Same Name Slam #29: Battle of the Leos (Eight-Way Battle Royale)

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:05 AM PDT

Welcome back to the Same Name Slam, the battle to see which character earns the right to be called by their name versus the other characters with the same or similar name. Last time on the Same Name Slam, we had the Battle of the Alts. The scoring was as follows:

In third place with 3 points was Altina!

In second place with 4 points was Alvina!

And in first place with 12 points was Altena!

Congratulations to Altena! She has earned the title of being the best Alt of Fire Emblem.

More detail on scoring can be found in this comment here.

On today's episode, we are doing something a bit different because this is the very last episode. We have an eight-way battle royale, the Battle of the Leos!

First off, the archer from Fire Emblem: Gaiden and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, Leon! He is close friends with Valbar and joins Celica's army in Act 2.

Secondly is the archer from Tear Ring Saga: Yutona Heroes Saga, Leonie! She is a member of Lionheart's rebel army.

Thirdly is the lance soldier from Tear Ring Saga; Yutona Heroes Saga, Lionel! He is a knight of Wellt who is friends with Norton.

Fourthly is the necromancer from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Lyon! Lyon is the prince of Grado who is friends with Eirika and Ephraim.

Fifth is the lance soldier from Tear Ring Saga: Berwick Saga: Lazberia Chronicles Chapter 174, Leon! He is a knight of Chinon who once helps out an old lady.

Sixth is the archer from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Leonardo! He is one of the members of the Dawn Brigade, the rebel group led by Micaiah.

Seventh is the dark knight from Fire Emblem: Fates, Leo! He is one of the princes of Nohr who is raised as a sibling to Corrin.

Last but not least is the commoner from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Leonie! She a student from the Leicester Alliance who is a member of the Golden Deer house.

Just to review, these are the rules:

    1. Do not be mean to other users; be nice and avoid the ad hominem.

    2. Any argument that isn't sexually explicit is allowed. As LaqOfInterest said, "There are no stupid arguments." Throw down whatever you have! (Yes, ad hominem towards the characters themselves is allowed.)

    3. Mark your spoilers.

And just as a reminder, each round lasts 24 hours, and you have to submit a parent-level comment to "vote." Higher effort comments earn 2 points each, while lower effort comments earn 1 point each.

One more thing: you can put higher-effort comments towards multiple characters since there are so many characters to choose. If you have a high-quality throwdown but can't decide between which character you want to support, support both!

Now that the post is done, let's get rolling!

FE9 Redux Tier List Round 11: Sothe and Jill

Why Jill was banned from Twitter

Welcome to Round 11: Sothe and Jill

Each round will last about 24 hours in between each other. Rate the units in each tier, and give clear explanations as to why. Feel free to comment on each other and discuss why you agree or disagree. Be polite, and remember, this is all in good fun. After the 24 hours, I will review all the answers and understand what the consensus reached has been, posting the result in the next round. If there is no clear majority, a tally will be made. If a tie ensues, well the round will be extended until a tiebreaker comment appears. At the very end, a hub finalized tier list will be created, providing full analyses for FE9 units as well as a good solid tier list for the community.

The results from the last round are Brom F and Zihark D

    Rules:

    • The game is played somewhat efficiently. No grinding, boss abuse, etc.
    • The game is played on the NA Hard version
    • Killing enemies quickly is good. Killing enemies slowly is bad. Anything that results into either of these directions, be it high offensive or defensive stats, movement, 1-2 range, availability, etc is fair game. Finishing chapters quickly is cool too.
    • Personality and other story-related things do not matter. Sorry, everyone's a robot.
    • All characters are recruited. Recruitment cost is thus a non-issue.
    • This is not an LTC playthrough, so there's no need to go that extreme. But it's not a completionist one either.
    • Supports are acknowledged as a part of the character's viability
    • Votes must have an explanation with them. I'm not asking for a paragraph but the bare minimum is a sentence or two describing why you're putting X unit into Y tier. If you do not put an explanation under your votes, your vote shall not be counted
    • When it comes to resources like BEXP, characters are tiered with how well they make use of possible resources, if they have other competition for said resources and how well they perform without them. Arguments as to why a certain units deserves investment are important.
    • Be respectful
    • You cannot rate Makalov low just because he stole Astrid

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Tiers Being Used:

    Fantastic Performance: S

Insanely useful from the get go, always a dominant force from the moment they arrive and require little investment if any. Contributes in a significant enough manner that they always sticks out and have a substantial role. The game changes substantialy when these units are sidelined.

    Includes: Titania, Marcia

    Great Performance: A

Extremely useful and always a good addition to a team. Doesn't require too much investment and if they do then it's enough to make them stand out compared to most units. Biggest things holding them back are that they either don't stand out as much as the S tiers or even with investment they aren't as dominant in their role as the S tiers.

    Includes: Oscar, Kieran

    Good Performance: B

Is pretty useful and has some sections of the game where they stand out and help. Overall solid, isn't the most significant unit, but definitely contributes in a helpful way. Aren't the highest priority when it comes to deployment, but will definitely be one of your deployment options to fill out your team. Biggest things holding them back are good but not amazing stats, not the best class access, not the best weapon access and maybe not the best availability. Good, but has some significant flaws that hold them back from being great.

Includes: Ike, Boyd, Soren, Rhys, Ilyana, Mist, Mordecai, Volke

    AOK Performance: C

Perfectly average, they do work and can become pretty good with investment but do fine without investment. At the end of the day they are just serviceable, neither a detriment nor a priority when it comes to being used and are essentially filler.

    Includes: Lethe

    Iffy Performance: D

Can perform a niche role and do something, but generally aren't that useful. Don't really do much and if they do something unique then it's usually done much better by a bunch of other units. Severely outclassed by most other units and while they can do something, it's usually pretty bleh in execution.

    Includes: Gatrie, Zihark

    Lame Performance: E

Straight up bad, no way around it. There are very few places where they are actually useful, and they are actively difficult units to use effectively. Can probably do something at base such as heal other units, rescue canto others or chip stuff with effective weapons but it's such a bare minimum contribution that calling them good would be a stretch. They can do something, that's the most you can say for them. Other then that they're bad.

    Includes: Shinon, Mia, Nephenee

    Meme Performance: F Rank

These units are just really bad, complete bottom of the barrel. So bad that even with an insane amount of investment they either end up still bad or at best incredibly mediocre and this is accounting for immense babying and all stat boosters going to them. E ranks can at least do something that counts as contribution. These units can't even have that as a claim to fame, they're so bad that they just do little if anything in a non casual/non meme context.

    Includes: Rolf, Brom

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next round will be Astrid and Makalov

    Hot takes thread 5/8/21

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:43 AM PDT

I'll start this thread with a quote from Army of Darkness "I live...again"

So it's been a while hasn't it? Why is that? Well it's simply because College has been kicking my ass six ways from Sunday so I haven't really thought about it for a while.

Anyway same rules as last time

    1. Keep it at least somewhat related to FE

    2. Don't be an ass (especially considering the shit that went down yesterday Jesus Christ)

    3. Mark your spoilers

Allow me to make the case for an Awakening remake, just NOT any time soon.

    Posted: 08 May 2021 03:46 PM PDT

So we all know the story of Awakening. It was the last hurrah for the series, so they wanted it to be a love letter to years of Fire Emblem history. Every previous game gets referenced in Awakening to some fashion. In a non gameplay sense, I think that's awesome. the way Chrom has dynamics of Marth, Sigurd AND Ike all in a single character, and how pieces of FE history from all of the older games are woven together without it really seeming forced or contrived for the most part, that's all very cool.

BUT, as you can tell from the flair, this thread is not about the non gameplay sense.

Perhaps this is just me, but I think Awakening strictly in gameplay terms suffers a lot from trying to balance making a fun game with paying tribute to the series in what could be its final moments. I feel like all of the crazy overpowered legacy weapons, the Einherjar and all of the classic mechanics slapped together it really hurts Awakening's identity as a standalone game. I certainly don't fault IS for designing the game this way, given the context of the series at the time of its development and what Awakening was meant to accomplish. This is why I believe a remake is in order eventually.

Whether you like Awakening or not, I think it's a fair statement to say that it's a very important game in the franchise. It may be a bit hyperbolic to say that it "saved the franchise" but it definitely did create a whole new generation of fans and take the series into a higher level of international success. To this very day, it's treated with a pretty high amount of importance by IS and most casual FE fans. Awakening characters very frequently show up in Heroes, have more merchandise than their peers, have three characters in Smash Brothers (the only FE subseries to have more than one), and in general make the most crossover appearances even years after Awakening is no longer the newest game.

The way I see it is simple, because IS could not predict how successful Awakening would be, it was designed for the series to go out on a bang if the worst came to pass. Since that did not happen, a remake would allow Awakening to be reimagined as the best version of itself that it can be, with the benefit of hindsight that did not exist at the time of its development.

This is also where I must stress the NOT any time soon in the title. Before IS even thinks about doing this, all of the Japanese exclusive titles should be remade first. Hell, maybe even Tellius if you buy into the rumor mill. Considering that the original Awakening was itself a milestone celebration game, the remake is something I imagine we wouldn't see until another big anniversary for the series comes up.

So what would this remake actually change? I have a few ideas.

    • Hyperfocus on the things that make Awakening unique: This means cut down on things like opening up the barracks and getting Ephraim's Lance, Hector's Axe, Leif's Blade and all the other things. I don't really think Einherjar are all that necessary either because while they're a cool novelty, I question how much they actually work as fanservice given that the characters are totally unvoiced, have no unique dialogue and VERY off model character designs.
    • Trim the fat: Let's be real, how many times do you use things like Double Duels? There's also most of the Spotpass and Bonus Box features which either required 3DS specific functions to work or compounded the problem I mentioned earlier. Worst case scenario, these features can be replaced with new ones that can add more to the game as a unique experience rather than adding more excess that just drowns out what Awakening does unique on its own.
    • Refine what's left: With a clear focus on Awakening's own strengths, we can imagine rounding them out to make the best game possible. Obviously the first order of business is to redesign pair up (and galeforce), but there are other things I think could be reasonably improved. One of the things I dread the most when I return to Awakening is learning skills especially for child unit inheritance. I think something like the goal/tutoring system from Three Houses or even the scroll system from the Tellius games would be a lot less monotonous than grinding out your units until they reach the level where they learn the skill you want, which also has the adverse effect of further trivializing a game that is not known for its difficulty to begin with. It would also be nice if the maps were refined more, but based on the other remakes I don't know how much I expect that. From a non gameplay sense they could also do things like add more dialogue, supports, scenes, what have you.

Just to clarify so no one gets the wrong idea, I'm NOT saying "they should make Awakening again but take out all the references to other games" because I think that would remove a huge part of the game's identity. I'm just suggesting that for such a significant game in the series history, a lot of its gameplay issues come from trying too hard to cram in as many things as possible from older games. The purpose of a remake would be to create a game that shines on its own merits with the benefit of hindsight and not having to juggle so much at once. And I think Awakening is a fair candidate considering how important it is to IS and the series.

Even if I haven't sold you on the idea I appreciate you reading this far. I hope it can generate some good discussion.

Let's create original FE characters together!

    Posted: 08 May 2021 10:36 AM PDT

Person A comes up with name, title and gender.

Person B, they add their class, whether they are promoted or not, and a basic personality.

Person C adds their growths and backstory.

Finally, Person D gives their skills, what their supports focus on, and any interesting extra notes (like a special event they have, or people they can recruit, etc.).

Please, do not rip off existing Fire Emblem characters, or characters from already existing franchises.

    No memey, full-joke characters.
