So... I actually am somewhat enjoying Revelation.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:49 AM PDT

By no means do I think it is a great game, or a well designed one. It isn't. But my experiences with it so far make me feel like the hate it gets is over exaggerated a little? I still have a good part of the game left (I am on Chapter 20) so my opinion could change, but... I actually am having some fun with it?

Like, yes, the snow map was probably the worst FE map I have ever played. The game takes a while to get going, because the first few Rev chapters really do suck. Unit balance is stupid. Many maps can easily be cheesed with flyers to get around their "gimmick". But, almost all of the other maps so far in the mid game are... Inoffensive at worst, I guess. And the last chapter with the duplicate army Dragon Vein was actually kinda fun? All the seals you get, thanks to getting both shops, is also nice for customization, and I like it a lot because I love how Fates handles reclassing.

To be fair, I am playing on Hard, and also with a PMU. So, that means I am not using Shura, Ryoma, or Xander full time (just Camilla, and now she is a Maid). I needed to do some grinding to build supports and catch some units up. But, the game has been better than I was expecting, when I was expecting it to be absolutely, irredeemably awful. I actually am preferring it to Awakening, believe it or not.

So yeah, treating the game like a sandbox, while unfortunately gimping yourself by not using the broken units, makes the game not ridiculously terrible and kind of enjoyable to me. Does anyone else feel this way? Or are the later chapters going to make me take back what I am saying? Like the elevator rides! I cant wait.

Would you like IS to fill the gaps bewteen maps, not like the monastery, but with something like camping with the army, walking around, actually moving from place to place...?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 09:07 AM PDT

I don't know if I like the idea. Think of this more or less like Chrono Trigger. You walk around, and when the battle begins, the party members appear on the same map you were walking on. There's no screen transition. I think of this everytime I see Three Houses maxed zoomed in map view, where you can "freely" walk with you character.

Would you like, for example, to be able to walk between Galder and the Samsooth Mountain (chapters 2 and 3) in Shadow Dragon?

Kaga really knows how to make chapters go from hunting to being hunted.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon Merciless Mode LTC Chapters 21-24

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 12:14 PM PDT

Shadow Dragon is known to be a game completely destroyed by the warp staff. For the most part I think that is unfair as there is still plenty of game to be played with full warp staff usage. Well except for these maps, warp decimates these maps...

    Chapter 21

Caeda easily ORKO's the boss though she unfortunately didn't get enough stats to have 100 hit. A shame really. The stat boosters bought at the shop are kinda specific. We need a 14 strength and 30 speed unit. The plan is to give the boosters to Palla so we need all 3 wings and 2 drops but if we were using Caeda we'd just buy 3 drops. The extra money goes to reliability boosters.

    Overall CoS: 99.9%

    Chapter 22

The boss is very bulky and doesn't take effective damage but luckily a capped speed draco can double him. Merric was trained so that he could reliably damage him but if he didn't turn out we could have used Linde who has suboptimal hit rates. A small mistake is I should have hammerned the thunder bolt in chapter 21 so that Beck could also chip in if Palla happened to miss the boss on a 91 but it doesn't matter much. Jake is getting about +45 hit from his supports this map which is overkill but funny.

Also it should be noted that the most reliable option for this boss kill is actually using the boosters on Caeda as she would pull 100 hit. Palla was boosted because favoritism is cool and it showcases she can be used in the event Caeda is strength screwed and we are unwilling to forge a +5 wyrmslayer.

    Overall CoS: 97.9%

    Chapter 23

Even though Caeda wasn't boosted she's still useful this map for weakening the boss. The boss at 17 crit which is nasty but Caeda has a lot of luck and her Marth support makes this irrelevant. We need Rickard to get the money for some extra stat boosters.

    Overall CoS: 99.9%

    Chapter 24

Boss is killed 100% of the time by a triangle attack so it turns out Est is actually good for something. We don't need to boost Palla for this as she can always do it so long as we have a forged wyrmslayer. We bought a lot of boosters but the only relevant ones are an angelic robe and 2 manuals. The rest of the money didn't matter so I wasted it. Cain's promotion also doesn't matter but what else am I supposed to do with the master seal? Besides he deserves it. Rickard was also warped to pick up the Aum staff as we need it for the final map.

    Overall CoS: 100%

    New unit:

Elice - Not much to say as she joins so late but she can use warp and the Aum staff that we get in chapter 24 which will be used in the final map.

Ymir - Might as well mention him since I mentioned all the other optional units. He's got big stats but as demonstrated, only certain big stats matter at this point in the game and Ymir doesn't have them distributed in any of the good places. Being in the B class set his only option for 30 speed is Horseman and his 6 personal isn't going to be enough for that to be an option.

Some reflections about a Genealogy remake.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 01:31 PM PDT

We all are excited now with Nintendo Tree-house happening soon, most of the community is eager to see what IS has to offer this time, but between an entirely new game or a remake of a beloved title, people seem to bet in the later, specially for Genealogy of the Holy War, as many events indicate it based on previous remakes, me included. Many fans so far theorized and expressed their opinions on the topic, with a lot of valid information and, based on we saw in previous remakes and modern FEs, we made some educated guesses, like quality of life changes to make the immense maps and long enemy turns easier to deal, removing some questionable mechanics, like the pawn shop, improvements to the old skill mechanics as it was refined over decades now, so we should, at least, see something closer to what we saw in Thracia 776.

Some people are even speculating the use of Kaga's many discarded ideas for the game, but some exposition is needed before diving on this topic, as not everyone is a FE specialist. Fire Emblem's creator, Shouzou Kaga, made an interview talking about Genealogy, that it was his most ambitious project aiming for a huge complex game and more details about it's development. The most spoken topic being Kaga's concepts for a third generation that would close the events of the new holy war, but were scrapped due to the chaos of the production, with many of it's event being either cut or repurposed, like Arthur's and Tine's quest to heal their father's petrification, Larcei being possessed by a cursed sword, as well many characters being put in different places than or even completely vanishing. While there is no real indication of the full extent of Thracia 776 being originally planned to be part of the original Genealogy of the Holy War, we can assume that some of it was planned to happen and, thankfully it was dropped, because if not, we would not have one of the best Fire Emblems ever made.

Even as Thracia being regarded as one of the hardest FEs, being the one behind killing my compassion for my units and teaching that I should use a guide when playing any of Kaga's games, still Thracia ranks as one of my favorite games in this series for many reasons, can you imagine if Leif's saga in northern Thracia was a part of Genealogy? All that story reduced to one/two chapters would be something to mourn, and that's, my opinion, the biggest problem with GotHW narrative, it is too big, so gigantic that many details simply are left out and between them some opportunities too.

During the events of FE4 it's stated that Lachesis leaves Nanna and Finn to see Diarmud in Isaach, but she disappears at some point of the journey, in FE5 it's confirmed that the last time she was saw was close to the Aed desert, not something of big importance at first glace, but everything made sense after remembering who was in the last big city before the Aed desert, her long lost nephew, Ares, who has been living in Darna for quite some time, they now got to Agustria, in a journey akin to Thracia, to connect, recover Mystletainn and gather allies, all while plotting a rebellion, that is ignited by Leif's and Seliph's endeavors. Silesse could also receive a similar narrative improvements with Ced being freed by Saias presence in Thracia, who also should be used to acquire Valflame after defeating Alvis (and if IS don't do this, we riot), returning home, or perhaps never leaving, and trying to get the hold of things.

Would IS ever pick such subtle details and developing them into full fledged game plot? Definitely no, we should be happy if they at least acknowledge this things and make a dialogue about them. Will that stop me from writing this dumb post or writing a whole script for said things? Also no.
