    Duty versus Personal Desire: Archanea

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 01:03 PM PDT

Probably the most consistent criticism across Fire Emblem narratives I've seen (besides raaar stop putting a dragon boss at the end!) is that the main protagonists are too same-y. Blue haired sword lord's home is invaded and he leads a rag tag group of blah blah blah. I take great exception to this criticism, as while there are a lot of unifying themes in our beloved rapier wielders, the context of their worlds offer different philosophies in their identities and motivations. These characters are all leaders of their respective realms, but how do they lead? There's a wide scale here, between acting for their own personal happiness and acting for the good of their halidom, some characters range from self sacrificing to a haunting degree to downright selfish. All of these characters must find their own way, and the answer for each is different depending on the game. I love each and every lord (yes, even you know who) for their journeys and what they learn, and I'd like to go through each and every one of them.

Just to make a few things clear, though! I'll be going by country from release date order, but I totally reserve the right to pool from every game these characters are in. So if I'm talking about Marth, I might talk about Mystery, as well as New Mystery as I believe the experiences are wholly different.

Because this is about the royal lords, I won't be talking about any of the avatars in this series except Corrin. Robin isn't a leader even if they are Plegian royalty, but a tactician and largely supporting character until the end of the game, and Kris is just straight up a supporting character. I went back on fourth of Byleth, but while Byleth is a god or whatever their primary motivation is to provide education.

Also no Ike or Miciah. Partially because I don't know much at all about Tellius and partially because Ike isn't even royalty. If you still want to analyze Miciah, I implore you to do so in the comments or something because I can guarantee you're more qualified than I am.

Without further ado, let's begin with the hero king Marth!

    War of Shadows:

Oh, man, Marth is like, the perfect lord, and exemplifies the ideal of a ruler.

After his escape from Altea as a fourteen year old boy, Marth's sole purpose at this point is to take back his homeland. He wants to achieve this so badly, obviously out of duty as he is essentially a fourteen year old king at this point, but to rescue his mother and sister, the latter of whom sacrificed her freedom to save him. He makes a steely, fiery promise to Jagen that he will defeat Gra and reclaim his homeland, not surely but assuredly. Marth hates feeling powerless and knows that at this moment of time he can't accomplish anything, but he embraces the agony this puts him through to bide his time. Like most lords, Marth is fiery, idealistic, and fierce in dedication, but he isn't reckless. He'll win, he knows this, but he needs to bide his time. Which he does, patiently, over the next two years.

This patience serves him well, well enough to pay attention to the state of the world and act accordingly, a lesson that takes some other lords much longer to learn. He learns about the context behind some of Gra's actions, and his hatred for them softens. Marth at fourteen is someone driven by pride, loss, and personal ambition, but also one that recognizes he has much to learn, which he does!

When he finally succeeds in reclaiming his homeland, and finds his mother is dead and his sister is gone, well...I think we all know the quote, right?

Nyna: "Marth! Any word? Have you found your family? Your sister?"

Marth: "…My sister was taken by Gharnef. She is no longer here… And my…my mother is… She is dead. Slain…by that Dolunian dragon…"

    Nyna: "….! Marth, I am truly sorry…"

Marth: "I thought there would be something…some part of my old life I would be coming back to. I fought so hard…"

    Nyna: "You fought wonderfully, Marth."

    Malledus: "…Sire, might I have a moment?"

Marth: "All the moments you want, Malledus. What is it?"

Malledus: "Your people have gathered outside the castle. They are overjoyed to be free again, sire, and would like very much to see their prince."

Marth: "All right, then. I'll go at once."

Nyna: "Marth…perhaps you should let that wait, just until you are able to share their joy with them. We could send someone in your stead-"

Marth: "No, that would not do. Today is a momentous day for my kingdom and my people. I must celebrate with them now, not later. Anything else would be a disservice to those who died to save Altea. I am a prince before I am a son or a brother. Come, Malledus. Let us go greet my people."

Marth is pretty fucking perfect as a ruler, maintaining his sense of duty alongside an idealistic heart: He offers both Camus and Michaelis amnesty, for example, but doesn't falter when they deny it.

Still, it is a little tragic that he's given so much for his kingdom and will push down emotions for the good of it. This is something that Nyna, someone equally as selfless and sacrificing, picks up on, as seen in the above quote. He's younger than her, and she clearly doesn't want Marth to be the same person she is.

When Marth finally slays Medeus, Caeda confesses. Marth is initially reluctant. Given the positive relationship between their respective nations, Marth really should marry Nyna. Caeda, however, is a bit different from Marth, in that she's less...innocent? A bit mischievous and spoiled, definitely calculated, and willing to advocate herself and love for Marth. In her mind, her own personal feelings towards Marth are more important to her than "the greater good" and she's willing to fight for it.

Nyna has lost her love and doesn't want Marth to go through the same thing, so she gently pushes him to make the decision that will make him happy and marry Caeda, while she marries Hardin instead. Marth accepts and makes the only decision that results in his personal happiness in the game.

And this one decision serves as the catalyst to another fucking war.

    War of Heroes:

This poor fucking guy does not catch a break.

He has to abandon his homeland again for the greater good because the evil dragon he went through a fucking monolithic journey to stop is back again! Not only that, but a personal friend is now the villain, because Nyna married someone who she didn't love back.

I'm not sure what the message is here, because in Nyna marrying someone for the good Archena, and Marth marrying someone out of love, both result in the outcome of Hardin's corruption and Medeus's return. I don't think Marth gets the message either, and in New Mystery it is obvious that how emotionally taxing being thrown into another war is.

Kris gets a lot of shit, and I'm not here to tell you they don't deserve it, but thank god this game was a bit more focused on emotional support, because Marth sure as hell needed it. It's clear this time around the dude just needs a hug. He's a phenomenal leader that once again wins, but this path is paved with constant tragedy and he's miserable and just let this guy and have an ounce of happiness. LET HIM MARRY CAEDA ALREADY DEAR LORD!

It is truly amazing to me that Marth manages to slay the same apocalyptic dragon twice, and stay as emotionally stable as he does after being forced to kill his friend, witness other friends die, and just fight battle after constant battle. Seriously this guy does not get enough credit, and I'm not convinced that Medeus isn't going to show up a third time.

Let Marth take a fucking nap. Please. I'm honestly so happy that Nyna eventually just said "fuck it, I am not going to put myself through this emotional torture"

Marth, you amazing hero king, I don't know how you do it. Definitely one of the best lords from a competency and emotional stability to perspective; Marth is pretty hard to top as a leader.

Next time: We go to Valentia to discuss Alm and Celica! Both are very different characters from Marth, so I'm really excited to discuss them!

Talk with me about your favourite Thracia character!

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 06:54 PM PDT

Howdy! It occurred to me that the vast majority of my favourite Thracia characters are from Genealogy of the Holy War. Double the games, double the chance for character development. Makes sense. And in games without supports you take every chance you get. That said, I feel like I've missed out on some potentially cool characters. Outside of Kane, I don't absolutely adore any of the Thracia original cast, though I don't remember heavily disliking anyone either. I'd like that to change! So, why do you love your favourite Thracia character?
