22 obscure Thracia 776 facts to celebrate this Thracia Anniversary

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:55 PM PDT

I had a lot of fun compiling a similar list for Fire Emblem 30th anniversary, so let's do it again! It's been one more year of digging into one of the more obscure titles in the franchise, so here's a more organized list of more-or-less obscure tidbits for it.

    About the game:

    • Contrary to popular belief, releasing captured enemies that return later will not kill them. Except Galzus for some reason. (Lifis, Misha and Trude don't count, because they're not returning enemies, and keeping them captured is their recruitment condition.)

    • All units have a "gender marker" in their character data. There are a few enemies with a gender marker that doesn't match their physical appearance, including Eyvel As Deadlord Canis being marked as a guy, but not generic Canis. However, this marker isn't used anywhere, and gender truly does not matter.

    • The enemy's attacking AI gives a slight priority to certain classes when attacking, preferring mounted and armored units to your lord, thieves, dancers and healers. However, other factors play a much larger role into the targeting, like the unit's HP, their ability to survive an attack, or the presence of other enemies around them.

    • In stark contrast to FE6 where you can miss a 100%, staves in FE5 can hit a 0%. Because staff accuracy rolls between 0 and 100 (instead of 99), and rolling a 100 is coded as a freebie guaranteed hit. (In practice, you can't go below 60% staff accuracy, but it's a fun detail.) Edit: As Valk pointed out, this cannot physically happen. Even though the game rolls between 0 and 100, that roll can never return a 100. My bad!

    • You can't display more than 17 skills on a single character, but the game tries really hard to fit them all in if you push toward that limit.

    • In vanilla FE5, there is a hole in Leif's map sprite. (We filled the hole in Leif's heart in Lil' Manster. <3)

    • There is a wild AI exploit that causes all enemies to start targeting each other with status staves. It involves berserking the first enemy unit to be loaded and making sure their status doesn't get erased. More details here.

    By chapters:

    • There is alternate text at the end of chapter 1 and the start of chapter 2 if you somehow got Eyvel captured. Chapter 2's opening has even more alternate text if Finn also got killed. Nothing too odd, but man, you've really gotta try, to get those.

    • In chapter 4, the 16 chests will hold the items Leif and Lifis came with, plus a Rapier, Javelin, Steel Sword and Vulnerary. If Leif and Lifis's combined inventory held more than 12 items, the Vulnerary and Steel Sword will be gone... and sometimes, the routine randomizing the item placement will have a brain fart and place empty chests. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • The soldier reinforcements in that chapter won't trigger if 13 Soldiers or more are already present on the map, so you don't get completely flooded in case of bad RNG rolls. They also will not trigger if you haven't entered the range of the patrolling soldiers, technically making ch4 the first stealth chapter. (Kaga did it first!)

    • In chapter 5, Galzus mercifully won't appear if the player never went to chapter 4x. He is also the only enemy unit (aside from enemies that have captured Eyvel or Nanna) that will leave the arena once the door is opened.

    • In chapter 8x, because Tanya is temporarily granted Eyvel's invincibility, she also cannot be poisoned for the first 15 turns.

    • In chapter 9, it's possible to trick all the soldiers and archers into going around the entire mountain range. If the way is blocked on the west side and isn't on the right side, they'll see it as the faster route.

    • A number of flying units including Dvorak, the Dracoknight in chapter 10, have a "Vulture AI." They will only charge the closest unit with less than 3 other player units in range of the target.

    • In chapter 11, Karin is able to fly to the left of the fort and attack one of Kempf's ballistae while staying out of range of both. However, since the map isn't symmetrical, that can't be done on the right side.

    • Enemies gain WEXP, although most of them only have a 20% chance of doing so. Most others gain it at a normal 100% rate... except Colho, the chapter 12 boss, who gains 200% WEXP with axes and 0% WEXP with everything else.

    • In chapter 12x, the condition for the Warp and Master Seal dancers to appear specifically requires that no HP from a Dancer unit reaches 0. So they can only be captured if they've been disarmed first.

    • I've seen (and propagated) the claim that Salem and Sara have a unique support bonus, that only appears if the two talk in chapter 16B. That's false, actually. They have it from the start.

    • Leif's Prince class is considered unpromoted when calculating EXP gained, which explains why he gains so much more after promotion.

    • In chapter 23, even if Saias survives and Ced's recruitment conditions aren't fulfilled, he won't join you if any of the civilians are captured or missing at the end of the map. In which case, neither of them joins.

    • In chapter 24, there's a lone Sorcerer who is able to use the Thief staff, despite not having one. If you reverse-steal it into his inventory, he'll start using it on you.

    • In that same chapter, one of the kids opens the door to the Kia staff. The kid is always a boy, and will only be randomly chosen on turn 5, so if you're going for full recruitment, the map is impossible to complete before that turn.

    Bonus:

    • There's one English FE5 mod that predates our Reverse Recruitments, Weapon Reversals and Overclocked. It's called The Aidyn Project, came out around 2007 and features a surprisingly ambitious range of edits. It's also a furry OC adventure (you love to see it! uwu).

Just like last year, the credit for these discoveries isn't solely mine, and is shared with Ultimage and Zane Avernathy, who have been digging deeper into the game than I have. If you want more FE5 morsels, Zane made a pretty cool thread with a bunch more FE5 tidbits.

Anyways, wishing you all a wonderful, wonderful day! and here's hoping it won't take 22 more years for them to localize this game, geez

Happy 22nd anniversary to Fire Emblem: Thracia 776!

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 04:35 AM PDT

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the release of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, also known as FE5, for the Super Famicom. The game was originally released on September 1st, 1999 for the Nintendo Power service (not to be confused with the magazine), a service in which consumers could buy a reusable Nintendo Power cartridge and take it to participating department stores to have new games written onto the cartridge. A physical cartridge version was later released on January 21st, 2000 which has the distinction of being the final official physical cartridge release on the Super Famicom.

Thracia 776 is an interquel of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It takes place during the second generation and features Leif, a character from Genealogy, in his quest to lead a rebellion against the Grannvalian Empire. While a few other characters also return from FE4, the majority of characters in the game are new. The gameplay style returned to a closer style to Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, but incorporated several elements from FE4 such as skills as well as introducing new elements like Rescue, Capture, and Constitution - some of which have since become series mainstays. In addition, Thracia 776 was the final game in the series directed by series creator Shouzou Kaga; Kaga left Nintendo for reasons unknown shortly after FE5 was released, changing the direction of the series permanently.

Thracia 776 was likely the worst selling game in the series, having only sold around 100,000 copies according to figures from a deposition in a later lawsuit. However, many who have played the game have praised both the story and the gameplay; what do you think?

The idea came up because I followed a Streamily feed with Brittany Cox (Ingrid) and the conversation of what Brittany's Pegasus would be came up. She used her voiced character from the anime Fena:Pirate Princess, Fena as the name. Are there others that are canon for the playable characters?

Does anyone have a list of names of the mounts for the Peg or Wyvern Riders?

The ones I know so far

How would you feel about an FE6 remaking using the original final boss concept?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 04:59 PM PDT

If you don't know, the original plan for Idunn was to have her be a legitimately powerful final boss to the point where you HAD to use the legendary weapons and the Binding Blade just to stand a chance against her. This was changed shortly before release because the Binding Blade was breakable, so it was possible to get soft locked at the very end of the game. As a result, they severely nerfed her into what is probably the weakest final boss of the series.

How would you feel if they brought this back for the remake, but gave the Binding Blade infinite uses? Maybe had more Hammerene staves or more uses for the legendary weapons as well to compensate?

    Dagdar: Ex-Bandit of Mount Violdrake

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:07 PM PDT

One of the most beloved characters of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 is Dagdar, the warrior who is recruited in the first chapter of the game. In gameplay, Dagdar is a very strong warrior. His high bases (bases so high that he can be deployed in the Endgame at base) are very useful at the beginning of Thracia, and his bases combined with his high axe rank allows him to continue to be useful throughout the game if the player re-recruits him. This utility as an "axe Jagen" makes him well-liked among gameplay enthusiasts. But Dagdar is also beloved as a character. He is a former bandit who has changed his ways and allied with Eyvel's Fiana Freeblades before the beginning of the game. While Dagdar doesn't have too much dialogue, he has enough to show a rounded character who plays on interesting dynamics in Thracia's worldbuilding. In this essay, I will show Dagdar's characterization throughout the game in the lens of his dialogue. As always, minor FE5 spoilers are ahead.

    ---

Dagdar is a former bandit who is a resident of Fiana. He joins on the third turn of Chapter 1 alongside Tanya, his daughter, and Marty, one of his subordinates. In the conversation that is triggered when the trio join, Dagdar voices why he is joining the fight: he feels that Eyvel cannot take on all of the soldiers attacking Fiana herself despite how legendary she may be. Marty's lamentation of "Here we go again" or a similar effect is telling. It shows that Dagdar has been eager like this to help (Eyvel) a lot - this will be revisited later.

In the same chapter, Dagdar has a conversation with Eyvel. Eyvel is surprised that Dagdar would personally come to help her fight, and she admits to him when he asks that Leif is in fact the heir to House Leonster. But Dagdar says that he suspected the entire time that this was the case. This shows that Dagdar is not just a "dumb" muscular bandit - he has skills to be at least somewhat politically adept.

    ---

Dagdar's next appearance is at the end of Chapter 3, when Leif is arrested by Raydrik. There, Dagdar resolves to return to his headquarters, Mount Violdrake, in order to regroup just as every character other than Eyvel did.

After that, he appears in either Chapter 8 or Chapter 8x. Chapter 8x is the sidequest chapter which is unlocked if the boss of Chapter 8, Rumaigh, is captured before Turn 15. 8x is set within Dagdar's house in the area of Mount Violdrake; here, Dagdar has to face off a mutiny led by Gomez, one of Dagdar's servants. Dagdar tries to get Tanya (who is also imprisoned) to escape while he fights off the brigands, but he is unable to as Gomez seeks to kill both of them. Gomez goes so far as to accuse Dagdar of being tricked by Eyvel while forcing everyone to starve.

This accusation makes little sense until the context behind why Dagdar and his men were/are bandits is revealed at the end of the chapter by August in a conversation with Leif. August explains to Leif that the soil of South Thracia is poor; that combined with North Thracia's sanctions has led to a perpetual state of food insecurity which has forced some Southern Thracians like Dagdar to resort to banditry in order to survive. But Dagdar has a different solution which is hinted at: he is trying to get the bandits (including himself) to revert to farming to grow food. We'll see later on how that works out, but at the moment it clearly has not been successful to the point where some (especially Gomez) have lost faith in him.

    ---

Dagdar speaks one final time in Chapter 24x. There, he expresses how he feels that he doesn't measure up to Eyvel. Eyvel however thanks him, and reciprocates the feeling - that she could not have done what she did with Fiana without the help of Dagdar. This makes Dagdar get tripped up, and Tanya notes that he is blushing. Perhaps this hints that something is going on after all with Eyvel? I do not think there is anything though beyond Dagdar possibly having a small amount of feelings for her.

Finally, in the epilogue Dagdar's ending results in him continuing on the task of trying to farm the land at Mount Violdrake. Surprisingly, the land eventually becomes fertile which vindicates Dagdar's position that it was possible for Thracians to make a living without resorting to banditry.

    ---

So what can be said about Dagdar? Dagdar in some senses is similar to the more well-known Bartre from the Elibe games. Dagdar, like Bartre, would do anything (including giving up his life) for his beloved daughter and he also is not afraid to use his brute force as we see in his attempt to take on the entirety of Gomez's rebellion by himself. However, Dagdar also adds in a couple more layers to this archetype. He, like many other Thracians, resorted to banditry to feed himself and his family due to Thracia's severe food insecurity. As August says to Leif in Chapter 8x, it was necessary for them because they did what was needed to survive. Yet, Dagdar (presumably with the support of Eyvel) thinks that this is not the only way; he has hope that everyone can set aside banditry and cultivate the land so they can feed themselves peacefully, without the need for crime. There certainly were growing pains on the way there, but in the end he succeeds. Dagdar's patience pays off as they successfully are able to make the land around Mount Violdrake fertile and become prosperous without needing to resort to crime. This is Dagdar: a former bandit who shows that banditry is not the only way to live while still supporting his family and friends in Tanya, Leif, and Eyvel.

Thank you for reading this essay on Dagdar, and happy 22nd anniversary to Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Hopefully this essay is a good summary of Dagdar's character. I'll see you the next time I release a post here.

Are there any FE games that don't have a difficulty that feels "right" to you?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:42 PM PDT

Title is hopefully self-explanatory, are there any fire emblem games where none of the difficulties feel quite right for you? Maybe they're all too easy, maybe they're all too hard, maybe easy is too easy and hard is too hard and there's nothing in between that you like.

For me the answer is definitely FE12. A lot of people really like it and I do kind of get why, but aside from my first blind ironman on Normal mode I've never been able to get very far in. Normal is way too easy for me now but I really don't like any of the Hard difficulties. Ambush spawns are a big reason why, but mostly the difficulty feels way too inconsistent - even on H1 the difficulty is massively frontloaded in the prologues, and I feel like there's a lot of "setpieces" that are designed for normal mode and nothing else. Stuff like Narvarre vs the thieves, Merric vs Arlen, etc. all kind of fall apart when the enemies they're meant to fight are way stronger than them.

Funnily enough I feel like I had the most fun on my abandoned H3 attempt. I only got as far as defeating Lang and then quit, but when everything is insanely hard it at least feels fair in a weird way. H1's difficulty just felt too all over the place for me.
