    I'm playing awakening for the first time, and I was NOT ready for chapter 10.

    My first and only fire emblem game before this was birthright, and I didn't get why people criticised the story so much. I thought it was pretty good, and even sad at times. I still think that, but awakening's story had blown me away.

    I had emmeryn's death spoiled for me, so that didn't hit me as hard as it should have. What did affect me was everyone's reactions. Seeing Chrom so angry, and seeing Robin left clueless as her plan fell apart were both really emotional. I was pissed at King Gangrel and I wanted him dead. I was not prepared for the game to throw me into a level where I was forced to see that many of the soldiers I had killed up to that point we're just as innocent as I was. Neither of us really wanted to kill eachother, but we had to. I felt so bad when I had killed a few of them and the spear guy said he agreed with our cause, but would still die for his general.

    And the setting and the music really drive the whole thing home. The bittersweet piano mixed with the fact that we were fighting in a depressing, dark, muddy landscape really drove in just how sad all the characters must be feeling. And of course when I made it to the boss, after killing dozens of his soldiers to make it there, he just had to say "please spare my men...". God, this chapter was amazing. The only time birthright came close was chapter 25. But this time it was near the start of the game, so I am excited to see just how good it gets later.
