Who's your favourite mercenary/hero in FE?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:18 PM PDT

This week's edition of 'who's your favourite' it's time to talk about the super reliable and super badass mercenary class.

So the question is, who's your favourite mercenary/hero in Fire Emblem? I like Echidna best.

Mercenary/hero class only, please save Ike and other Lords for the Lord class entry

FE Echoes' hidden theme (obviously spoilers ahead!)

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 07:27 PM PDT

I've been replaying FE Echoes recently, taking my time, reading dialogues and trying to find... something. Like, you know when you play a game again and again, yet fail to find that one piece that completes the puzzle?

Well... I think I've found one. So, we all know how the continent is dying, Duma is turning insane, Mila ain't that much better and both kingdoms went into extremes. However, there is that one random villager in Ram Village who makes an interesting comment: "It must be payback for when the king refused to send food during Rigel's drought" or something...

Then we have the backstory of Fernand who lost his family because the commoners got angry and targeted his noble family. We never know how they behaved, but probably positively considering what both memory crystals and that one DLC map reveals of the grey-haired cavalier. Again: non-communication from one side (or both?) leads to violence...

Now, and I feel dirty for bringing this up... the DLC. Mathilda and Clair attempt to obtain a magical ring that reduces any magic damage to 1HP for Clive, but it cannot be brought into the light. Therefor, instead of making Clive invincible, they have to fight alongside him and send-off mages while he himself acts more as a physical shield and lance. Luke and Forsyth discover through their conversations that they are total opposites of each other and connect through their differences, not just similitudes. Clive and Python discuss... well, more like Python shows to Clive how wrong he is, but Clive learns from this and grows into a better, less-social-class-focused knight...

And then we come back to the story itself. In Act 2's final cutscene, yes, we have Alm and Celica fighting since she can't reveal anything about her lineage. However, and the narrator adresses it himself: they are WRONG to divide their focus since they are both *right*. One sees the imminent threat while the other sees not only the religious one, but the national security and law-inforcement struggles, results of Lima IV's stupidity giving absolute unofficial power to Desaix (who also gets killed by Alm). They each work their way through the problems of Zofia. Let's think like the mountain villagers: a random squad lead by a red-haired priestess comes out of nowhere while the Deliverance is busy, they get rid of the most prominent thief in all the kingdom and goes THEN to help Mila. Who do you think they'll want as a ruler: Alm, who they never even saw, or Celica, who they know fought for them directly?

And then we reach my final point: Alm's promotion. You cannot promote him until CELICA acts for him. As for Alm, he obviously fights in Act 5 for the entire continent, but also for her and her sake. Celica is Mila's philosophy taken to its logical extreme: giving yourself away for the sake of others, even your own kin (Duma for Mila, Alm for Celica, juuuuuust here with a love aspect). As for Alm, he's in the action, the immediate, but he has the vigor to keep fighting and working. He grew up as intended by Rudolf, to gain strength and power through hardships, but first on Mila's own soil to receive the warmth and kindness everybody deserves.

And now for my simple thesis: Echoes isn't just about breaking the status quo and believing in humans' strength, but also simply cooperation. Yes, my point is THAT simple: both armies work independantly, yet cover each other's weaknesses (you can even resurrect fallen comrades from one army into the next if you're that wicked... or, you know, traveling merchants are a thing too :') ). They don't only fight the Rigelian army, but also those endangering their own country. More and more Rigelians join those two armies not because they are war prisoners, but because they believe in the unification of the continent. Hell, remember how Saber is from Rigel? Yes, he is! Deen is hinted too with his mentality being a more toned-down Duma. And others are more obvious, like Sonia (and Silque!!! Never forget she was basically saved from the Duma Faithful by her mother dropping her off in the priory out of sheer love). And what you get at the end of the Thabes Labyrinth? A memory prism showing that Duma and Mila refused to COOPERATE and cut off the continent in two kingdoms.

Next time you play FE Echoes... do keep this in mind. Yes, the noble-commoner theme is kinda bad because of Alm's heritage, yes some of Celica's actions are rash, yes it could have been better... but we can also appreciate what we got and see new things to share with fellow fans of the series <3 Share more positivity and insightful knowledge whenever you can... and don't judge those who do if you find their reflections obvious ;) Then again this own post might be completely obvious and I was just dumb for the longest time *shrugs*

What’s a character that you feel are being amazing but one thing hold them back?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 06:17 AM PDT

There a lot of characters like this in Fire emblem, where they have a high amount of potential but miss the mark because of one thing, an example of this would be Cordelia from Awakening who only thing holding her character back is her random adoration towards Chrom.

Good game to start out with and want high difficulty

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:19 PM PDT

My friend would joke about how fire emblem doesnt require real strategy and that darkest dungeon (a game he loves) is superior, i actually got him to try the iron emblem hack but he actually got fustrated and quit lmao, i think hes willing to give a hard fire emblem a try. i was thinking fe6 with hardmode immediatly but is fe6 normal mode hard enough?(since hes coming off from darkest dungeon and really loves games with high difficulty) Any other games come to mind too with this?

A video I made analysing the music and leitmotifs in the soundtrack of FE3H! It looks at how the OST supports character arcs and worldbuilding from a perspective of music theory.
