph but the bare minimum is a sentence or two describing why you're putting X unit into Y tier. If you do not put an explanation under your votes, your vote shall not be counted
    • When it comes to resources like BEXP, characters are tiered with how well they make use of possible resources, if they have other competition for said resources and how well they perform without them. Arguments as to why a certain units deserves investment are important.
    • Be respectful
    • You cannot rate Makalov low just because he stole Astrid

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role. The game changes substantialy when these units are sidelined.

    Includes: Titania, Marcia, Jill

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

    Includes: Oscar, Kieran

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your deployment options to fill out your team. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

Includes: Ike, Boyd, Soren, Rhys, Ilyana, Mist, Mordecai, Volke

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they do work and can become pretty good with investment but do fine without investment. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

    Includes: Lethe

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

    Includes: Gatrie, Zihark

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

    Includes: Shinon, Mia, Nephenee, Sothe

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Rolf, Brom

Next round will be Tormod and Stefan

Same Name Slam: Ending and Index

    Posted: 09 May 2021 06:48 AM PDT

Welcome back to the Same Name Slam, the battle to see which character earns the right to be called by their name versus the other characters with the same or similar name. Last time on the Same Name Slam, we had the Battle of the Leos. The scoring was as follows:

In eighth place with 3 points was Valentia!Leon!

Tied for sixth place with 4 points were Lionel and TRS!Leonie!

In fifth place with 7 points was Leo!

In fourth place with 10 points was Leonardo!

In third place with 12 points was BWS!Leon!

In second place with 13 points was 3H!Leonie!

And in first place with 18 points was Lyon!

Congratulations to Lyon! He has earned the title of being the best Leo of Fire Emblem.

So there you have it: the best character for each name shared across the series.

    ---

Now, let's get to my personal favorite comments. Let's be honest, you didn't come here just to see your favorite character win: you also came to see what other people said. Here are the most memorable moments in my opinion. I couldn't include all of the ones that I laughed at unfortunately, so I only have a top ten.

Before that, I have to give honorable mentions to the following comments: /u/SneakingShuuda's comment on the Hildas battle, /u/Rasvamestari's comment on the Sonias, /u/KrashBoomBang's comment on the Cecils, /u/Cecilyn's comment on the Hildas, /u/WeslePryce's comment on the Lucies, /u/SubwayBossEmmett's comment on the Robins, and /u/chessjumpbowl's comment on the Allens. That's out of the way, so now I will go through my top ten.

10.) Any of the raps made by /u/DoseofDhillon - I will admit that the raps weren't professional quality, but this is Reddit. They had charm to them. Making one rap in of itself is funny, but making them for every vote you do sets it apart.

9.) /u/racecarart saying that Linde can't spell her own name - You don't have to go all out and write a wall of text to be funny. This comment proves it because I did laugh at the idea that Linde can't spell her own name. EDIT: It came to my attention that this joke was originally made by /u/IAmBLD here. My apologies to them for missing it.

8.) /u/Pwnemon showing us how Marth builds an army and trusts nobody - I never thought about how "build an army and trust nobody" was a real thing in FE until now. And not only that, but Marth literally trusts nobody by how many people he can sacrifice. Which is hilarious.

7.) /u/terravinn pointing out that Cecilia is an imposter - The memes here were honestly so awful that it made me laugh, and then it made me think. At least Cecil's first impression is honest to who she actually is.

6.) /u/Seradwen telling us how important the name Reese is to Katarina - This one was a bit heartwarming because I never thought about Katarina's relationship to Clarisse in this way until now. It made me feel bad that Katarina got trounced this round.

5.) /u/jektrooper discusses the best thief in the series, Marth - Another comment that opened my eyes to something about Marth: he's not just a lord, he's a thief!

4.) /u/KrashBoomBang makes as many explosion puns as he can - I said when making this post that using Lorenz blowing himself up as an argument would be low-effort, but this was impressive how many could be fit into a single paragraph. So much so in fact that I still awarded it 2 points.

3.) /u/chessjumpbowl warns us that voting for Linda damages democracy - This was impressive to see. Especially the ending; that's a complete mic drop right there to talk about Edelgard vs Dimitri debates.

2.) /u/XC_Runner27 exposes Cain for the scum that he is - I laughed so hard when I saw this comment for the first time. It was already funny when XC said that he got Sophia to 20/20 once, but then there's the part when he says that Cain is racist towards runners. That's just...a fitting cherry on top.

1.) /u/chessjumpbowl literally writes fanfiction of the Leos battle - I wasn't originally planning to include two comments from the same person in the top ten, but this one was too extraordinary to leave out. Writing an entire mini-fanfiction of the Leo battle royale takes a lot of effort, and I found the friendship between Lionel and BWS!Leon to be nice.

    ---

So there you have it: this series has drawn to a conclusion. It started only because I made corny jokes about Ethlyn being the best Lyn and wanted to see what would happen if I put it to the test. Then I got the idea to do it with more people...and then people actually participated...and then I got even more requests to do battles. I'm amazed that it actually got this far. I must thank everyone who encouraged me to continue doing this; I also have to thank LaqOfInterest for inspiring me to do this with his series and KrashBoomBang for coming up with a catchy name for the series. And of course, thanks to everyone who has participated and made this memorable because without you guys this would not have succeeded.

As we conclude the series, why not recount your favorite moments in the comments? What was your favorite battle? Favorite comment? Let's hear about your experience.

Do you think rings, bands, shields, and other 'accessory equipable items should be in FE?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 11:03 AM PDT

Non-weapon equipable items that boost stats, give skills, and the like have hopped in and out of Fire Emblem for some time. Do you think they should stick around, or be banished? What do you think of them?

If they make stuff like BSFE and the SoV Rise of the Deliverance dlc what other stories would you like to see?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 01:00 PM PDT

Basically more lore and character building. These are great idea and I really wish they'd bring them back.

    For me:

    -Fe4

Gen 1 end spoilers Since we know that some of the characters survive the battle of Belhalla survive I'd like to see that as a full map. Maybe also have Lewyn's battle with Manfroy as a mission. For Gen 2 I guess I'd like to see more stuff with Tini and Arthur, Altina and Arion and Johan, Johalva and Larcei

    -Fates

You always hear about the royal siblings going on missions in CQ. I wanna see some of those

    -Crimson Flower

How Edelgard defeated the slithers. I don't care if it's just 1 or 2 maps just give us something

Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light - My Experience

    Posted: 09 May 2021 02:42 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I don't usually frequent this sub a whole lot so I'm sorry if this post breaks some kind of rule I don't know about. Anyways, I'm here today because I just finished my first ever playthrough of Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (Switch Version) and would like to share my experience of the game with other passionate fans of the series. After I beat any game I usually like to jot down a few thoughts about the game before moving on to the next game but in this case it became rather lengthy.

If anyone does actually end up reading this whole mess please understand that I wrote this as a recap of my experience with the game and not necessarily as a review. It's not super well written or heavily edited so you may come across many grammatical errors and run-on sentences. With that said - enjoy!

Medeus slain by Marth's Falchion on
May 8, 2021 (Total Playtime: Roughly 40+ Hours)

    Backstory:
My journey with Fire Emblem started a long, long time ago as a young teenager when I watched my friend play Path of Radiance on the Wii. At the time I had no knowledge of how significant the series had been in Japan during the 90's or how significant it would become in the West with the release of the the DS & 3DS games and Three Houses later on in the distant 2010's. Nevertheless, the series' strategy elements and fantasy setting were intriguing, which made me want to experience it for myself.

My official starting point with the series began when I played the first localized Fire Emblem game for Western audiences, simply titled "Fire Emblem" for the GBA, which I played on my laptop emulator at in high school. I vaguely remember getting stuck on a certain chapter about 3/4 of the way through due to being under-leveled and ending up having to restart it. Eventually, I beat the game and found the experience to be a pure joy. The characters, the story, the tactics and strategy - I fell in love with all of it and I wanted more. To this day Lyndis, Hector and Eliwood hold a special place in my heart as my original three Heros (Lords). Just like how Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur will always be favorite starter trio due to the fact that they were my gateway into the world of Pokémon, the Fire Emblem Trio perform the same function as my true introduction into the world of Fire Emblem.

After Fire Emblem (Also referred to as Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade),I went on to play the next GBA game made available in the West - Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones which is actually the 8th game in the series. The story and structure of the overall game was a bit different from the previous game with two branching paths and essentially two main characters - twins Eirika and Ephraim. The story was pretty good but not as interesting as the previous one in my opinion and the gameplay was just as solid. My main gripe with the game was that it felt a little bit too easy. I don't recall exactly how it all worked but basically there were maps where you could farm for easy XP by fighting zombie like creatures which made the whole game feel kind of cheap because at point you could just skip on over to a zombie map and grind out a few levels for your weaker characters in relative safety. Regardless of this issue I really enjoyed my time with this game as well but as much as the first.

The last of the GBA trio is actually the 6th game in the series which takes place after the events of the 7th (Roy is Elliwood's son). This game has never been officially released in the West so in order to play it I had to download and apply a English translation patch for the Japanese Rom. It worked fairly well and definitely made the game playable. I don't really remember much from this game other than it felt shorter than the previous too and less polished. That might have something to do with it being the first GBA Fire Emblem game or maybe it had more to do with the fact that I was playing it through a translation path. Either way I had no trouble beating the game and found it rather enjoyable as well.

Overall, I really love the GBA Fire Emblem games and hope to one day revisit each of them. Maybe I'll even tackle Hard Mode in Fire Emblem 7. Who knows?

Anyways, that almost brings us up to date with the present. There's just one tiny pitstop left. Right after moving to a new state I decided I ought to try and play the "original" Fire Emblem titles in the series, naturally starting with the first and working my way up to the 6th. After a bit of research I settled upon playing the SNES remake of the first game titled Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, which also includes an original story proceeding the remake of the 1st game that acts as a sequel the original. Anyway, I downloaded a SNES emulator onto my phone and the English version of the game and got to it. It's been a few year since then but I can remember it being sort of difficult to control everything on the phone due the SNES game having more inputs than GBA games that I was use to. Either way I pressed on and was having a decent enough time with it. However, early on in the playthrough it felt like the difficulty curve took a dramatic turn upwards and it became it difficult to see how I was going to progress. I remember feeling like it was pointless to continue that run of the game and due to the awkward method in which I was playing I simply gave up on the game entirely in favor of playing more things on my Wii U. I don't really regret any of these decisions, however, it just means that it's taken until now - May 2021 - for me to finally play and beat the first game in this series that I love so much.

With all that backstory out of the way we can finally get back to the present and did into what I think about Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light.

    Overview:
Before I get into the weeds discussing what I liked and didn't like about the game I just want to say that I really enjoyed experiencing Marth's story and the origins of the series in a format that is as close to the original as possible. While the SNES remake I played was definitely more polished mechanically speaking and overall better looking, I definitely preferred playing the 8-bit original in all of its jank in order to get a truer sense of where all of "THIS" began.
With that said I'm going to "briefly" list a few things I liked and didn't like about Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light.

    Pros:
    - The game's story and characters were charming despite their simplicity. I enjoyed how "GOOD" the good guys were and how obviously "EVIL" the bad guys acted. There was little to no nuance but for a game of this ilk and era it felt rather fitting. The story was a little difficult to follow due to there being such little exposition given at the beginning and ending of chapters but overall I liked the feel of my HERO'S QUEST to find the magic relics in order to defeat the evil Medeus.
    - Battles - I still really enjoyed the moment to moment gameplay of slashing down wave after wave of enemies with well placed and smartly equipped units. There were definitely rough patches around the edges but the core of what makes Fire Emblem - Fire Emblem is definitely here with fun battle animations and interesting units to deploy and maneuver in battle.
    - Tactics and Strategy - Without the weapons triangle the tactics felt a little off at first but eventually I got used to the general principal of the game - KEEP YOUR DUDES ALIVE! Because boy oh boy are your guys not that strong. So instead of maximizing damage output like I normally do in these games my goal became to simply not allow any of my units die while still leveling up weaker characters so that they could help me out in the future. So tactics and strategy wise it was still fun but more geared toward survival as opposed to optimization of damage output.

    Cons
    - Managing inventory during the chapters was a real pain and probably one of my biggest gripes with the whole experience. While I don't blame the game itself for this limitation it would have been nice if Nintendo could have possibly added some kind of preparation phase between chapters to manage unit weapons and items instead of having to do it during the actual chapter which was always a slog to go through.
    - Another major con is that there were too many characters who were not useful. Maybe it was poor decision making on my part but according to some of sources I looked at prior to playing I used the best characters available to me. My biggest mistake in regards to unit selection was taking all three Pegasus sisters in hopes that there triangle attack would be worth the trouble - news flash - it wasn't. As opposed to being the one hit KO that I thought it would be the triangle attack was about as powerful as a critical hit and it has the chance of missing! Talk about a lot of work for very little payoff.

While I could start nitpicking little things like Mages and Generals not being as good as in other games that's all I really have in regards to cons.

    Modern Features:
Let's be clear here! I would not have beaten this game without the modern features that have been added to this anniversary addition of the NES original. The Turn Rewind, Bookmark and Double Speed features were all absolutely imperative to me keeping my sanity and finishing this game.
Without Turn Rewind unforeseen errors, "miss-clicks," and untimely critical attacks resulting in restarts would have absolutely frustrated me to no end. Luckily all of these problems were completely mitigated by this feature which I used sparingly but do not to seldom.
The Bookmark feature gave me the ability to save at a point in which I hadn't made any real errors and then experiment with tactics or strategies to overcome a battle or finishing a chapter. This felt less like cheating compared to Turn Rewind because it basically removed the possibility of redoing previous turns at the beginning a chapter that you know will be successful just to get back to the point in which you made the earlier error.
However, this did feel like cheating when I used it to abuse the arena which I do not feel bad about simply due to have how powerful the regular grunts and bosses of this game can be for everyone aside from the uber-strong characters.
Finally, the Double-Speed toggle was what actually made this game playable turn by turn. Without this feature it is very unlikely that I would have finished the game based simply on how slow everything in the game is. While movement speed is pretty slow battle animations are absolutely atrocious and so I'm extra grateful to have this feature to zip through those.

    Random Thoughts:
    - I loved the Hero and Paladin battle animations. The Paladin sword animation was particular nice when it hit. Something about it was just so satisfying.
    - I wished mages upgraded into Sages instead of Bishops. Something about that didn't feel right. I missed having Sages in this game I guess.
    - As I already mentioned the Pegasus sisters' triangle attack was pretty lame but even individually they were too weak to be useful. Kind of a shame really.
    - Caeda promoting into a Wyvern was kind of weird. I missed having Falcon Knights from the GBA games.
    - I wish the animation for Falchion was more epic but it seems they did the best they could with what they had.
    - Ogma and Navarre were two of my best units and carried me throughout many chapters.
    - Abel turned out to be a better Paladin for me than Cain, but Cain ended up still doing alright and being useful.
    - Jeorge was actually a great pickup and integral to my success. Definitely have not had to rely so much on a pure Sniper before.
    - I wouldn't have probably been able to win without the warp staffs. The last chapter basically requiring them was kind of annoying. In regards to the last chapter I was also very sad about having to sacrifice a few of my units in order to win. Maybe I could have found a way to rescue them but it didn't seem likely.
    - Music was fun even if it was a little repetitive. Wish I could have listened to it more but unfortunately the double speed feature made the music play at double speed as well which was not pleasant to listen to.
    - Units not having resistance was pretty weird and oddly funny.
    - I wish I could have used Xane and Tiki. I know the consensus is that Tiki is pretty good if you level her up and Xane's premise as a shape shifter seemed pretty interesting.
    - Not having any axe users in my party seems weird now looking back on it now but I got used it. Wish I had used at least one.
    - Ballisticians seemed like weird units to me so I simply avoided using either of the ones I recruited.
    - Healers not gaining XP from healing was rather annoying because they remained weak and vulnerable the entire game. Not too big an issue but still a slight inconvenience.

    Conclusion:
While I'm sure there is more I could say and might add about my experience with Fire Emblem SDatBoL, it is time to bring this chapter to a close. To conclude my thoughts on this game I just want to reiterate that I'm glad that I was finally able to play and beat this game in it's near original format. A Fire Emblem fan this has been something that I have wanted to cross off my bucket-list for a while and so to be able to finally accomplish that goal feels pretty good. I'm especially glad that this version came with the aforementioned modern features of turn rewind, bookmarks, and double speed that if had absent from this release would have probably meant that I would not have finished the game. Overall, I enjoyed Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and found it to be good game despite its age and a wonderful beginning to a franchise that I love.

P.S. Shoutout to Ogma, Navarre and Abel! The MVP's of my first and potentially only run through of this game!

P.S.S. Also, Marth wasn't half-bad either. Why couldn't they have made an cool promotion for him!? Marth on a horse with Falchion would have been awesome!
