The variations in Academy uniforms

I can't help but wonder how all the variations in the school uniforms came to be and how the school allows the modifications. From the vest to the tunic versions of the jacket.

Characters like Dorothea and Hilda I can give a pass because the adjustments are pretty simply. Just unbutton the jacket in the former and ditch the jacket entirely for the latter.

But does everyone get the same standard uniform and they all make sewing modification or what? Does the school hand out a catalogue of all the different versions of the uniforms and Lorenz just points to the pompous coattails variant? What about Ferdinand's tunic version vs Felix shirt & vest.

And that's not even getting to the House leaders. Dimitri's got some armor built into the uniform and Edelgard has the extra white embellishments on her collar. Did all previous house leaders where those variations?

Sorry for all the rambling. I'm just legitimately curious. And yes I understand the trope of custom uniforms. It gives each character a bit of personality to their design and adds some diversity to the visuals.
