Which weapon do you think suits Wyvern Riders/Dracoknights more?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 05:07 PM PDT

The Wyvern Rider/Dracoknight is a staple class of Fire Emblem all the way since the first game. Combining the mobility of a flier with the offensive and defensive capabilities of Paladins, they tend to be near the top echelon of units in their respective games, with Radiant Dawn and Three Houses showing them arguably at their most dominant.

One little thing however is how the preferred weapon of the class has changed over time. In their initial outings dragon riders tended to prefer lances like every other mounted class, with swords serving as a sidearm in later installments like the GBA games. However, starting with the Tellius games this changed: while they still primarily used lances in Path of Radiance, their promotion to Wyvern Lord gave them axes, while in Radiant Dawn they were axe users from the get go. The Archanea remakes would largely mimic their original incarnations, but would give Dracoknights access to axes and even give Minerva the Hauteclere as an axe counterpart to the original Regalia trio of Mercurius, Gradivus, and Parthia.

Since then Wyvern Riders have been primarily axe users from Awakening through Fates and into Three Houses (Valentia, oddly enough, is the one continent in the series without native dragon riders, despite Wyvern Valley being in Valm in Awakening; I guess 2000 years can change a lot of things).

So what IS the Wyvern line's true iconic weapon? The lance or the axe?
