Three Houses is the most unNintendolike Nintendo game I’ve ever played

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I know Fire Emblem is generally more serious than most of Nintendo's IP, but this game is amazing and I attribute that partly to the devs being able to craft a dark and mature storyline, brimming with complex characters that you simply don't get in other series. I hope the game's success encourages Nintendo to invest in other mature, or maturer games of this nature. Not that I have it in for their family friendly output, and Three Houses has its fair share of goofiness, just that I think there's loads of potential in them diversifying their portfolio in this manner.

Deghinsea and Rhea: Immortal Lives Lead to Immortal Mistakes

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:08 AM PDT

I found myself finding a few parallels between Deghinsea and Rhea, and before I knew it, I noticed both of them offer different perspectives on the same basic idea: an immortal who has a significant say in the flow of history on their continent making a critical mistake and watching the consequences unfold. While there are a few more token comparisons to be made, these are the main ones:

The Departure of the Goddess: Both Deghinsea and Rhea had to deal with the departure of their respective goddesses.

Deghinsea's goddess, Ashera, was split in two as a result of the goddess's own imperfection, and as a result of the action, both halves agreed to enter a thousand year sleep in order to reflect on the happenings, and in order for "humanity" (in Tellius, this probably isn't the correct word, but I will be treating it as if it were for simplicity) to prove that they were capable of peace- the constant warring of the laguz and beorc being the catalyst for an apocalypse at the goddess's hand.

Rhea's goddess, Sothis, was slain in her sleep following her successful quelling of humanity's war, with her remains fashioned into a weapon which would be used to begin the war anew. Sothis's existence was not gone forever, however.

The Lie*: Both Deghinsea and Rhea told a lie in order for their respective utopian desires to be achieved.

Deghinsea, whose goal was the peaceful coexistence of the beorc and laguz, was justifiably panicked when the first attempt at a beorc-laguz union proved disastrous- the laguz parent was stripped of his powers and the child was indistinguishable from a beorc. In order to prevent what could only be a brutal backlash from the laguz, he helped cover up the birth of the child, claimed the father died in an accident, and declared a taboo on beorc-laguz marriages.

Rhea, whose goal was the resurrection of Sothis and the return of the peace which reigned while she lived, did not want to see the death of the descendants of the Ten Elites and the persecution of their Crests, the blood of the dragons which she also possessed, and claimed Crests were a blessing of the goddess.

The Backlash: Believing both lies, the peoples of Tellius and Fodlan cast aside their morals in service to the lie.

The Branded, once the evidence of their existence began to surface, were shunned by both beorc and laguz societies, treated as dirt, and executed in honour killings.

The Crests, coveted for the nobility and the power they bestowed, were selectively bred for, with the lengths a family would go to maintain the existence of the Crest in their bloodline getting more and more desperate.

Penance: Both Deghinsea and Rhea saw this unfold, and chose not to admit the truth.

Deghinsea believed it would be too late to reveal the truth, and sealed his country to keep to the letter of his vow to the goddess and protect humanity from his own mistake. He lost two of his three children as a result of both maintaining the lie and this draconian policy.

Rhea believed revealing the truth would lead to open unrest and chaos, and offered only token resistance while she continued her experiments to revive Sothis, believing her success in this endeavour to serve as a golden ending, solving all the problems left in her wake.

Failure: Both Deghinsea and Rhea saw their hopes for their utopias collapse.

With the goddess awakened, Deghinsea lost all faith in humanity, and joined the goddess, fighting to maintain the judgement cast upon the world, knowing that even he failed to uphold the spirit of the vow he had made.

With the facade of peace shattered by the Agarthans' return and Edelgard's open war, Rhea either languished in prison to reflect on her failures or learned her thousand year goal was all for naught and lashed out, depending on the choice made by her goddess's avatar.

Both dragons show a certain hopelessness of the immortal, having made a critical error that they witnessed spiral out of control over a period of centuries before their eyes. And both dragons died when the results of this lie became large enough to destroy even them (Rhea can be saved, but considering what she'd have to live with, would you want to?).

Questions about canon details getting moderated?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:42 PM PDT

I feel like I've been seeing some posts lately that ask questions about canon pairings or relationships, but then I feel like they disappear before I'm able to interact with them.

Granted, I'm of the opinion that in general there's no reason to establish a canon thing unless another canon thing is based on it, so I could see the conversations being deleted since it's just going to be the same arguments over and over again... but I guess I'm looking for the sanity check of "yeah, these posts are getting nuked from orbit."

Fire Emblem series survey - 2020

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:17 AM PDT

With it being nearly a year after the release of Three Houses, and given how Three Houses' strengths and flaws have been more thoroughly scrutinised, I've become curious about how the community's perceptions of each game in the series have changed following Three Houses' honeymoon period, and whether the results of the last survey that I conducted three months after Three Houses' release (https://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/dszkw4) still hold true:

This survey is around 10 minutes long, and asks questions about various aspects of the series, such as what FE games you've played, your favourite and least favourite game, your favourite lord etc.

It'll be up for a few days, or until responses stop coming in.

Please consider filling it out so that I can get as many responses as possible.

    Link: https://forms.gle/N2kHr9DwYMRHVdRT9

    Thanks for your time!

Note: I didn't make this clear last time, but for questions that ask you to rate a particular game from 1 to 10, please only fill these questions in if you have played that game before. Thanks!

Edit: Because someone asked, yes, you can still complete the survey so long as you've played a Fire Emblem game - even if you've only played one game in the series. In particular, I'd definitely like to see the perspectives from both newcomers and veterans in the series!
