Tips for Newcomers to Vestaria Saga

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 11:28 AM PST

As you may or may not know, Vestaria Saga I has been released on Steam. This game was developed by the creator of the series, Shouzou Kaga, and originally released free in Japan in 2016. Now, three years later, DANGEN Entertainment has finished the English release of the game. As one of the beta testers, I have played through the game and beaten it. Here are some things that made my playthrough great, and a couple things I wish I knew.

    1. Play Blind:
This is the most important thing to follow. This is described by Kaga as a "puzzle-RPG"; the game is much when you figure out recruitments, events, and even just how to beat the maps yourself. The game gives you enough hints to figure out almost everything, and the rest will give you a nice feeling of accomplishment if you manage to figure it out on your own. As Chaz says, you only get one chance to play a game blind; don't waste it.

    2. Use (almost) everyone:
This game is more FE4 or FE2 in that you don't get a huge number of characters, but you can deploy almost all of them on most maps. Training up all but two or three of your units is heavily recommended, especially since it's not obvious at first. Stat caps are rather low in this game, so juggernauting doesn't really work. Maps that make you deploy everyone you've got aren't uncommon.

    3. Cycle your saves:
You're given 99 save slots for a reason. At the preparations, at the end of a map, and every 5 turns you're prompted to save; make sure you don't save over anything until you've filled up all your slots. Some of the maps can get very reset-heavy, so having backups to load is important.

    4. Check your talks:
This is simple - click on an empty space of a map to open up settings, go to Unit Roster, and look at the rightmost column. This will let you see who can talk to who, which is crucial in this game - it recruits characters, triggers events, gets items, and much else.

    5. Pick your difficulty carefully:
At the start of the game, you get two options - Orthodox and Clemency. Clemency just gives a little higher exp gains and boosts of +2 to Attack, Def, and Res to all characters. I have only played Clemency, because I typically avoid the hardest difficulty on blind playthroughs. I do think the added stats and exp saved me a lot of frustration. But overall, if you're playing completely blind but afraid of getting softlocked, i think Clemency would be a fine option to pick.

And that's all I got. I won't tell you too much else about how the game plays - people like u/Aggro_Incarnate and u/KrashBoomBang know much, much more than me about it. But hopefully these tips will make Vestaria Saga a bit smoother for you. It's a really great, unique game, so enjoy it.

Let's Play Vestaria Saga I: Prologue - The Fallen Kingdom

For some reason I don't like Hubert quite as much when he's not on my side...

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 08:06 AM PST

I was an Edelgard stan since the game got announced. First playthrough in Black Eagles. I was down with her whole political reform program. And Hubert was always a comforting, familiar presence along the way. He was always there to threaten encourage my students when their resolve wavered, and was always on hand to take care of adversaries with a well timed abduction surprise visit.

But now i'm doing the church route, and i'm beginning to see him from a different perspective. I'm not sure if it's the shiny black boots, the menacing laugh, the gaunt, pale, tom riddle esque appearance, the fact that he uses dark magic, or is always cutting a bloody path through my guys, but i'm starting to get the feeling that maybe, just maybe, he's... you know... evil?

How exactly would you fix Fates story?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 05:27 PM PST

I know that's Fates has been out for a few years and people would rather not talk about it but I thought it would be neat to read what others would have to say. As for my ideas, 1. Make the Dragon Form mean something. To quote a great series, "Why am I here?" "POWER UP!" "This won't matter will it?" "Probably not" Aside from the chapter it was introduced, a skill, a cutscene, and a paralouge, Corrins dragon form meant nothing to the story at all. Why make it this big deal when it won't be brought up by anyone ever again? Now I understand that giving the protagonist a overpowered ability would make the story worse as the game goes on but why not try something with involving the proficiency of the dragon stones? 2. Make Corrin more willing to fight for his/her side. In all 3 paths Corrins best reason for fighting is, "I did the right thing, I hope" Instead why not have Corrin fight to clear his/her name in Conquest as a potential traitor, Prove that he/she is Hoshidan royalty to the people and themselves in Birthright, and to stop a war that could get one of his/her family killed in Revelations?

That's about all I have for now, what other things would you try to fix?

P.s If it looks like I'm copying someone or stealing let me know i'll delete the post.
