If Manfroy had just killed Julia, Loptuous would've been fucked

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 01:10 PM PDT

Yeah, you read my title right. Manfroy leaving Julia alive was actually big brain move.

To give some context, people really love Genealogy of the Holy War's story, but one scene of dialogue between the two villains Julius and Manfroy gets some criticism for being a pretty dumb plot hole near the end of the game.

Manfroy up to this point has been an A class schemer, basically manipulating all of Grannvale to his will of bringing back his dark god, and it's all gone without a hitch. However, now that he has Julia, the only character with a real chance of defeating Loptuous (besides Seliph maybe), he suggests leaving her alive because he has some "ideas for her." Julius is basically like, okay dude, but be careful she can totally murder me if given the chance and Manfroy is like whatever. Then Manfroy dies and; spoiler alert, Julia is able to kill Julius and Loptuous (unless it's Seliph).

It may seem like Manfroy may be hitting the cactus juice, but I'd like to purport that simply murdering Julia isn't the easy, one and done solution people think it is. And that's because death isn't quite as consequential.

Guys, remember the Valkyrie staff? It's the staff that can bring playable units back to life! Guess who's a playable unit, Julia! And as long as you weren't an idiot and had Claud marry Tailtiu, you get the one user of it in Jugdral at your disposal.

I'm sure your thinking, Shuckluck you dumb fuck, stop trying to explain gameplay mechanics as plot points, this isn't Three Houses! To that I say well fuck you right back because the Valkyrie staff is one of the 12 Crusader Weapons and therefore part of the l o r e. That makes it important so shhhhh.

See, if Manfroy had murdered Julia, all that would happen is Carpe Diem or whatever his name could just wave the magic stick and Julia would be back at home castle, alive and well. I know it teleports you there because I killed Arden accidentally on purpose in prologue and Claud probably didn't even know his name. How did Arden run all the way to Silesse branded as a traitor, HUH? (Actually lmao I'd pay someone to write that story.)

You could say, well, what if the Valkyrie Staff's already been used? I mean, you could fix it? Julia's literally the most powerful person in the game. Literally there is no one more important than her. I'm sure everyone could pitch together some money or whatever.

Okay other counterargument: Quan and Ethlyn can't be brought back to life, and they were playable characters who left the party. To that I say...dammit, that's a good point. I got nothing for that.

The thing is, we almost do get an explanation for how the Valkyrie staff works like, in the lore. Claud's explaining to Tailtiu, and mentions it has to do with the person's level of Quintessence, before Tailtiu interrupts and we don't get to find out how it works. I'm like 90% sure only people with a high amount of Quintessence can come back. But, if that's the case, dude it's Julia, who, again, is the most powerful character in the game and uses Naga powers. If she doesn't have enough Quintessence, no one can. If Arden can, she totally can.

Julia can be brought back thanks to the transitive property, boom.

P.S. The Valkyrie staff actually screws over Manfroy pretty hard. He could try to possess Coirpre or whoever to use it in case Loptuous dies, but if Loptuous dies, he dies, and once he dies, his possessed victims break free like Julia did. Okay, wait. He should've killed Coirpre, THEN killed Julia. So I guess he's still an idiot.

This post accomplished nothing. Bye, guys.
